At the Hilo airport, Vida tracks down Lorna and makes her claim on Alex clear. Lorna isn't impressed.
Her parents had booked an earlier flight and Lorna agreed to see them off. Her dad had a meeting that evening and her mom was supposed to play hostess at some charity event for the country club. Lorna'd wished them a fond goodbye at the gate before she headed back to Mailani's. After yesterday, she was toying with the idea of changing her flight. Catching something a bit earlier and just heading home instead of trying to make the slightly awkward aftermath to the ill-thought-out kiss less awkward. They were friends or trying to be. But trying from a distance might be smarter. She just wished she could bring her puppy home with her. Lili was better off in Hawaii where she had Crush and plenty of attention; however, that didn't make Lorna miss her any less.
Before Lorna could get to the security gate, however, there was a tall, tan girl waiting for her, white-rimmed sunglasses perched neatly atop of carefully styled hair. Vida smacked her gum and leaned lazily against the barricade, a quick call to Mailani with the excuse that she needed to give Lorna something from Alex and she'd gotten all the flight info. She hadn't been waiting long, which was just as well. Any further inconvenience and Vida would have been in an even worse mood.
Lorna slowed as she recognised Alex's girlfriend and a not so small piece inside her reared up and hissed at the girl. A larger section still smothered the hissing part, drowning it in guilt. It wasn't Vida's fault after all and Vida wasn't the one who had kissed Alex yesterday despite the fact that he was dating someone. Lorna plastered a polite smile on her face, deciding that trying to fake genuine warmth wouldn't be believed. "Hey Vida," she said casually, "Here to meet a flight?"
"Not really," Vida inspected her nails, not even bothering to look at Lorna while the other girl spoke to her. "I was here to meet a certain green-haired bitch who I caught planting one on her ex yesterday. A certain ex who happens to be my current boyfriend." When Vida looked up, her eyes were pure poison.
Well...hell. Lorna's guilt was rather smug in its increased smothering of the newly hissing part of her. Mine she wanted to say but...not. Because he wasn't and Vida was right. "Look, it wasn't like that. Nothing happened. It was just a moment and it passed and he picked you." He had, right? Of course he had. Because it would have been stupid for either of them to choose anything different.
"So, what? He tripped, fell and landed on your lips? I'm not stupid, he talked about you non-stop for months. 'Oh, boo-hoo, Lorna broke my heart, I'll never love the same way again,' I finally was able to go a month without hearing about you and then you show up and it's like you never left!" Vida threw her hands up in the air.
Lorna's guilt raised a metaphorical eyebrow at that and stepped aside. Oh, hell no. No one got to talk to her like that. "You don't have any idea what it was like before I left. What Alex and I were. You think that because you're with him now that you're the same to him as I was? Think again, duckie. We went through things that you will never understand," Lorna hissed back, stalking closer. "He's with you. That means a lot. I'm not trying to steal him back. If I wanted him back, I wouldn't have to try to steal him. That kiss meant nothing."
"Stay away from my boyfriend, you stupid twat," Vida snarled. "Don't ever come back, you're not wanted here. If you do..." Vida trailed off, an odd, sort of challenging look in her eyes.
"If I do and I want him back, you'll have a hell of a fight on your hands trying to stop me. Don't you dare try to tell me where I can go. These aren't your islands and you don't get to decide where I go or what I do. You want him, he's yours right now. I'm not trying to get in your way. If you don't treat him well, I'll make you pay and pay and pay." Lorna flashed her a bright smile. "Excuse, I have to change my flight."
That got a delighted bark of laughter out of Vida. "Try, just try." Her expression was slightly wild. She stepped in front of Lorna. "Make no mistake, darling, you're playing with fire here. And I'll make you eat those words. Promise." She pushed past Lorna, banging her roughly on the shoulder as she did. "Oh? And you might want to eat something, you look anorexic. It's gross."
"Bitch." A part of her wanted to go back and take Alex away from Vida, just to prove that she could. But he deserved better than just being a pawn in a larger game.
Lorna went to change her flight. There wasn't anything left for her here.
Vida stepped out into the balmy air outside of the airport, retrieving her tiny pink cellphone from her purse. She tapped in a few numbers and then held it to her ear. "Hey, Mom? I'm ready now. Let's get this started."
