After things begin winding down in Canada, Kevin and Dani take a few minutes to recoup and ultimately pass out.
It was sheer strength of will that kept Kevin's teeth from chattering. He was clothed, which was a nice change, but he maintained if it was cold enough for there to be snow on the ground it was definitely entirely too cold to be stripping off your shirts and hugging trees or walls or rubble to decompose it. Entirely too cold, but that's what Kevin had been doing for the better part of the day as part of the rescue effort. Now he was fairly sure he was still mostly numb from about the knee upward. His skin tingled in odd ways and he wasn't sure why he kept reaching out to touch things and get confused that his glove was there. His gloves were always there.
Right now he was going to blame it all on exhaustion. It had been a long day and he was still partially on Scotland time because he'd never had a really good reason to adjust to this side of the Atlantic but he didn't think he should be this tired when all he'd done was decompose a lot of stuff. Just stuff. Still, he got as far as a couch in the lounge area of the lodge before his knees buckled and he was forced to catch himself on the arm of the couch, eyes fighting to stay open.
Dani was making a fresh pot of coffee for the workers, her powers weren't the best for the rescue part of 'search and rescue' and now that the searching was mostly over, she was trying to keep herself occupied and out of the way. Taking a couple quick strides across the tent, Dani crossed it quickly and grabbed Kevin's arm firmly, keeping him upright. "No falling," she ordered, helping him sit down gently.
Satisfied that he wasn't going to bust his head open, she went back to the little hot plates they were using and poured him a cup of coffee, "Cream or sugar?" she asked, pouring hot water for herself and adding a little tea bag. Dani and caffeine were not friends, at all.
"Yeah, righ'," he said in a distracted tone, shaking his head. He managed to sit down with her help but it took a bit of time for him to even realize who it was who had grabbed his arm. His brain was doing that fuzzy thing still, only it had crept in from the edges to cover about half of his consciousness. Not really useful. His eyes swept over to register that it was Dani, that was her name right? "Sugar," that was the right answer, he was pretty sure. "A lotta sugar. An' cream. A little." Belatedly he added a softer than usual, "please."
It was sort of like having a hang over without the drinking, which took the whole reason for a hang over to be worth it away. He leaned over, elbows on his knees and let his head fall into his hands. Why did he just want to sleep so badly?
Adding the little packets of sugar and dried creamer to the styrofoam cup, Dani brought both cups over, setting hers down on the floor before handing Kevin his. She wanted to make sure he could hold it before drinking her own drink, "You're welcome," she said, rubbing his shoulders. He looked like he needed his head rubbed, but Dani had heard about his mutation and after living with Marie for so long she was used to being careful.
"Thanks," his voice came out a little forced and near a whisper. Of course, a whisper for Kevin was nearly inaudible to most people but he wasn't really worrying too much about it right now. His hands wrapped around the cup, then he slid one underneath it because his grip was feeling a bit shoddy. Sipping it slowly, Kevin paid attention to the heat running down his throat and how it nearly burned against the coldness of his lips. He was too distracted to even freak out over Dani touching him, too busy trying to pull his consciousness out of the stick molasses it had fallen into. "We have anythin'...carb-like? Bread, protein bar, whatever?" Anything that might give his system energy other than just caffeine so he could maybe not feel like slumping over and sleeping for months.
Satisfied that he wasn't going to spill the hot liquid over himself, Dani picked up her own cut and took a sip of the tea. It was off-brand herbal whatever, but it was caffeine free and hot and that was the important thing. "I can look," she had only gotten to the tent a few minutes earlier to find the coffee, she hadn't found anything else yet. Standing, she began looking inside boxes for things. "Cup O Noodle?" she asked, holding one up. "Chicken or beef."
Kevin didn't even turn to look, it took too much energy. He did groan slightly. Rescue people from an avalanche and the best they could manage was Cup O Noodle? That was so sad. "Chicken." The response had taken longer than he thought it was, silence stretching out as he tried to get his mouth to work. After another sip of coffee he slumped a little and ended up brushing his cheek against the edge of the table only for a moment. It made his skin stop tingling. He didn't even realize what he was doing for a few moments. Two inches of the underside of the table was dust before Kevin pulled himself away and made himself lean toward the other side of the chair.
Dani had turned away to make the soup, if you could call it soup, pouring the hot water into the cup to cook everything in it. She rather liked Cup O Noodle sometimes, but that was more for the nostalgia factor from her childhood when they couldn't afford better. Xavier's had opened her world up more than she had ever dreamed. "It's cooking" she told him, making a face as she saw the table. Resisting the urge to remind Kevin to be more careful, she opted for a slightly different approach, "You use your powers a lot?"
It took a few moments for his reaction to manifest, but eventually his head shook slowly. He forced himself to drink more coffee. At least it helped him warm up sort of. He kept having to rest it on his thigh carefully though because he was sure he was about to drop it most of the time. "Ah never use 'em. 'Specially not on purpose er nothin'." He wavered slightly, but Kevin reminded himself to stay away from the table and so he swayed away from it and leaned more heavily against the plastic arm of the chair he sat in.
"And now you are," Dani nodded, it seemed to be a common thing actually, "Which is why you are so tired. When you use your powers more than normal, you get super tired. Happens to me sometimes too," and the sleep was always so nice. Insomnia was not fun, even if she had learned to work with it and not fight it so much.
"So Ah feel like Ah wanna collapse 'cause o' mah powers an' usin' 'em?" More reasons to not use them. Ever. Kevin knew there were people who would take this opportunity to tell him that he really needed to do the powers training thing so he could use them and not want to black out, but Kevin was of the opinion that all things would be solved simply by not using them.
"Basically," Dani was no expert on these things, "Want more?" she asked, heating up another pot of water. "It doesn't quite work that way with me, but then my control ain't always the best all the time. It's not too bad though, so long as we don't touch skin to skin. Which ain't an issue, innit?" she asked, referring to her long sleeves and pants and not his.
"Mummified ain't really tha 'in' trend this season," he said a bit blearily. "No such thin' as control." Kevin was staring into his cup of coffee, trying to register whether or not he wanted more. "Ah don' even really like coffee, y'know. No matter how much sugar Ah put in...still tastes like coffee." Did that even make sense? His brain was going in circles incoherently. He wanted to sleep. Was sleep a good idea? Was it like having a concussion where you really shouldn't sleep? Kevin was pretty sure he didn't want more coffee but he sipped at the big left in his cup anyway. What he really wanted, honestly, was his boyfriend, but he didn't know where Jay was.
Pouring herself another cup of tea, Dani sat back down leaning against him lightly to let him know that if he wanted to fall asleep on her it was okay, "This isn't good coffee either," she pointed out. "Good coffee shouldn't overwhelm everything else, but compliment it. The work is almost over, you can sleep soon" she tried to reassure him, patting his leg. She liked that she couldn't sense his fears, it was odd, but a nice change.
Kevin wouldn't fall asleep on her, he knew that. Hair was bad. Skin was bad. And then she'd end up at least with a hole in her shirt or something. Yeah, bad idea. He did appreciate the thought, though. If he was more coherent he would have wondered why he wasn't having a panic attack over her being so close. "Ya seen Jay 'round at all?" Kevin had to learn away from Dani for a moment to shake his head as if the physical motion would clear it at all. It didn't help.
The now empty cup was placed on the table and Kevin finally pulled the hood of his shirt up over his head, which was then followed by the hood of his jacket. He leaned on Dani a little but kept his head up. He didn't want to maybe do the falling asleep and never waking up thing. He was pretty sure he wouldn't like that.
Humming a tune under her breath, Dani didn't mind that Kevin was covering himself up, she trusted he would do whatever he needed to to be safe like Marie did, "Not since early this morning. He'll come find you though, if you want to close your eyes. You will wake up if you do," she had sensed that clearly enough. At least that wasn't as bad as some things she saw. "I'll make sure you do."
"Thanks, but...if Ah sleep tha wakin'...don' think it'll be easy." But his eyes wouldn't listen to him and stay open any more. His head was slowly dropping onto her shoulder as he muttered, "Maybe if ya poke me real hard." In the back of his head he felt that it'd be okay, because Jay could manage to wake him up. And Jay would find him, 'cause she said he would, and he'd get him back to their room and keep people safe from Kevin. That was important.
"I'll let you know when Jay arrives back," Dani promised, rubbing his back until his breathing steadied, then closed her eyes herself and tried to relax some. They had all worked hard today and had earned a catnap.
