Despite his best efforts at avoidance, Angelo finds out about the Preservers.

He'd done a pretty good job of avoiding watching or listening to anything that resembled news, for the last five days. But all luck had to run out sometime, and for Angelo, that time had just come. Walking past the bedrooms was easy, since the TVs were barely audible, and certainly not intelligible, with the doors closed. Until, that was, Laura's door opened just in time for him to hear the Preservers video being played on CNN for the hundredth time. He froze, caught between bolting one way and... bolting the other.

Unfortunately, the dilemma just meant he got to hear the rest of the Preserver's speech loud and clear.

The door opened the rest of the way and Laura froze in the doorway, blinking at him. "Angelo?" she asked hesitantly. She had gotten off fairly lightly, all things considered, only a few lacerations from flying glass and no broken bones.

His head turned almost sharply - though not angrily - towards her, as he wished desperately he was not hearing this. "...Laura. Hi. I was just..." He gestured vaguely down the corridor.

Laura stared at him, then looked back over her shoulder into her room. "Oh.." She came out into the hall, closing the door and cutting of the sound from the television. "Had you... I mean, had you not see that yet?"

He shook his head, glad to be able to put his full attention on her now. "No, I... I didn't... I haven't been watchin' TV."

"... why?" She looked honestly bewildered. "Don't you... I mean, you have to know why this happened, right?"

"Well, I do now", he said, almost wryly. "But... I couldn't." That was all she was getting, unless she asked more questions, since he really barely knew her.

She gave him a long, perplexed look, and for a moment, she didn't look at all like the shy young woman who was only a few years older than him. Her eyes, suddenly, seemed old and tired. "Sticking your fingers in your ears and going 'lalala' to the world doesn't work, Angelo," she said, not sounding shy at all. Sounding like what she was, a former Mistra operative who'd seen the absolute worst of human nature. "And the world doesn't wait on you to be ready to deal with it."

For his part, he was just an unhappy young man who might have grown up a lot, and been through a lot, but still had just wanted to pretend shutting out the world would work for a while. "I always knew it wasn't gonna work forever", he said almost as tiredly. "Have to go back to America an' the job sometime. But for a while... anyway. I know now."
