Marie introduces Garrison to the Danger Room before his date with Angie. There is more banter than training and you get to find out what happened on Marie's birthday in Canada.

"Here we are," Marie said as she paused in front of a nondescript door in hall, keying in her passcode and turning slightly for the retinal scan. "Voila!" she exclaimed with a flourish. "Welcome to the Danger Room," she continued as the automatic door swooshed open. "Where you can bring your worst fears to life and beat the living the crap out of them. Remind me to show you the video of me getting shot with a rocket launcher. That's one of my favorites."

"You do realise that you're still completely insane, right? Like certifiable and everything." Garrison muttered, following Marie in with no small sense of dread. One of the things that invulnerability seemed to do was turn normally balanced people into adrenalin junkies that would make Evel Kineval say 'whoa, hang on and think about that for a second'.

He stepped into the centre of the large, plain metal room and looked around. "Wow. This is really a big open empty box. Wait, didn't this used to be the Costco on Exeter right by the 401? I think I recognize it."

Marie merely looked over her shoulder and stuck her tongue out at Garrison in response to the insane comment. It wasn't like she could really deny it. "Figured Ah'd start you off with the easy stuff," she said as she pulled up a program and told the computer to run it. "Basically capture the flag." As she spoke, an image of a forest rose up and the sounds of the bots rustling through the leaves could be heard.

Kane turned in a slow circle and gave a low whistle. "Damn. Now I actually have to be impressed." It was like a science fiction show, the holograms shimmering before they solidified into a realistic forest. He touched one of the trees, and was surprised that it resisted against him, instead of his hand going right through. Some kind of forcefield or something?

"Wait, capture the what now? What are we supposed to--" Garrison turned around, looking every direction. "Uh, Marie? Marie?"

Reaching out from behind a tree, Marie tapped his shoulder, a wide grin splitting her face as he jumped. "Don't tell me you never played this game as a kid. There's a 'flag' out there," she said gesturing to the trees. "And we've got to find it without letting the bots get us. Think you can handle it?"

"You guys pulled your training manual from the 1962 Scout Leader's Activity Guide? This does not make me any more confident." He muttered, but already was looking towards the forest. "So tell me about these bots. We talking friendly 'tag you're out' bots, or more of an ED-209 configuration with the heavy caliber machine guys and the oy?"

"Well, Ah could always start the rocket launcher program instead," she teased. "An' what fun would tagging bots be?" Pushing off the ground, Marie floated to the tops of the trees to scan the area. "There's something shimmery that way," she said pointing towards the northeast corner of the forest.

"That would be the 1,827 Orcs with big bright swords or something." Kane muttered as he set off. The simulation was effective, with the ground rising and falling under his feet, and the trees feeling remarkably substantial. There was obviously a basic format; the bark had no real texture, and his hands moved through the tiny blades of grass, but it was impressive all the same.

He ducked behind a fallen tree as a bot drifted by, scanning left and right. It had a fairly stable pattern which meant it was no trick to evade. But obviously, this was just the first wave. He fumbled on the comlink, unable to see Marie through the tree cover. "I've dodged their outer perimetre, I guess. What do you see?"

"There's a clump of about five or six a little ways ahead. We could try and go around them, but Ah can't tell if they have more sweeps out to either side." She shrugged even though he couldn't see her. "We could split up, try and get on either side of them and take them out quietly. Neither of us is really built for distance assault though, which limits our options." She could always try just flying the pair over the bots, but she was hesitant to suggest it after what the DR had done the last time she tried to evade it's tricks that way.

"I suppose calling for backup and waiting for them in the nearest Tim Horton's isn't a possibility, eh?" There was no response. "Fine. How about we try and make a gap. Draw them one way or another, and sneak either of us up the middle? We both don't need to have the flag."

"Sounds like as good a plan as any," Marie replied. "You draw the bots to the right, Ah'll do the sneakin'." She took off before he could argue, a wide grin splitting her face. It wouldn't be a true Danger Room experience if he didn't get to engage the bots.

"Great. The invulnerable one gets to be sneaky, while I get my ass shot off." Kane muttered. He slowly looped around to the right, catching sight of the bots as they hovered in a patrol pattern. Unfortunately, the forest didn't seem to extend to rocks to throw, so he was going to have to do it the hard way.

As the first bot went past his tree, Garrison flicked open his baton and stepped out, swinging as he did. The bot went down in a squeal of electronic noise, the carapice badly dented from the blow. He stepped over it and lashed out at a second one. This bot was already moving in a defensive pattern, but wasn't able to counter Kane's speed. His strike sheared off the top componant stack on the housing.

The rest of the bots had started forming up, and he could hear more heading his way. Now for the part that as a cop he liked best; running away. "Alright, uh... Rogue. You've got a clear shot while these things take my head off and wear it like a toque."

As she saw the drones move in the direction of Kane's distraction, she slipped through the forest, quickly covering as much ground as possible as she searched for the flag. Finally she saw a scrap of something fluttering in the wind and changed her course to go towards it. A whirring noise was her only warning before a bot swung it's arm at her head. Quickly sidestepping the blow, she grabbed the drone's arm and spun around, tossing it high above the trees. Reaching out to grasp the simulated cloth, she activated her comm. "Ah'm about to grab it. How're ya coming with those bots?"

"YEEE-HAW!" Marie looked around to see Garrison holding tight to one of the large man-sized bots, holding an arm over the sensors and being flung left and right as the thing whizzed past, trying to shake him off. A score of the smaller bots followed the pair, like a school of deadly fish waiting to pounce. Kane had levered the bot towards the treecover and it burst through the canopy with him dangling behind it.

Marie's hand dropped to her side (without the flag) as she laughed at the site in front of her eyes. "Only you," she crowed. "Would start riding a bot. Can't wait to see you do that in the field." Watching the bot buck with Garrison on it's back and all the little drones bouncing up to try and reach him, Marie debated whether she wanted to grab the flag and end the fun. "Why do Ah always do the right thing?" she muttered to herself as she reached up to yank the flag. With the objective reached, the simulation ended. The room quickly dropped the forest image and all the bots shut down exactly where they were as they processed the new command to return to wherever it was they lived when they weren't being used.

"Ahhh.... crap." Garrison said resignedly as the bot suddenly came to a halt. And he did not.

"Ow." He said finally, after bouncing off the wall and the floor twice. He looked up at where Marie was standing over him, laughing. "You did that on purpose."

"Yup," Marie said, her grin growing broader at the dirty look he shot her. "What? You expected me to deny it? Ah figure it's the least Ah owe you for that night you left me stranded. Ah know that girl was hot, but damn. It was my birthday."

"I knew it! Jealousy! You found out about my date tonight, and are trying to put me in the medlab to stop me." Garrison got up, rubbing his butt where he'd bounced. "And for the record, I left you because you nearly poured your martini in my ear trying to 'whisper' about the hot guy at the end of the bar that was checking you out. I didn't want to get in the way of a little birthday sumtin' sumtin'." Kane paused. "And yes, she was hot."

"If Ah wanted you in the medlab, you'd be in the medlab," Marie said, her tone keeping the comment from even remotely resembling a threat. "And who's the lucky lady? Or is this just some random ass?" she asked, pointedly ignoring his comments about her own behavior. It had been her birthday after all.

"Marie-Ange. She's one of the ones at Wisdom's outfit. Red head, French, long legs." Garrison grinned as he adjusted his outfit. "See, you waited too long and one of the other one's snapped me up. I bet you're disappointed."

Clutching her chest, Marie collapsed to the floor. "How will Ah ever go on now that you belong to another? My world is shattered." Marie barely got the words out before she was consumed with laughter. Looking up at Garrison from where she lay on the floor, she smiled and continued teasing him. "She's a precog you know. Means Ah don't gotta warn her about your tricks, she'll see them coming."

Kane kicked her in the ass where she lay. "If she's a precog, she's likely got it memorized and is buying supplies for it." He reached down and grabbed her hand. "Come on, Beullah. I'm going to be late. Time to hit the showers."

Garrison pulled her to her feet. "I'm still totally willing to soap your back for you, though."

"Oof," Marie let out as he pulled her up. Taking a step towards the door, she glanced over her shoulder at Garrison. "How does a girl turn down an offer like that?" she said batting her eyes. "Oh that's right. No," she continued, the expression on her face showing that she was having way too much fun.

"See, your loss." Garrison laughed, smacking her on the ass as he walked back. "Besides, when you end up being caught with a dirty back, don't come crying to me, eh?"
