Yvette meets Dani in the kitchen, and Dani discovers that answering questions leads to... more questions.

Dani cored another apple in the kitchen, preparing to make some apple pies. She probably had something better to be doing, like homework or office work, but making apple pies was more appealing. Especially since she had not baked in a long time. The rest could wait. She was also in love with the apple coring machine. Just impale the apple, set the blade and turn the crank! Voila! Instantly cored, peeled and sliced apple! It made making homemade pie so much easier.

There was a muffled thump and a scrape at the back door, then the sound of something being set down before the door itself opened, revealing Yvette. She bent to pick up the tray of containers and dishes she'd had to put down - they were clean, thanks to Sooraya, but they were collecting an awful lot of the mansion's dinnerware, so she'd offered to take them back to the kitchen. At the sight of Dani, however, she paused, ducking her head shyly. The mansion was big enough that she was still meeting people, and new people were scary. Not as Scary as they had been, but still difficult for her to relax in front of. However, manners were manners, and she recognised the girl from her journal pictures - Marie's roommate and the other TA. "Um, h-hello," she said softly.

"Hey Yvette," Dani replied, setting the last of the apples in the bowl. She hadn't met some of the newer residents officially, but she knew them through the journals and through the front office, "Need help with that?" Dani strode over, helping pick the dishes and things up. She practically towered over the tiny girl, making her feel like some giant amazon.

Yvette jumped a little at the sudden movement, making the dishes rattle, but stood her ground. "T-thank you," she said as Dani took the tray. "You are being Miss Dani, yes? Miss Marie's friend?"

"Yes, but you can just call me Dani," technically she was a Ms. but that wasn't important. She didn't like people caling her by any formal title, unless she was on the phone with a company that was annoying her. "I'm the other RA for the students. How are you liking Xavier's?"

It was strange, how the teachers and other staff kept wanting her to call them just by their names. Very... American. "I am being liking it very much," she replied politely. "People are not being frightened of me here and I am not being hurting the people." Her nervous gaze took in Dani's labour, the pile of uncored apples next to the machine, and her expression brightened. "Please, what are you being making?"

Dani filled in for the beginning cooking class, so she didn't really feel she was a teacher. Not like say, Mr. Summers or Mr. Dayspring. Plus, she was still in school herself. "Well, that is why Xavier's was started. So people like us have a place to go, ain't it? I'm making some apple pies, if you want to help."

"May I be taking some to the Elpis people when they are being ready?" asked Yvette, already moving towards the counter. Apple pie was possibly one of the best things in the world, as far as she was concerned. Better than raw cookie dough, even. "They are being the working hard, and it is being the treat for them, yes?"

"Certainly, you can," Dani agreed, she was making at least four pies in this batch, so there was plenty, "And you can help chop the apples into pieces too," she passed the bowl of apples over while she began rolling out the crusts. She was cheating and using pre-made dough, but they would still be homemade.

Yvette giggled a little at that - Kyle had taken to calling her Ginzu Girl (as well as Apple Ninja), and after seeing a commercial for the knives on television, she couldn't argue with it. And apparently her usefulness in the kitchen was becoming known. She pulled over the short stool she had claimed as hers and climbed up so she could reach the counter, and the apples. "Is Miss..." She corrected herself. "Is Dani being the student here too? When you are being small, like me?" she asked, tugging off one glove and reaching for an apple, careful to stay out of elbow-bumping reach of the older girl.

Laughing, Dani tried to remember how old she was when she was as small as Yvette. Maybe when she was 7 or 8? "I don't remember being as small you are, Apple Ninja," she said with a smile as she fit the pie crusts into the pans, "I came here when was 17 and already this tall. I was a senior at the time though, in school. " At 5'10" she was nearly a foot taller.

"Seventeen? You are being having the trouble with your powers when you are being that old?" Yvette sounded surprised, pausing in the action of peeling an apple with her claws. Surprised and a little worried. Then she realised she was also sounding rude. "I am sorry, that is being not polite."

Dani didn't consider any question rude, how would Yvette learn if she did not ask? "Mr. Dayspring still has problems with his powers and he is in his 40's," she pointed out, although he tended towards over extending himself more than control issues, "I... a lot was happening in my life at the time and I was pregnant so my powers were all wonky. I've really only gotten them under control recently."

Yvette blinked, a rapid shuttering of those glowing eyes. "Please, what is being your power that you are being the...wonky?" she asked, curious. "And you are having the baby? He is also to be living here at the school?"

The only problem with questions, was that once they started they didn't stop. Not looking at Yvette and concetrating very hard on making sure her pie crusts were just right, Dani tried to figure out how to reply, "I'm an empath," she began slowly, "I see peoples fears. Their nightmares. Sometimes, I can broadcast them, but only to the person who has that fear. And no, the baby is not here. The baby has....other parents. Not me," because she was not a fit mother. Over a year later and she still knew it was true no matter how far she had come with her powers and everything else. Looking back at Yvette she forced a smile, "Well, how are you coming with those apples?"

Always sensitive to the moods of others, Yvette looked up at Dani for one long moment, and then back at the peeled apple in her hand. "Good," she replied, and closed her fingers around it, slicing the fruit into several perfect pieces.
