Who: Lorna & Laurie
What Happens Lorna has an offer for Laurie.
OOC Note: I swear! Cross my heart the opening bit was done before the whole concrit thing. *grins* Move right along.
Laurie had made an effort not to run down the stairs and was looking quite composed and at ease as she peered around the door of the main kitchen to see if Lorna was in. The fact that inside she was a boiling mass of excitement and curiosity would only have been apparent to one of the school's telepaths, but she was sure they wouldn't mind excitement and curiosity. It was probably a holiday from the usual mix of teenage angst, pathos and woe that happened when you had a lot of people of around the same age growing up close together.
She wondered what that must feel like to someone who could literally hear people pondering whether that cute guy down the hall really liked them, or was just using them for their homework completion skills.
"Miss Dane?" she asked, making note of the excited tinge to her tone. Oh well, to be a teenager was to be 'up' as it were. She'd have to do some roof sitting in order to make up for it later, couldn't let down her entire age group by not wearing black and going on about existential crisis, after all. It just wasn't the done thing. There needed to be pathos, dammit. Crunchy pathos, the kind you had to wade through with a trowel. She also made a mental note to hide from Cain after he discovered said roof sitting and got angry at her for the dirty footprints on his wonderfully clean roof.
Lorna was sitting at the counter, one leg curled under her. Her hair was pulled tightly back away from her face in a bun, not even a single stray strand escaping, pretty standard for her when she was cooking. She smiled as the girl came in and set down the pen she'd been twirling, "Laurie, hi!"
Laurie grinned at her, moving further into the kitchen, she looked curiously at what Lorna had been doing. "What'cha doin'?" she asked, as she glanced back up.
Lorna lifted the page she'd been marking, "Amara's menu plan for the next couple of weeks. It's part of the requirements for the Advanced Cooking class. They have to come up with balanced meal plan for the whole school taking into account all the various health concerns and dietary requirements of the residents. It's Amara's fault nearly every time something involves sourdough bread. She has this weird love of the stuff."
"Sourdough isn't bad. Me, I prefer Spanakopita, although, anything with feta in it will usually have me asking for seconds." Laurie replied, pulling a chair out for herself. "You said you had a proposal for me?"
"That was a good breakfast you put together. A little light on the nutrition but that's okay every now and then. You've been paying attention in class and you're consistent. I'm wondering if you're a little bored with it though." Lorna crossed out something on Amara's paper and glanced over at Laurie.
Laurie blushed, feeling bad. She had been...unchallenged as of late in the general cooking class, although she supposed that was just a nice way of saying 'bored out of her mind and ready to bounce off the walls'. "Maybe just a little." she answered, hoping that was diplomatic. She didn't want Lorna to think she didn't like the class, because she did. "And pancakes are all about the non-nutrition; it's why they're good for cheering people up. Potato salad and nice fresh bread to put it on is also a good cheering me up food, although that's more a lunch food, then a breakfast one."
"It's okay if you are. It's not a class that's designed to be exciting. Most of the kids want nothing more than to be able to eat their projects at the end of class and they don't need anything else out of it. I just want to make sure they don't starve when they get to college. It's sick how most college students eat, I can't even begin to tell you." Lorna shuddered delicately. "Anyway, if you're bored, then the class isn't doing you any good. So let's get you out of it."
"It has been kinda simple. My Mom taught me most of the stuff I was learning already, since her Mom was huge into cooking, albeit, more a British style menu then I was learning here. What would I do if I wasn't doing the normal cooking class?" Laurie asked, intensely curious now. She had an idea of what Lorna was suggesting but she didn't want to get ahead of herself.
"That's my point; you're beyond the regular class." Lorna tilted her head to the side. "Want to try Advanced? It's more work. A lot more, to be perfectly honest with you. But I'd be happy to have you if you'd like to give it a shot."
Laurie pondered that, she'd offered to help Jean out with med lab and she didn't want to go back on that promise, but if she could work med lab volunteering around the advanced class, it would be perfect. "Could I do it and med lab volunteering at the same time?"
Lorna nodded, "Absolutely. Rahne always did and Sooraya works around her volunteering with Elpis. It's more work than your average class but my job is making sure that it doesn't eat your life. Classes are almost done for this semester so we'll just tweak your current course work for right now. Are you staying here for the summer?"
"I think I'm taking a week off to go somewhere with Mom but otherwise I'll be here for most of it. She's got some work coming up that's going to be keeping her pretty busy so we thought we'd take a long holiday at Christmas and go to Europe or something then." Laurie responded; feeling excited.
The advanced class, which was going to be so cool, she couldn't wait to get started.
"I'll be gone myself a bit for various things, so that's not a problem. We can work around vacations and stuff." Lorna grinned at Laurie. "I'm glad you said yes. I wouldn't say that Advanced is my favorite class but I think we have the most fun. Plus holidays are wild. You'll see."
