Jane and Dani discuss college over breakfast.

It was Sunday and Dani felt the urge to cook a large, proper breakfast, but going down to the big kitchen was too much effort. That was why she had her suite door propped open, in the hopes that someone would come wandering by for food. She had eggs, juice, bread, and bacon, although none of it was cooked yet. She hadn't decided on making french toast or maybe egg sandwiches. That was where someone else was needed. Decisions were not working for her this morning.

Apparently you didn't need to drink to wake up with a hangover. Having too much sugar, caffeine, and staying up until all hours seemed to do just fine with that respect. Jane slouched up the hall nursing a can of Green Speed, sending up grateful thoughts to the green-haired kitchen goddess for restocking the pantry. Next, once her stomach settled, food would be in order. And maybe some company. Although... Up head the door to Dani's suite was open, and she had said she'd be happy to talk about SUNY...

Shambling forward at slightly faster pace, she stuck her head in the door. "Hey there!"

"Hey!" Dani smiled inviting her in, "French toast or egg sandwiches? And coffee or tea?" she asked, filling the kettle with water. That Jane had an energy drink meant nothing to Dani. Breakfast required either coffee or tea and possibly juice or something else, but always coffee or tea. Never both though, that was gross. "And morning."

"Um, french toast and coffee?" Jane hoped that was the right answer. She chugged down the rest of her drink, willing it to work faster. It looked like she needed her brain. "Whatcha up to?"

"Good choice," Dani commented, pouring the water in the teakettle into the coffee maker and adding a generous scoop of coffee from a bag. While her tastes were still fairly simple, Dani had learned of the difference that quality made. Now she kept coffee in small bags instead of gigantic tins and loose tea instead of store-brand tea bags. It really did make a difference. Mixing cinnamon and sugar with the egg she began heating the pan. "I feel like making breakfast for people. Guess what? You're people."

Ah. That made sense. "Yay for being people," Jane said as she slid into a chair near the kitchenette. "Do you want any help?" Whatever Dani just put in the coffeemaker smelled fantastic.

"Nope," Dani liked to cook and the in-suite kitchenettes weren't really big enough for two, "So GED, huh? Feels good, ain't it?"

"Oh, heck yeah. Funny what a little piece of paper can do for your self-esteem, isn't it?" Really, it did feel like an enormous weight off of Jane's shoulders. It wasn't that she was any smarter than she had been before yesterday, but but almost felt like she was. "I'm still all giggly about the whole thing."

"Any thoughts to a major?" that had been Dani's hardest choice. Initially she was going to major in business administration, and she did have a AS in that, but that wasn't where her passion was. It had taken a while before she had found it though and it was not in business at all, though the degree would hold in her good stead. It was more than she even thought she'd achieve.

Jane shook her head. "Not really. I was looking at the Purchase website and it seemed like they were really big on the whole acting and drama thing and that's not really what I want to do. I'm more interested in doing something that's more math or science-y. But they do have a bio program that looks pretty good." She sighed and slumped back. "I don't know, I never really thought this far ahead, you know? How did you pick your major?"

"Tell me about it," Dani turned the microwave on for the bacon and began cooking the french toast, "I never thought I'd go to any college and here I am working on a 4-year degree. I studied business administration at first because I work here and it is useful. Practical, y'know? Now I'm majoring in social work. I like it. It's needed. Ain't as flexible as business admin, but it means more," Xavier's had that effect on people.

"See, you have a plan. I am so not that far along yet," Jane pointed out with a grin, delicately sniffing the air. Jeez, that bacon smelled good. "I'm still in the lost and confused stage, my mind just isn't that set."

"They tell me that's what the freshman year is for," Dani informed her, placing a couple slices of French toast on a plate and taking the bacon out of the microwave. Adding a mug of coffee in front of her, Dani finished getting the breakfast together. "I ain't got a plan, Jane, I got a lifetime of rez life to leave behind. I can't go back, so I gotta go forward."

Jane accepted her coffee mug gratefully and raised it high. "Here's to building a future."

"A future outside these walls," Dani agreed, tapping her own mug against Jane's then taking a long sip, "Eat up. Energy with empty calories is wasted. What kind of math or science do you want? Or more importantly, what don't you want?" sometimes, it was easier to work backwards, you couldn't tell a story without having an idea of where you wanted it to end.

"No astronomy, probably no physics, unless I take a class or two just for kicks," Jane said thoughtfully, taking up her fork and digging into her french toast greedily. "What I really want is to be able to understand me, so I'm thinking about taking both bio and chemistry. How that translates into a job, I don't really know, although given Purchase's acting school, maybe I could be Ms. Wizard, have my own show?" She grinned. "Actually I like being in Red X a lot. Maybe I could work for them or the Red Cross, give it a shot."

"Genetics is always good for understanding us," Dani pointed out through a mouthful of bacon, "And there's Muir. And now the Institute too. Ain't a lack of jobs, is a lack of knowledge at this point. I like Red X too, been thinking about doing that more. Those kids in San Diego....social work can be anything really, but it's a state-by-state license which is limiting."

"I hadn't really thought of that." Jane sipped delicately on her coffee. The food was delicious, but her stomach was starting to feel really off. That's what happens when you mix too many foods, brat. "Do you think you'll stay here, or go get licensed elsewhere?"

"Where else I gonna go?" she asked, realistically. Not back to Oklahoma, no matter how many social workers the rez needed, "I think I'll stay here unless something happens. This is home now."

"Mine too, although I liked Montana. It was very pretty." Jane moved around some food on her plate. "You could work for the state, and we're not very far from the city." One thing had been worrying her about college though. Purchase was a residential campus and she was worried about fitting in with the other students. The college kids in Helena had been very cliquish. "Is commuting to school weird?"

"The locals mostly know what Xavier's is, so once they know I live here, they know I'm a mutant. And for the most part, people are okay with it," despite their efforts to not attract attention, they had over the years, including a CNN special once, so people knew. Even if they didn't like mutants, they had learned at least to avoid them in town. "Or they're not, but that's their problem, not mine," she thought briefly about her friend, Karen. Dani wasn't sure if she was still alive in her coma or not, but it had been a sad way to end their friendship. "College seems more liberal in general."

"So same as anywhere, then. Good to know." Jane finished off her coffee. She didn't go out of her way to hide that she was a mutant, but she didn't exactly advertise it either, and Jane had gotten used to being pretty anonymous the last few years. "Although if they got on my case, I'd be more than happy to give them a show," she mused aloud. "Lightning bolts included."

Laughing, Dani finished up her coffee and made a long arm for the coffee pot, "More?" she asked, offering. The little pot made four cups so there was plenty left, "I don't advertise my powers and do my best to avoid using them. The students from out of town though, they don't know what Xavier's is, so that's nice. Some anonymity."

"Mmm, maybe just one more." It really was excellent coffee, and Jane was enjoying the company. "This is really good! I'll have to pick some up when I'm at the store. I have errands to run this afternoon, wanna go? I want to hit the fabric shop, I'm going to learn how to sew."

"Talk to Clarice if you want to learn how to sew," Dani advised, beginning to do the dishes, "But I'll go, yeah. I have a few things to pick up too," like more coffee now that this bag was nearly empty. She needed to get dressed too, she was clad only in a pair of cropped pj pants and a tank top. "Give me a few minutes to clean up and get changed?"

"Sure! I need to get dressed too. See you in the foyer in a few?" Jane drank down the rest of her coffee and headed for the door. It was going to be an awesome day.
