Backdated Laurie offers Marie some comfort while she watches over Garrison.
A cup came into view as Laurie placed her hand gently on Marie's shoulder, a smile gracing her features as she noted the sleeping form of Mr Garrison. Marie had kept an almost constant watch on her boyfriend since they'd been rescued and Laurie knew she had to be tired. She'd have suggested a bed in one of the spare rooms but she had a feeling the older woman wouldn't accept.
"Thought you could use a pick me up," she said, speaking softly so as not to wake anyone.
At the unexpected touch, Marie started slightly. She had been so wrapped up in her thoughts that she hadn't even heard Laurie enter the room. "Thanks," Marie said with a grateful smile once she heard the familiar voice. "Though make sure you take care of yourself too...Ah know you've been doing a lot down here since we all got back."
"Dr Voght has told me in no uncertain terms if I pass out on her due to lack of sleep she'll ban me from Medlab for a month," Laurie replied, pulling over one of the visitor chairs and taking hold of her own mug with both hands now she'd given Marie hers. "He'll be fine, you know?"
"Ah know. Handy to have a boyfriend with a healing factor," Marie said, one hand reaching out to gently brush Garrison's cheek. She bit her lip to keep from saying her next thought - that she wasn't acting the way she was simply because her boyfriend had been injured. It was who had done the injuring and the fact that the bastard had gotten away again. "And he'd be fine even without it. He's too stubborn to ever give up on anything," she said, trying to pull her thoughts away from Magneto.
"How have you been holding up?" Laurie asked, taking a sip of her tea. Despite the fact Marie was invulnerable, there was more then one way to be injured. She was no Mr Haller, but sometimes you didn't have to be a psychiatrist to listen to a friend.
"Ah'm fine," Marie lied, her mug still clutched in one hand. She hadn't taken a sip since Laurie had handed it to her and her eyes suddenly focused on the amber liquid swishing inside the ceramic container. "It's just...well, you're a trainee now right? How much backreading have you done?"
"Some, a lot from when the X-men first formed and a lot on the recent stuff. Not so much from the middle years though," Laurie explained, noticing that Marie hadn't touched any of her tea. "Did something happen?"
"Ah can just never take him down," she said softly, not even knowing if Laurie would know which him she was talking about. "No matter what, he gets away. It shouldn't be possible."
She'd read some of the mission reports from the latest outing, it had given her something to do when she wasn't helping Dr Grey-Summers or Dr Voght. "He won't always," she said, not knowing what else to say.
"Ah'll believe that when Ah'm at his funeral." At this rate it'll be from old age. She let out a sigh, her gaze traveling to the prone Canadian's body, her eyes lingering on the newly formed scars.
Laurie reached over and placed a hand over Marie's, squeezing for a second before she released her and sat back. "I could try and help him heal faster, if you wanted. I...well, I helped Amanda out like that, awhile ago. I don't know what it'll do with someone with a healing factor, but, well, I can try."
"You'll have to ask him when he wakes up," Marie said, forcing a smile. "But it's a really sweet offer, thanks. Ah have a feeling he'll tell you to keep your strength though." Finally take a sip of her tea, Marie swished the liquid around slowly in her mouth before swallowing it. "So how are you holding up? This is the first time you've really been in on knowing what's going on teamwise and it was a pretty big one."
"I'm doing alright, it helps to have something to do," Laurie said, eyes drifting to the door of Garrison's room and the rest of the Medlab. "I didn't even get injured, not like the others."
"And that's a good thing," Marie said firmly. "Otherwise who would we have helping put everyone back together?" Marie smiled at the younger girl, remembering what it had been like when she'd first joined the team. How nervous she'd been that first time in leathers, in the president's office. How she'd wondered what she could do to help, compared to 'Ro, to Scott, to Kurt. She wondered if Laurie had the same kind of thoughts, though she hoped Laurie already knew that her mere presence was helpful, her ability to calm and soothe her teammates, both with and without her powers.
