Jan & Laurie log
Feb. 5th, 2008 05:15 pmLaurie and Jan discuss everything from hair colour to local job opportunities.
Laurie pressed play on the DVD and rested her head against the bottom of the couch. She was currently sprawled on the floor of the TV room, a bowl of chips within reaching distance and nail polish held firmly in hand.
"Sooo, what colour would you like?" she asked Jan, turning her head to look at the other girl.
"What's the brightest shade?" Jan asked, peering at the polish. "Got a nice bright blue or purple, maybe even green? Something neon?"
"Neon?" Laurie questioned, expression somewhat amused. "I have...sparkly dark purple, but no neon shades."
She looked at the TV, changing the channel as the news came on. While she didn't mind watching the news, there were times when she really didn't want to know what was going on in the world, at least for the afternoon at least.
"Ooh, sparkly!" Jan answered happily. "That'll work! I've been thinking about dying my hair, maybe I can dye it purple to match!"
Laurie thought about it for a moment, with Jan's complexion she could probably make a shade of purple work quite well, maybe something close to Ms Braddock's colour, even. "Hmm, it might look good. You'd probably want to do a test patch first or something in case it looks horrible though."
She picked up the bottle of purple glittery nail polish and gestured for Jan to rest her foot on Laurie's knees.
Jan obliged. "If it looks horrible, even though I don't imagine it would, I could just dye it again. Besides, I don't have to use a permanent colour; they have temporary ones, too! I could pick something that would be easy to wash out, and I could even do different colours different weeks!"
"True, you know...I could dye my hair green if you dye yours purple." Laurie said with an easy grin, she'd always wanted to try a different colour.
"Green? Hmm..." Jan looked at Laurie's face carefully. "You can give it a shot. Might depend on the shade, but yeah, I can totally see that working for you."
"I was thinking maybe forest green, sort of a dark emerald colour." Laurie mused, applying the base coat to Jan's toenails. "Maybe in a washout dye though, just in case it really looks horrible. Do you think Ms Dane would mind me stealing her hair colour for fun and profit?"
"I dunno," Jan replied thoughtfully. "She might like it, or she might be weirded out. You never know how some people take these things. Maybe you should let her know in advance, make sure she's ok with it?"
Laurie thought about that for a moment, pulling Jan's other foot towards her and applying the base coat to those toenails as well. "You know, I think that's probably a good idea. I'll talk to her later on about it. So, how's the weather in Jan world?"
"Sunny and shiny, of course!" Jan said, grinning. "What's it like over there in Laurie world?"
"Hmm, sunny with occasional rains, I'm thinking." Laurie replied, finishing the base coat. "I didn't get the Florist job I wanted. So terribly unfair selecting someone with more experience, you'd think they'd rather someone of my obviously sunny disposition."
"That's sooo unfair!" Jan mock-complained. "Hey, their loss, right? They don't know what you're missing, and I'm sure you can find something else you like.'
"Yeah." Laurie said, placing Jan's feet down and motioning for her hands. If she did the base coat on Jan's fingernails as well, by the time she was finished, her toenails should be dry enough to continue. "I was actually thinking of maybe talking to Mr Dayspring. I mean, getting some experience with office type work could be good, and it'd be right here on campus so I wouldn't have to give up anything else that I'm doing."
Jan peered down, examining her feet, and then held a hand out to Laurie. "So you'd ask for a paying job, not just a volunteer deal?"
"I volunteer for Red X; I figure if I'm going to work for Elpis, I should at least get paid for it." Laurie said, taking Jan's hand and reaching for a little wooden stick to push back the cuticles on each nail before she applied the base coat. "I need some money, and I figure if Mr Dayspring is willing to pay me to work for him, then I'm not going to say no to it. I think he pays Angelo and John anyhow."
"Well, yeah, but they're all grown up. At least Angelo is." Jan grinned. "And you, my dear Laurie, wonderful as you are, aren't quite done with high school yet. Do Sooraya and Yvette get paid? I mean, I doubt it'd be a problem for you to be paid, I'm just wondering."
"I don't think they do, actually. But, maybe they never thought to ask? I don't think I'd really want to volunteer for any extra work without being paid for it, I've got enough of that with Med lab, and my advanced cooking classes and Red X as well. Then, next year I'm going to have to find somewhere to do Pre-med classes, and that's going to be difficult enough. Guess all I can do is ask, hey?" Laurie mused, starting to apply the nail polish to Jan's nails. "All he can say is no, after all."
"Yep!" Jan nodded. "And hey, I can't say for sure, but yeah, if he pays John, I'm sure he can pay you something. Just tell him you're interested in working for Elpis and see what he says."
