Two volunteers hang out and wait until they are needed. Laurie Eats Ice cream and Julio tries to prove he is a gentleman.

Laurie was eating an ice cream, this would appear strange considering they were currently surrounded by snow and waiting for their orders in order to out and rescue people, small kittens...whales and the like. Did the zoo here have a whale? She wasn't sure. Perhaps she'd need to ask Marie. But anyway, she was hungry, and one of the local ice cream places was giving volunteers free food and they'd had chocolate chip cookie dough. Who could resist chocolate chip cookie dough? Not her, that was for sure.

"Hey Julio." she said around the icecream, coming out slightly garbled.

Julio grinned at Laurie. "Hey, yourself," he said, forcing himself to stop pulling off his gloves and putting them back on for the eleventy-thousanth time. This was his first outing as a volunteer, having signed up a couple of days after the weekend coma. Hawaii would have been a very bad idea, what with the exploding volcano and everything. He was glad that Kansas did not contain any major geologic disruptions, otherwise that could have added a whole new dimension of wacky fun.

He pointed to Laurie's ice cream. "Are you not cold?"

"Yes." Laurie replied shortly, ceasing her eating for a second to reply. "However, never let it be said that I let climate stop my enjoyment of cookie dough icecream. If you want some, they're handing it out over there."

"No, I believe I am good," Julio said, nodding. "I actually prefer mint." He cracked his knuckles and then shoved his hands in his pockets in order to stop fidgeting. "You were in Hawaii yes? What is it like?"

Ahh, a newbie, Laurie had forgotten that Julio hadn't been with RedX on the whole Volcanic Island thing. He'd be nervous and unsure what he was meant to be doing, just like she'd been to begin with. "Hectic, scary and people behaving like you'd expect in a natural disaster. In other words, complete idiots. But! That's where we come in, to help protect them and the surrounding geography from their panic."

Laurie smiled in what she hoped was a reassuring manner and not a smile covered in half devoured ice cream. "You'll be fine."

"Right," Julio said, "At least I hope so. No breaking things unless they tell me to." He gave Laurie a wry grin. It was nice to be helping instead of being the cause. "Do you know what you are doing? They have assigned me to snowclearing." Which was going to be tedious as all hell, but it was practice. And sort of vital.

"Crowd control, I think. Or, showing people where they should be going, rather then being where they are." Laurie replied, grinning back and taking another bite of her ice cream before it melted. "Marie's coming with me, since she's good at the 'telling people you shouldn't be trying to take those shiny things' sort of stuff. I already did the search and rescue with Kyle earlier on the way in. It's absolutely insane out there right now. Never seen so many people freaking out over snow."

She paused to take a breathe, theorizing that breathing was a good and natural thing and should be done way more often then she normally did, especially when talking to people. Otherwise she might start freaking them out with her lung control.

"Snowclearing is good though, something you and Angel can do together?" Laurie finished on a teasing note.

He was thinking just how cute Laurie looked with her ice cream when she brought up Angel. That's right, dumbass, your girlfriend. He flushed slightly.

"Ah, no, she is with Ms. Munroe. That is really going to be interesting," he grinned at the thought. The headmistress and the exuberant Angel working together was something he would pay money to see. "I do not know who I am being assigned with, someone adult, probably. They might have wanted to keep Angel and me separate, PDA is not very professional."

Laurie snickered, and then coughed as she snorted ice-cream up her nose. "Ow, ow, ice cream headache the bad way!"

Julio laughed. "You see? there is a downside to eating ice cream in the middle of a blizzard."

"Only when attacked by random funny from boys." Laurie replied, getting control of herself. "You should try to eat something before you go out, though. Cold makes the body burn way more calories then it normally does and using our powers will probably make us burn even more."

Julio grinned sheepishly and removed a wrapped sandwich from his pocket. "For later, I ate a little bit ago. They also have como se... M.R.E's, for later, because we need the hot food. I am not so much looking forward to those." He made a face.

"Oh ew. I had some of those M.R.E's during the last RedX mission. Corned Beef flavour has got to be the worst thing on this green earth. Chicken fajita flavour is passable, however. Do you know when they're shipping you out? I've gotta wait for Marie, since she's getting our maps and the like. It's going to be really hard to see out there."

"I am not looking forward to them mangling fajitas. There is also something called a strawberry flavored milk drink, and it makes me afraid." He shrugged at her other question. "I have no idea, wherever they are sending Group 6. I am just waiting for them to call me."

"Well, we could play scrabble while you wait. I brought the little magnetic travel game type. It's good for the waits between going out there." Laurie replied, fishing around in the backpack she'd brought with her. She'd learnt that a good backpack was always welcome for carrying odds and ends you might need.

"Yes, I would like to very much," Julio said, welcoming the chance to take his mind off the boredom. RedX seemed to be full of "Hurry up and wait" and anything to break up the wait was welcome. "Do Spanish words count?"

"Only if you have a Spanish to English dictionary on you." Laurie replied with a grin, sitting down on one of the chairs nearby and placing the scrabble board on the table. "Otherwise, how would I know if you were cheating or not?"

"I am a man of honor," he said, placing his hand over his heart. He settled into the chair and accepted the pieces from Laurie.

"Suuure you are." Laurie replied, grinning as she looked down at her own pieces. "That's why I saw you putting that pepper in Kyle's drink the other day."

"If he could not smell it, then he deserved it. I am keeping him on his toes." Julio said with a nod.

"Then I guess I'm just going to have to keep you on your toes then with my leet ninja scrabble skills." Laurie replied, putting down her word and chuckling at the look on Julio's face.
