Backdated pre-RX:R - After her run-in with Mindee, Jane is maybesortakinda thinking about girls in a new light, and Monet ends up as her cornered confidant.
I am SO bored.
Jane scrawled the words across a sheet of paper for what felt like the zillionth times, and stared at it morosely. It was true. Even drawing the 'o's as hearts hadn't helped relieve the crushing boredom, and it had been like this ALL DAY. In fact, if she sat here much longer, it was entirely possible she might scream.
...
Well, maybe not. But the potential was there!
Monet was sitting opposite her, watching the clock tick around. She'd finished what she'd been working on a few minutes ago and was wondering, yet again, whether staying with Elpis just to prove that she could was a good idea. After all, she could be filing her nails or oh... anything else. Besides, it was almost five and she could feel the waves of boredom rolling off Jane.
"Oh, heck yes!" Jane was out of her seat and flipping off her computer even before she finished the sentence. trust Monet to come up with the most sensible solution. Surely the phones could mind themselves for this last little bit of time. It wasn't like they were ringing off the hook. "Hey, you wanna go get a drink or something?" She asked the other woman. "I'm not sure I want to go back to the mansion until the suits have cleared out for the day."
"Shall we go to that little place that does the good coffee as well as drinks? I'm still recovering from Jay's attempts at bartending." Monet shook her head. "What is with all those people in suits around here at the moment, anyway?"
"I have no idea, all I know is I have to stay completely out of sight when I go flying," Jane shrugged as she remembered the morning's admonition not to go 'wandering around naked' until further notice, 'Somehow, it's because of them. So Jay's not getting any better?"
"You do? Why? They know that there's mutants here, so it shouldn't..."Monet trailed off, remembering seeing Jane side out of her clothes and into her cloud form. "Maybe if you just transformed in a cubicle, like when you go swimming?" Jay, now. "Jay's going to be a good bartender one day, once he learns how much is in a shot and to pour a beer without too much head."
"I'm going to have to do something," Jane agreed, mild irritation coloring her voice. "Anyway, yay Jay. I hope he does well, although I don't see why he wouldn't. Unless he takes out the bottles on the back wall with his wings. You know how they always have them up there? That would be unpleasant." Jane grinned at the mental image complete with fawning patrons. Jay's looks certainly wouldn't hurt him any there.
Monet winced. "Let's not tempt fate. Enough happens around here without that. Anything interesting been happening with you, lately?"
Jane shook her head."Not too much. Took the GED exam, starting to get things together for San Diego. Got caught up in the whole Stepford mess, which was interesting." Maybe a little too interesting, she thought privately. "Did you hear about that?"
"No... What happened?" Monet had a personal policy of trying to avoid the Stepfords whenever possible, as they tended to be more trouble and irritation than they were worth.
"You know how everyone went crazy a couple weeks ago? Well, I guess everyone forgot about the Stepfords and they went crazy a little more quietly and made themselves a whole new sister!" Jane still couldn't get over that concept. Being able to create a whole new person, who was kinda-sorta real was just insane. "And she was getting into all sorts of trouble apparently and," she lowered her voice, "'Mindee' totally hit on me and was asking all sorts of questions about boys and sex and then Nathan kinda cornered the whole mess of them and I think they had to go see the Professor."
Monet blinked. "Wow. They made an entire new sister? That's so fucked up. Kind of cool, though." She frowned. "Erm, how old are they? I mean, you're what 21, right, so aren't they a little young for you? No offense, it's just... Yeah."
"I know! They're only like fifteen or something." There wasn't enough flailing in the world to fully express Jane's thoughts on this. Plus, she liked guys! Mostly! Just because you maybe kinda sorta had a dream about a girl didn't mean you suddenly liked girls, right? "I am so not about jailbait." Or girls. Maybe. "It was just very, very weird."
Monet laughed a little. "That's really good to hear. Jailbait is always a no." She smiled at Jane. "Weird cos they're girls, weird cos they've got that creepy hivemind thing going on or weird cos, hey, jailbait?"
Jane considered this. "All three, kinda. They all play into each other, you know? What do you do when a telepathic teenager comes on to you, particularly when they're a girl and you don't date girls? I don't think there's a specific rule for that sort of situation. Or at least, no-one told me about it."
Monet blinked for a moment. "Oh... you don't? I just kind of assumed that you kind of liked girls."
"Um. Whywouldyouthinkthat?" The words tumbled out in a rush. Oh, gosh. Had Monet just heard what she'd been thinking? "Um. Because I like girls because I'm a girl and I hope I like me but I've, um, never dated a girl so you know I don't think I like-like girls like the way that you think I might like girls." Because really until this past month, the thought hadn't even crossed Jane's mind, and now it seemed to be lurking there somewhere all the time.
"Dude. You were totally checking out whatsername. That girl who works here in the mornings and does the mail." Monet smiled. "She's kind of hot."
"I...I....I..." Jane flushed pink. "Okay, maybe a little."
"Awesome!"
Awesome? Jane cast a surprised look at Monet. "Thanks?"
Monet sighed briefly. "What did you expect, hon? A whole big chorus of 'oh god, nooooo, you looked at a girl?'"
"No! Of course not." Jane frowned and shook her head dismissively. "More 'you haven't figured this out yet?' I mean, what the heck? Shouldn't I have noticed that I might like girls before this?"
Gnh. Why did she always get stuck with the awkward conversations? "You remember what? Your last three years, right? Maybe you had noticed before, but you don't remember. And fuck, you've been busy. Or maybe you just didn't notice before, because. I don't know. "
Monet pulled her hands through her hair, tugging at it in frustration. "You don't actually have to notice everything, all at once."
"Four, actually," Jane muttered. Well, there was a concept she hadn't considered. Maybe she had liked girls Before. She groaned irritatedly. She hated, hated that should couldn't remember basic things like this. "Stupid, broken brain."
Monet took a moment to stick a couple of metaphorical bandaids over the worst sections of her shields as, right now, she really didn't want to overhear much. That done, she reached over and hugged Jane.
"Dude..."
Jane leaned into the hug with a touch of surprise, welcoming it nevertheless. She could really use the reassurance. "Thanks, Monet, I'm sorry for unloading onto you."
Monet suppressed a wince. "Don't worry about it."
