Jay distributes water and comes upon Dani. He hits a tender spot.
Dani's powers did not lend themselves very well to construction, and they didn't need anyone else helping to cook or serve in the roach coaches or mess tents, so she was working taking care of kids affected by the disaster who had no one or no where to go. It was different from what she was used to, and this was really the first time she had been near children for extended periods since Billy. She was doing okay though, at least in her opinion, which she defined as not sleeping any less than she normally did or getting upset when she looked at the kids. Today she had been helping them make a paper mache piñata for the upcoming barbeque at the end of the week. She didn't speak Spanish and for the most part the kids didn't speak English, but they were having fun and staying out of trouble, which was the goal.
Jay was taking a break from construction, on a rotation for water delivery when he came upon a bunch of kidlets and Dani. Sauntering up with the crate in hand, Jay set it down on the floor and picked up a few bottles. "Hey Dani, thirsty?" he asked, holding out a bottle and waving it to her before he would toss it. He didn't want her to drop it on anyone's head if she missed catching.
"Sure!" she called, adjusting the girl she was carrying on her back so she could catch the water bottle. The kids practically swarmed Jay, all wanting water bottles of their own. "Hey! Back up! Halto, halto!" she spoke a rudimentary Spanish at best, but had been picking up words steadily since she had arrived. The kids were good teachers.
He backed up a pace as the kids rushed him and Jay plucked out a few water bottles, before they were grabbing from him and the crate. "Like danglin' a worm fer baby birds," he finally gave up and let them fend for themselves, lifting his wings so he wouldn't knock any of them and stepping out of the fire. "So ya been 'ere this whole time? Ya got tha' nurturin' way 'bout ya," he said, moving to stand next to her. "This jus' a day care?"
Shooting Jay a glare, Dani was secretly pleased, "I ain't nuturin' nothin'," she said sharply, "I gave that idea up," well, she'd given Billy to Hank, and she was too busy to date much less think about starting a family now. In fact, she didn't much want to right now even though she knew she'd have two or three kids by now had she remained in Oklahoma. "Sides, I got better things to do now."
"An' tha', Ah don' believe. No woman gives up 'er nurturin' side." He looked thoughtfully at the kids. "An' wha' you got better ta do than this? Yer nurturin' yer instincts. Nothin' wrong with that."
"Pablo! Aqui, por favor!" she called, using some of her newly learned Spanish words, as one little boy began wandering off. Jay was really beginning to piss her off, he knew what she'd been through and she was enjoying her self-denial despite not being in Egypt. "I have school and work and if I feel the need to mother someone, I can just feed Forge or something. I don't need no damn kids, Jay!"
Jay put up his hands in defence, shifting his wings. "Okay, okay. No need ta get mad. Ah mean, if ya wanna feed Forge, than tha's fine. He jus' ain' wha' tha nurtin' bill fits, if ya -- hey wait, wha' 're ya feedin' Forge tha' ya arn' feeding me?" he asked, accusingly.
Making a mental note to see Dr. Samson soon, Dani nodded, calming down. Jay had hit a sore spot she had thought was more healed than this, "Fine, fine. I can feed you too, feed one, feed two ain't any difference. He just appreciates good Cheyenne cooking more. Thanks for the water," she handed her bottle to Pablo and let him drink.
"Depends on wha' yer offerin', though Ah'll take anything ya put down in front o' me. Except it's better if Forge ain' there." He shoved his hands into his pocket. "Cause Ah want all the food ta maself an' Kevin. If he's 'round. If not, then, it can be all jus' fer me." He didn't mind. He'd bargain for anything to get a home cooked meal. Anything. "Anyways, Ah gotta go before Ah get hell. Ah promised ta have all this water out by a certin' time an' now Ah'm late."
