Garrison and Marie: Checking in
Mar. 22nd, 2007 11:04 amGarrison goes to check on Marie, despite the professor's post. Turns out that sometimes a little telepathy goes a long way to getting things out in the open.
Marie rolled over in bed, hands going to massage her temples. The professor had helped smooth out some of her mind and had still aided her shielding while she was sleeping but with a quiet word he was gone from her mind. Cautiously she worked on patching the chinks in her shields. Now that she knew how to spot the cracks, it was easier to fix them, but she was still struggling to find them all and keep them all closed at the same time. She looked up at the knock on her door, a look of surprise on her face. "It's open," she called out, expecting to see Ororo coming to check on her.
"Evil ninjas was the best excuse you and Shiro could come up with to sneak in a free vacation to the city of Very Brotherly Love? Seriously, I could have given you the whole Ferris Bueller list of ways to fake sickness if you wanted." Kane said, walking into her room. He had a covered plate in one hand and a bottle of aspirin in the other. He crossed over and sat down on the bed beside her, passing over the plate. With a flourish, he pulled off the cover and handed her a fork.
"It's not the poutine from the Irish Embassy, but the fries are fresh cut, and I was able to threaten the curds out of that organic dairy place down on the Centre. I even heated up the gravy myself."
"Ah never wanna go back to San Francisco," Marie said, accepting the fork once she got over her initial surprise at the appearance of the Canadian. "It's evil."
Taking a bite of the poutine, she closed her eyes as she chewed and swallowed. The first time she'd had poutine was when Garrison had shoved some in her face during her first month in Canada. "'s good," she mumbled before taking another bite, scooting closer to Garrison to get better access to the plate.
"Absolutely. The Professor said that you shouldn't be disturbed, but I decided to ignore that completely. Because, I said to myself, Marie has had issues on a secret mission. That means she can either sit alone, or what she really needs is a plate of hot cheese, grease and fat, a couple of drinks, and my live DVD of the Tragically Hip at the ACC that she nearly lost her top at." Kane held up the mentioned DVD with a grin.
"No, you're the one that nearly lost your top if Ah recall correctly," she said and then paused. "If you're gonna hang out for a bit, there's something you should know." Sticking her fork into one of the fries, she moved it around on the plate, eyes focused on the path it was making through the gravy. "Ah'm kinda, um, telepathic right now. And Ah'm not so good at it yet."
"You're telepathic? As in you know what I'm thinking?" Garrison paused and shook his head. "Well, I'm boned. I'd like to point out that the dirty thoughts involving the slip and slide and the chocolate sauce aren't entirely my fault." He joked, and suddenly froze. Oh hell, he thought, she's going to know that that isn't so much a joke as I like to pretend.
Well, he hadn't fled in the opposite direction, which was a good sign. She'd known he wasn't particularly squicky about telepathy, but she'd worried it would be different from her since she was still working on her control. A stray few words played around the edges of her mind and she furrowed her brow trying to figure out what 'know...joke...pretend' was supposed to mean.
"Not everything that crosses through...just a few words here and there and some of mine go out too," Marie said. As the words left her mouth, she blushed and realized what it might mean if she couldn't rein her thoughts in. Like he might realize that of all the people who could've showed up at her door, he was one of the ones she'd wanted to see the most. Especially after she'd seen him bleeding in front of her.
"Of course you wanted to see me the most. I'm pretty and bring good music and bad food." Garrison said, and paused. "Wait, did you say that or think that? This is getting confusing." Kane was already starting to get a little confused. Marie was right. Thoughts were leaking around him, and he knew intimately what she had gone through in Canada with Twoyoungman, and what it took for her to find her feet. "Hey it doesn't matter, Marie. There's nothing that I'm trying to hide from you that's going to send me running, eh."
Her jaw dropped slightly and she desperately tried to clamp down on her thoughts. "Ah....Ah think Ah thought it, but now Ah'm thinking about thinking and Ah'm getting all confused." She reached out to squeeze his hand. "Thanks. Ah'm really trying not to, but Ah can't seem to quite help it. Nate or Jean'll be coming by later to help me." She took another bite then set the fork down on the plate. "Wait...but there is something you are trying to hide from me?"
"No. No, no, no... yes. A little, yeah." Garrison sighed. "Look, I just-- we've been friends for a while and it's cool. And that you're cool with that and that's enough but," If she was telepathic, she didn't even really need to be to figure this out. "Look, since coming here, there's been things, you know. Things that are, you know, different. Obviously different, but more different than the normal different things. That make sense?"
"Yes...no. Kinda?" she answered. She moved the plate to the nightstand so she could turn to face Garrison without worrying about gravy spilling across her bed. "You...like me?" she said, her brow furrowing slightly. That can't be right. Can it?
"Well, I obviously like you. I mean, we've known each other and I..." Kane sighed. This really wasn't working. Not that he was ever the great orator, but he was descending very quickly into inarticulate mess. Well, screw it. The thought rang as clear as a bell between them, as Garrison leaned in and kissed her on the lips.
The contact was short, only a few seconds. He knew of her powers and her issues, but... well, it would be a lie if he said he hadn't come up with a dozen ways around it. With Marie, especially with her powers, a physical response meant more.
Marie's eyes widened as his lips brushed hers. "Oh," she said as he pulled away. "That was nice."
