Kevin meets Fred Duncan after arriving at the FBI field office

The briefing room in the field office was bare, dominated by a huge mirror on the west wall and the large and featureless table. Except for the jug of water and the glasses, Kevin was left alone to wait. After a indeterminable amount of time, the door opened and a short, thin man walked in, carrying a file folder. He looked more like a lawyer or an accountant, until he reached into his pocket and pulled out a badge and laid it on the table.

"Mr Ford. I'm Fred Duncan. I'm the Deputy Assistant Director of Investigations for the FBI. I'm also the ranking officer here at the office. Before we do anything, I want you to know that you don't have to talk to me without a lawyer present. You have that right under the law." He motioned to the mirror and sat down. "There's no one monitoring this session, and it's not being recorded. So I'd like to talk to you know if you're willing."

Kevin had been trying to pull his hood more and more over his head, attempting to cover as much of himself just in case. Hiding also seemed like a dandy idea right about now. He'd kept glancing at the mirror, wondering who was behind there, wondering what they were watching and if stuff like trying to pull his hood over more was causing little judgments to be made regarding his psychological state or guilt.

When the door opened Kevin's eyes darted to the man who walked in, listening and nodding in acknowledgment. His eyes continued to dart over to the mirror, unsure if he believed Mr. Duncan or not. Surely they wouldn't put him in a room with an obvious two-way mirror if they didn't want to watch him and listen. Mr. Duncan seemed like an alright guy, though. He was slightly more polite than Mr. Kane had been, but how was Kevin to decide whether or not he was getting truth or tweaked versions of it. Cocking his head to the side, Kevin's only response was, "Mr. Kane suggested silence."

"He did, because that's what you do when you're trying not to make a bad situation worse." Fred said, arranging himself at the table. "But I'm a little higher up the ladder than him, Kevin. Which means I get a say in what the situation actually will be."

He opened up a file and pulled out a document. "Kevin, you've been charged with first degree murder in regards to the death of your father. The circumstances are complex, to the point that I'm not entirely convinced that the evidence supports the charge. Or that your mutation doesn't warrant additional consideration. So I'd like you to tell me what happened."

Kevin disliked this entire situation. He was still deciding if he should tell this Mr. Duncan anything at all. After all, he had a right to not say anything without a lawyer. A lawyer he didn't actually have, but there was a hypothetical lawyer somewhere in the mix, right? "What d'ya mean you get a say in what the situation will be? Seems sorta vague ta me." The sort of vague that could lead him into some sort of trap, to be specific.

"Ain't nothin' complex about it, Mr. Duncan. Y'all know wha' happen enough ta arrest me Ah'd think ya'd know enough ta know it ain't complicated at all. S'all in perception, Ah suppose." He shrugged, making no move to tell a complete stranger about the single worst day of his life.

"The facts are that the remains of your father where found in your home, and you were not. Your powers are documented to cause death with a short touch." Duncan said. "Flight is extremely suspicious, Mister Ford. If it was an accident, why didn't you stay? Why haven't you come forward since? I'm sorry to say, but the local authorities do have a case. That's why I want you to tell me."

Kevin thought clearly these people weren't necessarily too bright. If someone else reduced his father to ashes, why would he stay? Maybe he saw it happen, then of course he'd run. If he did it then why would he stay? Accidentally killing your father didn't seem to be something he'd think most people would handle very well, especially when they were turning everything else into dust as well. "Ah think Mr. Kane was right and silence is better given you haven' even answered mah question. You make statemen's about how you've got this say in the situation but don' clarify. Tha' seems pretty suspicious ta me."

"Mister Ford," Duncan said tiredly. "Right now, you're being held here until you can be transfered back to Georgia to face trial. If I choose, I can have a word with the Justice Department and have your case taken to the federal level. If I feel that it is merited. Right now, your father is dead. They think they know why, and I'm willing to keep an open mind. Xavier's has done enough for us that I'm willing to give them special consideration. Which is also why Agent Kane isn't getting an official reprimand for ignoring procedure while bringing you in."

Personally, Kevin didn't care how tired Mr. Duncan seemed. This was Mr. Duncan's job, Kevin was just here because he had no choice. "What procedure'd he ignore?" He was genuinely curious. It wasn't like he knew much of anything about the law other than the ones you didn't break that everyone knew. He didn't know there was a procedure. Mr. Kane just showed up in his room and told him he was arrested and why. Kevin had gone along quietly like Mr. Kane wanted. Where did he mess up?

"Mister Duncan, Ah realize this is yer job an' all, but Ah think maybe they need to get you boys some lessons. Jus' 'cause it been a while since mah daddy die don't mean I done accepted it or moved on or whatever you people seem to think has happened. Ah know mah daddy's dead," Kevin stopped, having to take a few deep breaths before continuing. This was not the easiest subject for him to deal with, especially when other people brought it up in that nonchalant tone Mr. Duncan was using. "Bu' he was a person, he was a good man an' he deserves a right bit more respect than Ah'm hearing comin' from you regarding 'im. Ah find it offensive and rude. So if you don' mind, Ah'd rather wait an' talk to mah lawyer, who will at least pretend ta care and probably show a right bit more tact than you've done shown." His eyes were glistening at this point, the unshed tears collecting at a increasingly rapid rate. Taking another deep breath, Kevin sniffed and tried to push the urge to cry back.

"I'm sorry you feel this way, Mister Ford." Duncan folded his tablet away and quietly left the room.
