OOC: Posted early due to absence all day and most of the night and my co-logger is in Australia with the time zone. Apologies.

Slice of life - Laurie is back early from the bus run and Amanda runs into her waiting on the steps of the brownstone. Chatter ensues.

A gust of wind blew hair across Laurie's face as she rang the doorbell of the brownstone, and she reached up to brush it away from her eyes, juggling a set of bags that held the shopping she'd done this trip.

She hoped her mother liked the sweater she'd brought for her, and she'd picked up some new clothing as well as various other odds and ends. It had been weird shopping alone but sort of nice as well. She wondered if any of the others had made it back yet, they'd said something about catching a movie.

Luckily for Laurie, Amanda was already on her way down, mindful of the time and with the van keys jingling in her hand. She grinned as she saw the younger girl waiting on the doorstep. "Hey, Laurie," she said. "You're back early. All done with the shopping?"

"Yup! I painted the town plaid, or the 'non legal age for anything interesting' version of it anyway." Laurie replied with an answering grin. "I found a place that has this enormous New Age section that has some really cool incense sticks and candles. Perfect for studying type mood setting. I resisted buying the 'Spells in a box' to torture you with though."

"Thank you so much," Amanda said dryly. "Those hippie shops are worse than Harry Potter, I swear..." She glanced at her watch, and then at Laurie. "We've got another ten minutes yet before I have to start the round up - walk me to the corner shop? I need some fa--er, smokes."

"You know that stuff causes cancer, right?" Laurie replied, grinning at the slip. She'd had fun the past couple of weekends asking Amanda about the differences in words between American English and British English.

Amanda rolled her eyes a little. "So does living, practically," she countered, good-naturedly - the kids tended to rib her about the smoking, but she wasn't about to give up any time soon. Especially not now she had a boyfriend with the same evil habit. "I figure with everything else I do, it'll be something else that gets me long before the lung cancer does. But that's getting into Depressing Land and Mark had a talk with me about my cheerful little stories, so lets try somewhere other than my evil nicotine habit?"

"It's your body." Laurie replied, grinning impishly.

She paused for a second to remove her hair from her eyes again, before catching up with Amanda again.

"And your stories aren't that bad. I like hearing about what went on at the school before I got there."

"Well, the school ones are fine. It's the stuff before it that's depressing. So, how're things at the school? Things settling down again after the field trip from hell?" asked Amanda, smoothly changing the subject away from her.

"Bruising is starting to go away, and I think I've finally got all the mud out of my ears, skin has never been smoother though. I was sort of one of the lucky ones though, no being eaten by Dinosaurs or having my fingers bitten off." Laurie replied, thinking of Kyle and Yvette. They'd come out of the experience a little worse for wear. She'd been able to help with Yvette at least. Kyle, well, she hoped he talked to someone about it before it ate him up inside.

Amanda winced. "Yeah, I'd heard about that. Hell of a thing to go through. But the fact you lot did make it through... well, it's a sign of just how good you are at looking after yourselves." Her voice grew serious. "You might not always get that, at the school. They're responsible for you, so they tend to have a fit if anything happens. But the thing is, if anything does happen? Well, I worry about you lot, but I know you'll come out of it." She grinned wryly. "But that's not an excuse to ignore the security shite. No point tempting fate, hey?"

"No tempted fate, least not by me. I've had more then enough of my share of danger. Even if I did get to kill a Dinosaur by shooting it in the brain. That was cool." Laurie replied, noting the change of lights and stopping at the sidewalk.

"Really? Shot it with what?"

"Part of Forge's leg, actually. Although he'd built it into a really cool bow, and gave me some arrows he'd made as well. I managed to blow up another of them with one of the explosive tips he'd done." Laurie replied, continuing to walk now that the lights had changed again.

"I'm glad you mentioned the bow part, since I had this image of you hitting the thing over the head with Forge's leg, like some old lady with an umbrella," Amanda said with a snicker, having to increase her pace a little to keep up with the taller girl. Good to see Xavier's was keeping up its tradition of Tall People. "'S pretty impressive - you do that sort of thing for a hobby, do you? I mean the bit with the bow, not the blowing up dinosaurs."

Laurie thought for a moment about the image that Amanda had just conjured up and then laughed. It would have been an interesting sight, that was for sure. "Yup, learnt it at one of those Summer camps they send you to when you're a kid and your Mom has to work during the holidays. Cross country running was 'my' sport but archery was the thing I really enjoyed." Laurie replied, pausing at a faded hopscotch drawing on the pavement. She grinned at Amanda, and then hoped down the drawing on one leg, putting her arms up in a V for victory when she got to the end.

"Never was much for sports myself when I was at school, unless you count running away from the plods," Amanda said wryly, laughing at Laurie's antics. She hesitated, glancing around in case Remy or Pete was around, and then followed Laurie's lead, Doc Martens clomping on the pavement as she hopped. "Fuck, haven't done that since I was a nipper," she said, shaking her head. "My first foster family taught me a bunch of normal kid games - they had a couple of kids of their own who used to play with me." She looked wistful for a moment. "Long time ago now, of course."

"Kid's games are always the most fun. They don't know they're meant to be all sageish and solemn, so they're all about the running and the jumping, and the twirling around till you feel sick and fall over." Laurie replied, eyeing the cars going past thoughtfully. "Plods?"

"Police," Amanda clarified. "Part of that colourful past I'm not supposed to corrupt you lot with." She winked at Laurie as she stopped at a small store. "Here we are. Let's hope Ranjeet got rid of all the dinosaur shit." Yanking the door open set the bell on it to jangling, and she waved to the middle-aged Indian man behind the counter. "All right, Ranjeet?"

"Good afternoon, Miss Amanda!" he said, beaming at her. "I hope you are not having the dinosaurs chasing you again? Such a mess I am not seeing for a long time!"

Laurie filed away the new word for some later possible use, scrabble came to mind. She wondered if house rules allowed for British slang. She smiled at Ranjeet and picked up a packet of jelly beans from the front counter as she waited for Amanda to make her purchase.

"Packet of Marlboro, Ranjeet, plus the sweets," Amanda asked, wrinkling her nose at the 'miss' as she always did. She suspected Ranjeet used it on purpose. "And no dinos, I promise. Tho' I thought for a minute you'd hired on new staff when I saw that little bleeder standing there. This is Laurie, by the way. Laurie, Ranjeet."

"I am pleased to be meeting such a lovely young lady," Ranjeet said, smiling widely at Laurie. He looked a little like an Indian Bhudda, with his shiny bald head and little pot belly.

"P-pleased to meet you too." Laurie replied, her hair falling forward across her face as she lowered it slightly in shyness. "You had p-problems with dinosaurs too?"

"Miss Amanda, she is locking one in my shop. Such a mess you never did see," Ranjeet said, not bothered by Laurie's sudden bashfulness. Amanda rolled her eyes as he handed her the cigarettes.

"Well, it was that or have it chase me down the street, and I keep telling you, Ranjeet, I'm not that fit." She dug in her back pocket for her wallet, pulling out a twenty and accepting her change. "Still, you did a good job of cleaning up. What happened to the critter?"

"The men from the zoo, they are taking it away, and good riddance to bad rubbish." He nodded at Laurie. "You are lucky to have such a friend. Just be careful she is not locking dinosaurs in your room," he teased.

"I always thought so." Laurie replied, snickering at the last bit. "It was very nice to meet you, Mr Ranjeet."

"You're such a charmer, Ranjeet," Amanda retorted with a grin as she turned to go. Ranjeet waved her away.

"Go, go, before you are late for your students. And Miss Laurie, it is so nice to meet such a polite girl. You have a good day and maybe I will see you again soon."

"Next time I'm in the city, definitely." Laurie called back as they exited the shop.
