The journey home. Pete and Amanda talk.

Pete popped some nicotine gum in his mouth and started chewing, then glanced over at Amanda, across the plane from him.

"Those painkillers helping at all?"

"Some." She was lying across several seats, heedless of her bloodied clothes on the upholstery. A light layer of gauze covered her back, the best they'd been able to do in terms of field medical aid, and blood oozed slowly through it. Turning her head slightly to look at Pete, she added. "'S the fucking unoriginality that gets me. Thousands of spells out there, and they have to go for the one that's already been done?" Her voice shook a little, and she gripped the cushion under her head a little tighter, knuckles already white.

"Yeah, well, they had to quite astonishingly fucking stupid, didn't they? Rack, Patches and Selene, and now this fucking idiot Candra. You think maybe this time someone'll get the hint about what happens when people try this shit on you?"

"People are morons, sometimes. You would have thought someone 'immortal' like Candra would have had more sense." An involuntary shudder came at the memory of that voice, so sweetly concerned. "The kids... they're all right? Angelo?" she asked, focussing on what was important.

"Thought you might ask about that, so I called ahead." Pete grinned. "Relax. Charlie's heavy mob are getting quite good at rescuing the kidnapped. A few minor injuries, but nothing people won't recover from."

Amanda's posture relaxed slightly at the news, and she lay her head down on the cushion again. "Thank fuck for that," she murmured. The movement set off a whole new flare of pain and she said, mainly to keep her mind of it: "Still, you're getting enough practice and all. Right impressive entrance that must have been. I'm sorry I missed it, what with being passed out and all."

Pete looked away for a second. "Not really. It got a job done, but it's not something I'd call impressive."

She watched him, pale face still. "I keep putting you in these situations, don't I?" she said softly, but with no real note of apology. "Wish I didn't, but I'm fucking glad you're there." Her gaze flickered around the plane, as much as she was able. "All of you. Tho' I think Sof's couch is going to have a bit of extra wear and tear."

"No, I wouldn't say it was you that put us in these situations. It'd say it was a collection of mad bastards, who the world is better off without, anyway." Pete shrugged. "And I can buy Sofia as many new couches as she needs."

A noise that might have been a chuckle, had it not come out so strained. "You probably could and all." She took a breath, gasped a little. "We'll be back home soon, yeah?" she asked, a little tightly.

"Yeah. Emma's got people waiting to meet us as soon as we land. Just hang in there."
