Backdated to last Friday. Mondo shows up for a geology study session but clearly has little interest in actually studying. If there's a secondary mutation for nearly boring extremely cheerful mutants to death, Crystal probably has it.

Mondo whistled tunelessly as he headed up to Medusa's room, bookbag slung over one shoulder. Today was another bitterly cold day but he was in a good mood anyway. Breakfast was yummy oatmeal with fruit in it, and his morning classes were done without too much pain. When he got to her outside door, he opened the door and let himself in without knocking.

Crystal had been expecting Mondo, and so the door was indeed unlocked, but a knock would have been appreciated. Lockjaw knew that Mondo was approaching even before he came close to the door and jumped up in excitement, barking. The moment Mondo entered the room, the bulldog puppy began running in circles around him. "Hello, Mondo," Crystal greeted her visitor.

Mondo kneeled down and scritched Lockjaw's head vigorously. "Hey, puppy!" he said with enthusiasm. "How you doin', boy?" He then reached into his pocket and slipped Lockjaw a doggy treat. "Have you been _good_?"

"He has not tried to eat any shoes today," Crystal told Mondo. "I believe that he is finally breaking this habit. Medusa has had to work with him a lot." Medusa, please be careful...

Mondo wiggled his bare toes and then straightened up with only a slight wince as he knee protested. "Hey, Crystal!" he said with his usual Big Smile. "How are things going with you today?"

How were things? Oh, things were fine. Things were great. "Everything is as fine as can be expected," Crystal said. "How are you today?"

"I'm doing great!" he said enthusiastically, then flopped on one of her chairs, causing it to creak ominously. Mondo was not by any stretch of the imagination svelte. He did not, however, make any move towards opening his bookbag and getting ready to study.

"Would you like something to eat or drink?" Crystal inquired, playing the part of a polite hostess.

Mondo thought about it for a moment. "I'd like something to drink, please!" he asked. Besides, drinks were occasionally a good way to refine his power by seeing if he could feel any metallic salts or compounds in his drinks.

The taste of water could vary from city to city, and it also varied from country to country. Early on during her stay at the mansion, Crystal had discovered that the water here was not quite what she was used to and had had pure, filtered water from Attilan brought here. On the other hand, the people here might not like water from home. "Would you like water from here or water from Attilan?" she asked Mondo.

"Whatever's the most convenient." he said agreeably, then finally hooked his bookbag and unzipped it. "I'm not fussy."

Crystal knew that Mondo was from Samoa, not New York, but she was sure that he had already had water from here. She wasn't quite sure what he would think of the water from her home and decided to pass on that option. Crystal placed a coaster on the table, then set a glass of water on it. She picked up Lockjaw and sat down in a chair next to Mondo.

Mondo took the glass of water and drank a third of it thirstily. "Thanks!" he said with a smile for Crystal. "So how's Chapter 12 coming along for you?" he asked.

"It is coming along fine," Crystal said. Lockjaw sniffed at Mondo's book-bag and wriggled in Crystal's arms, attempting to reach it.

Mondo nodded and then reached into his bookbag to pull out a very dull-looking rock. He rolled it in his hands for a moment, almost seeming to lose himself in it for a moment. "That's good." he said, returning his attention to the here-and-now. "I like the geology class, but man, sometimes when it's really nice out and there's a sunbeam coming in through the window I just can't be bothered to concentrate on what's going on in the class, you know?"

Well, yes and no. Crystal concentrated in all of her classes, especially Geology. Of course she liked being outside, liked being able to feel the outside air, liked being able to fly... but there was a time and a place for that, and classroom time was not the proper time for that. So yes, she understood, but no, no matter what she made sure to concentrate in all of her classes. Even cooking; she had to or she might burn something.

"I enjoy spending a lot of time outside," Crystal told Mondo. "I do my best to pay attention in class. I take my studies very seriously."

Mondo yawned but nodded at the same time. "Of course they're important, but there are days when there are more important things, ya know?" he told her. "There's no rush."

"I am here to learn," Crystal said. This statement had been her oft-repeated mantra since her arrival at Xavier's, although she wasn't quite sure that she had said it to another student before. "We have classes at a set time; they do not repeat themselves. While I am certain that I would not have a problem catching up on my own, I find that it is best to pay attention in class itself and listen to what the teachers and other students have to say." Again, that is one of the reasons that I am here. I watch. I listen. I observe.

Mondo yawned again and then looked over to Crystal. "You want to go outside? It's really cold out but the sun is shining and it's much better than being cooped up in _here_!"

"The cold does not bother me," Crystal told Mondo, "and I do enjoy spending time outdoors, so yes, I would like to go outside. We can take Lockjaw with us; I am sure that he will enjoy the fresh air."

Mondo grinned at that most capital idea. "Sure!" he said, then picked himself back up and gathered his things. "Too nice of a day to be stuck inside, even if it is too cold." he said with a not-entirely-mock shiver. "Come on! Maybe we'll find a cool rock to talk to."

Crystal stood up, still holding Lockjaw. "Perhaps you should get a coat from your room if you are afraid that you will be too cold outside." Recalling that Mondo had never taken out his textbook, she asked, "Should I bring my Geology book or are we going to use yours?"

Mondo just shrugged to that. "We can use yours if you want." he said permissively. It really didn't matter to him. "And I think I'll go get a sweater." he said, heading out of her suite to return to his own room to grab something warm that wouldn't itch him to death.

Crystal frowned slightly, wondering if something was wrong with Mondo. He did not seem very interested in having a study session. Shrugging lightly, she put Lockjaw on the ground and picked up her textbook. Lockjaw followed her out of the room, and Crystal locked the door before leaving to catch up with Mondo.

Mondo grabbed his sweater, shrugged into it, then turned to face the politely-patient Crystal. "Ya know what? I hear there's a beach downstairs, with sand and sun and WARM! Maybe we should go have like a picnic or something, yeah?" he blurted.

The school had a beach downstairs? Well, if they had a jet hidden under the basketball court, why shouldn't they have an indoor beach? "That sounds like a good idea, Mondo," Crystal told him. It wasn't really outdoors, but she hadn't been to a beach for far too long. "When would you like to go? If it is to be a picnic, we will need to make sure that we have the proper picnic food."

"Don't worry about it!" Mondo said, much cheered by this prospect. "Let's set it up for this coming weekend, OK?" he asked with one of his Big Grins. "It'll be fun!"

"This weekend is fine," Crystal said, although she was more than slightly worried about not having to worry about the food. "I will be here this weekend." This was going to be the second-to-last weekend she had to stay on campus. Crystal looked down as Lockjaw began to whine. "I believe that Lockjaw would like to go outside, and we were heading outside anyways, were we not?"

"Leeeeeeeeet's go!" he said cheerfully, sounding for a moment like a Samoan Fat Albert.

Neither Crystal nor Lockjaw was quite sure what to think about Mondo's drawn-out word. Crystal, however, was glad to see that Mondo appeared to be back to his usual, cheerful self. "Lockjaw, come," she said as they walked down the hall.
