Kurt and Amanda, Saturday afternoon
Oct. 20th, 2007 01:52 pmAmanda tracks down her big brother and they talk about the wedding and how things are with the clan.
Why Kurt had ended up in charge of most of the camp's children, rather than one of the grandmothers, was anyone's guess. Except to look at him, leading them in some sort of tag game... well, then it became obvious. He was, equally obviously, having the time of his life.
Coming out of the family caravan, where she'd been getting the third degree about Angelo from her sister and her soon-to-be sister in law, Amanda couldn't help but smile as she watched Kurt with the kids. He was a natural with them, and it was obvious he was happy. That thought made her smile turn a little sad - it was looking more and more like Kurt wouldn't be coming back to the school. "Hey Blue," she called, crossing the grass towards him.
He glanced up towards her with a smile, detaching one of the younger girls - barely more than a toddler - from his arm as he straightened up. "Hello, jel'enedra. How are you?"
"Good. I see you're having fun," she said, hands in the pockets of her jacket. "Renting yourself out as a climbing gym, are you?"
"The children enjoy it so", he said, a little abashed but still smiling. "It is a joy to spend time with them."
"That's easy to see." The small tribe of children hadn't gone far, engaged in some kind of game that involved a lot of giggling. "And you never know, Stefan and Mirela'll be adding to the pack for you sometime soon."
Kurt laughed, stepping over to hug her now he was unencumbered with small people. "I would not doubt it. It is good to see you."
"Good to see you too." It was a little muffled from the fur, and she was smiling as she was released. "You look well - being here suits you."
"It always did", he said quietly. "You know how I missed this, when I could not return to it simply for wanting to."
"Yeah, I do." She squeezed his arm. "It's good to see. I guess you're pretty settled here now, yeah?"
"...yes", Kurt admitted. "I suppose I am. But it does not mean that... that I will never return to America. You will be there, if there were nothing else to bring me back."
"They miss you," she said gently. "At the school."
"And I miss them. But... I cannot go back. Not yet. Perhaps I will become tired of the quiet life, hm?"
She chuckled a little. "Maybe. I can't really see the high-flying Nightcrawler settling down too much." She glanced back at the caravan. "Mirela seems like a good sort. She makes Stefan laugh - I like that."
"He needs someone who can", Kurt agreed. "Especially now. So much responsibility, it would weigh down any man, and Stefan has always tended to be serious. But Mirela will put a stop to that when it gets too much."
"Yeah, she will. He got lucky, finding her. She's so good with Meg, too." Amanda was able to say the younger girl's name without the guilt of the year before - knowing Meggan was safe and happy had done much for her ability to forgive herself. "Tho' Stefan said something about having a talk with Angelo at some point - I hope he doesn't bring out the threats. They're really not needed."
"If he does", Kurt assured her, "they will be less serious than simply what he feels is his duty. He will do it to Jimaine, too, when the time comes."
"How's Jimi doing? She seems to be getting used to things." Amanda didn't want to think about her little sister getting married, even though she was being considered as getting 'too old' by the grandmothers of the clan.
"She is adapting", Kurt said easily. "She still misses Mother, of course, but... she has no shortage of things to keep her busy. She never expected to be the heir as draborni, so she never studied for it until now."
"Heh. It's a bit overwhelming, learning everything from scratch." Amanda knew this intimately. "I'll let her know she can call me if she needs anything, if she wants to."
"I will tell her so too", Kurt promised. "Though I cannot promise she will. She is so proud, like you..."
"We're alike in a lot of ways - she wouldn't have been able to do what she did if we weren't. Still, she's in a place now where she can be who she wants, and she's got help, if she takes it."
"She will take it from Stefan and I", he said confidently. "And... to an extent... from the older women. I will work on persuading her to take it from you, if it is necessary. She truly wants to learn."
"Well, if anything, she knows I've got access to a lot of books." Amanda grinned.
Kurt couldn't help laughing at that, glad to hear Amanda joking about it - that had to mean forgiveness. "That is very true."
