Ororo and Remy arrive at their first stop and find out what exactly they're up against. The discovery is not at all reassuring.
Remy stepped into the motel room they had rented, and walked immediately over to the side table. Ororo came in behind him, puzzled to see him flicking through the bible that he had pulled from the drawer. During the drive down, she'd noticed the tiny pin mic built into the wrist piece, allowing Arcade to listen to them. With some time, they could deactivate it, but that hadn't been an option yet. At her urging, they'd doubleparked their stolen car in front of a fire station, ensuring a speedy towing and notice to the owner back in New York.
Remy smiled as he pulled out an envelope that had been slipped into a cutout hollow in the pages. "Not much of a room, chere." He said, walking over to the table and putting it down next to the larger envelope of information that Arcade had given them in New York.
"With any luck, we will not be here long enough to notice," Ororo remarked, doing up every lock on the door before crossing the room to the table. It had taken a good chunk of their funds just to secure the room, leaving them with virtually nothing to go on for the next leg of the trip. "And no stealing from the minibar," she added a bit distractedly, leaning in to pluck up the envelope and open it up.
Remy leaned over to open the door of the tiny fridge in the room, looking at the empty icecube tray that was the only thing inside. "No fear of dat, 'Ro."
He put a finger to his lips and opened up the envelope. Arlen had come through. There were three pages of tightly written text, and a slim stack of crisp twenties. The three hundred wasn't much, but it would sustain them until they had time to figure out the next step.
Arcade's folder had contained a picture and the name of the LOST BOY in Savannah, Rory Browne, and his last known location. He was normally found in the warren of streets around Bonaventure and Pennsylvania. It was an area now rundown, not enjoying the economic upswing of the rest of the city. Arlen's note contained what he could dig up about the other teams after Browne.
Ororo came to stand behind Remy, standing on her toes in order to read over his shoulder. Obviously the first step was clear, locating Browne, but they needed to know what they were up against even before that. It seemed like the first team consisted of thugs recruited from the Friends of Humanity, who certainly had a vested interest in seeing a mutant like Browne in their clutches. She shuddered a little just to think of what would happen to the already unfortunate man should the Friends of Humanity get to him first.
"Best look for Browne in the morning." Remy said for the mic, planning to go out and secure the tools that Ororo had needed to disable their constant audio surveillance. His finger traced down the names and the sponsors, deepening his scowl.
el-Giber had gotten involved, as had the Friends of Humanity and the Hand, some kind of Asian criminal gang. Remy recognized both of the entries from the Assassin's Guild, but the final two made him pause.
Reavers.
By this point Ororo had wandered away to look out the window, pushing aside the floral-print curtain to survey the empty gravel parking lot. It was hard not to see people lurking in every shadow, just waiting for them to make a move before springing. She gave a sigh, wrapping her arms around herself and glancing down at the flashing bracelet on her wrist.
Remy walked over and silently pointed to the entry on the paper. "We should get something to eat. Tomorrow's going to be a very long day. Savannah's not exactly a tiny city, and Arcade's rough location is going to mean a lot of walking." They needed to disable those mics very soon, Remy glowered.
Reavers. Ororo furrowed her brow, eyes quickly flicking over the remaining information on the page. "Very well. There was a diner we passed up the street. Let us go there, for the sake of convenience." She glanced up at Remy, her _expression worried.
He shared her concern. Without their powers, the Reavers were more than a match for them. "A healthy dinner of grease to fortify us for tomorrow." He pointed at the pin mic again, and she nodded. They'd make a quick detour on the way to the diner and get the tools needed to at least allow them to talk freely. "You like, what, de chicken fried steak?"
"How did you know?" she asked, keeping her tone light. "Come, let us go, I am suddenly starving."
"Crime always works up an appetite, chere." He nodded and motioned for the door.
"Then I have a feeling I will be very hungry by the end of this," Ororo replied, starting to unlock first the deadbolt, then the chain across the door. "Very hungry indeed."
