Once the dust settles in New York, Angelo and Amanda meet up as planned for her birthday. Dinosaurs be damned.
Amanda sat on the steps of the brownstone, dabbing ruefully at the scratches on her arm from those little feathered toothy... critters that had attacked them in the foyer. You wouldn't have thought something so small would be so nasty. Still, they'd been taken care of. "Happy birthday to me, all right," she muttered to herself, but without any real venom. It was, simply, just another day in what was a very weird life. Albeit, slightly weirder than normal. It didn't help Mark and Sofia were still missing - now the distraction provided by the dinosaurs was gone, the worry bubbled up again.
The plan all along had been for Angelo to come by after work, so they could go out for dinner, to try and keep her mind off things. He was sticking to that, even if his suit was rumpled, dusty, and covered in aurochs hair, and he was still wearing the cowboy hat as he approached the brownstone.
"Nice hat," Amanda said with a small smile as he arrived at the steps. "Looks like your day was as exciting as mine."
"Yeah, us an' the rest of the city", he said with a wry smile in return, dropping wearily onto the steps next to her. "The hat was a present from a street vendor. 'Cause he saw me ridin' a bull as tall as me. Had to go up to stop it tramplin' me."
She brushed at some of the dust and hair on his suit jacket. "'Up', huh? The whole 'ride 'em cowboy' bit and all?" Then she tugged the hat down slightly over his eyes. "Not bad for a city boy."
He couldn't help laughing, if only at the ridiculousness of the whole situation. "I couldn't let go of its horns enough to get down 'til we got to Central Park. Then it was too busy eatin' to notice me."
She chuckled along with him, although she was relieved to see he was all right. "I spent most of the time whizzing around down town New York in a Mini. With Wanda driving." She rolled her eyes a little. "We saved Monet's butt when she pulled one of her blank spells in mid-air. She's still as much of a pain in the arse as she always was."
"Yeah? What'd you come up against?" He'd seen some of what was running around out there, while he made his way across town from the park.
"Enough of these things that I need a bloody guidebook to name 'em all?" she replied wryly. "Tho' I'm not sure what's worse - the great big bloody thing that thought I was a pre-dinner snack, or the little bastards that jumped us out here." The scratches weren't bad, but they stung. And she'd liked this shirt, too.
He looked at her arms, frowning slightly. "Those need any more cleanin', or anythin'? You never know what might've been on their claws."
"Got the antiseptic happening right here," she said, waving the cloth at him. "'S nothing." She glanced around at the street, still bearing the signs of dinosaur madness, in the form of mangled cars, piles of dinosaur doo-doo, large footprints in the pavement. "Hell of a mess."
"Yeah, it'll take some clearin' up, that's for sure", he agreed, surveying the scene. "You got any idea what they're doin' with the dinos an' other things that survived?" He'd seen more than a few dead ones on the walk.
"Quarantine, the blokes who came to collect the last of our pest problem said. Then maybe a zoo or something, if they can work out a way of making sure this doesn't happen again." She nudged his shoulder with hers. "I s'pose we'll have to call off dinner then? On account of dinosaur invasion?"
Angelo considered this seriously. "We're both here, we can both walk... I say we find a restaurant that's still open an' we do it anyway."
She smiled, and leaned over to kiss his cheek. "What's a little dinosaur invasion to us, huh?" she said. "You know, I don't think they got as far as Chinatown..."
"Chinese sounds good", he said with a grin. "An' hell, it's your birthday."
"Only get one of those a year," she agreed, climbing to her feet. She brushed herself down , although given the state of her clothes, it was more of an automatic gesture than anything. Sure she could go change, but given the state of the city, she doubted there'd be any dress requirements being enforced. "Tho' there better not be anything like this for your 21st," she continued, holding out her hand to help him up.
"Amen", he agreed fervently, accepting the hand up... then using it to pull her in for a kiss. "Happy birthday."
She smiled at him rather goofily. "See, that's the sort of birthday I was hoping for when I woke up this morning," she said, reaching up to loop one arm around his neck. "Thanks, love."
"Any time."
