Now that the telepathy has faded, Marie and Garrison finally go out on their first date.

"For the last time, I'm not telling you where we're going." Garrison said, leaning slightly so that he could slip in the new Arcade Fire cd and turn the volume down. Marie had been asking where they where going for the last forty-five minutes, as he drove deeper into the rural areas of upstate New York. It was their first official date, and he'd shown up on time, with a rose and the grin of a man with a devious plan.

"Aw," she pouted. "Maybe a hint?" She'd given up on guessing within the first fifteen minutes, once it became apparent Garrison wasn't going to let anything slip. "Fine, fine, Ah give up," she said at the look on his face. Casting a sly look in his direction, she grinned. "What about telling me how much longer until we get there? That wouldn't really be a hint..."

"How did you make it through school being this impatient?" Kane pulled the car off of the highway and into a long dirt road. It was only a minute before he pulled the car over, and switched off the engine. "We're here." He said as he got out of the car. Around them were unmarked trailers and big rigs. Despite the mid-evening time, a fair number of people were moving around, obviously setting something up.

"Um," she said before mentally kicking herself for suddenly having a bunch of single syllable grunts and words in her vocabulary. "So we're here...but where...or what is it?" Marie looked curiously as a pair of people walked by carrying a huge coil of utility wire. The view of whatever they were headed towards was blocked by the trailers set up in the area. "Are they filming a movie out here or something?"

"Yes. I got you a role as an extra on the new 'Co-Ed Slasher' film. Your costume is in the glove compartment. I hope you like the colour of the thong." Kane said, as he walked over from car to the front. As they walked into the field, it became immediately obvious that it was some sort of fair being setup. The games trailers for the small midway were already in a line, beside a couple of tent and a large wall-less roofed area for livestock. Many of the people were building up stands and setting up the tables. "This is actually going to be the Upstate New York Spring Celebration fair in about two, three days."

"So then aren't we a little early?" she asked, reaching out to take his hand and squeeze it to show she was kidding, though she was still pretty confused. Marie continued to look around, taking in the sights of the fair, though most of them were in some process of assembly. The only thing that looked finished was the Ferris wheel, now in plain sight as they made their way across the fairgrounds.

"Yes, I brought you to an unopened fair without a good reason. Also, I am a gay robot." Kane said dryly, approaching the ride. He gave a wave, and a man detached himself from the coffee truck and wandered over. "Hey Dave."

"Garrison. We'll be ready in about five, alright?"

"Sure. We'll go get settled in." Kane said, and led the bewildered Marie up the ramp to one of the capolas on the wheels. "The company that sets up all these rides had to do an FBI check a couple of months ago doing a fair on government property in Virginia. I checked their schedule and came out to talk to him."

He helped her into a car and slid in beside her. "He was nice enough to offer to let us ride on it during the setup test."

Marie just stared at him for a good minute, so surprised at the thought he'd put into their date. She'd half expected him to just take her out for dinner and a movie, the kind of stuff they'd done together as friends. "This is just about the sweetest thing anyone's ever done for me," she said softly, laying a gloved hand on top of the bar that'd been lowered over their laps. "Y'know, Ah use'd to go to these fairs all the time when Ah was a little girl. They were always so happy - filled with smiling families and couples, games and food, music and contests..." she trailed off, a smile on her face.

"It's not the Ex by any stretch, but it was available." Kane said, easing himself back beside her. "Besides, don't thank me yet. This is the setup test. If this thing jumps the bracket, we're going to end up rolling all the way to Connecticut." His grin was infectious as the whole car shuddered and began to move.

His words earned a laugh. "Well, Ah guess it's a good thing Ah'm invulnerable," Marie said, her eyes twinkling as the car continued it's upward motion. "And if Ah end up havin' to save your sorry behind, Ah'll never let ya live it down." It felt good to slip into their usual banter and Marie began relaxing - she hadn't even realized she was tense until then.

"Yeah, I kind of figured that would be the case." The wheel finally reached the apex of its cycle, leaving them looking out over the fields and forests that surrounded the fairground. The evening was lengthening, a line of purple and red mixing at the edges of the horizon. "You know, I think I like this better. I hate having to pay off kids to get to the front of the line."

Marie took in a deep breath, savoring the view and the company she was getting to share it with. "Plus, when you pay off the kids, they come back later for more. Sometimes it's just nice to have some quiet. The mansion doesn't allow for much of that." And neither did her head, but compared to the week of telepathy, things had been relatively silent.

"Which is why my plan is to soundproof my room, install a dozen locks, and duct tape the entire student population into the boiler room." Kane grinned. "I'm pretty sure that I can convince the Professor to support me on this one."

"He might even buy the duct tape, depending on the week," Marie joked. "Or maybe all the kids wake up with the strange desire to file into the boiler room and sit without making a peep." She paused and sighed dramatically. "The things Ah shoulda done while Ah was a telepath."

"Instead of spending the whole time trying to sneak into my naughty dreams. Don't think I didn't notice." The ferris wheel continued its slow cycle, as they brushed past the landing area and started back up into the sky. "You know, for a girl that can fly, you have a surprising love of rides."

"What sneaking? You're the one who went 'Well, Ah'm going to bed now. You know where to find me. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge'," she teased. "As for the rides...well Ah couldn't explain it to ya if Ah tried." Marie shrugged, her grin softening as she glanced over at the Canadian.

"I can. You're an adrenalin-junkie who grew up in an area where base jumping was thought to be a tool of the devil." Garrison slipped an arm around her shoulders and leaned back. "Fortunately, I'm willing to overlook the deficiencies of your taste and culture because I happen to like you." Because he obviously couldn't be serious about anything.

"Glad my flaws aren't a drawback. 'cuz you realize you're gonna have to catch a greased pig to truly win my affection right?" Marie leaned slightly into his arm, one gloved hand cautiously reaching out for his other hand, lacing her fingers through his. "But Ah know Ah'll have to headbutt a moose or something to win yours, so it'll all balance out. 'sgood Ah'm so hardheaded."

"Speaking of greased pig..." Garrison said mysteriously, as their ride slowed.

The roadside restaurant had all the faux down home cooking clichés that corporate stores worked so hard to emulate. The front was wood, with a big simple white sign. Inside, there were only a dozen tables, dark stained wood and uncushioned chairs; covered in a sheet of brown butcher paper. There were memento and sports items and old toys on the walls, and a couple of guys dressed like truckers at the bar, having a few drinks and listening to the game on the radio with the owner. The only difference was that it actually was authentic, having been in the same location since before the second world war.

Garrison took a sip of his iced tea, wincing slightly at the fact that it was actual cold tea. The menu, a single sheet of paper, was lying in front of him, grease spots on the edges. "According to the locals, this is the best barbeque place in New York."

Marie was busy squeezing lemon into her tea from the little plate of wedges she'd had the waiter bring. "That's like saying some place is the best hiphop club in Tennessee," she said, a smile on her face. Taking a sip of her tea, the smile turned into a grin. "Well at least they know how to make sweet tea mostly right. Needs a little more sugar."

"You know, being a barbeque snob is hardly polite. I'm sure they provide the same... love to their pigs that you get in the South. I'm just hoping they remember to take the wedding veil off before they serve it." Kane passed the menu over to the waitress as she came by, and ordered the ribs.

Passing her menu over as well, Marie ordered the same. "Now now, you gotta talk nicely 'bout my cousins. Just 'cuz Sadie Mae's got that awful nose is no reason to call her a pig," she said with a wink. "And good BBQ is about a lot more than the meat. It's all about the sauce."

"You know, I say the same thing about my dates."
