Inez arrives at the school.
Clad in her most comfortable jeans and a decent blouse, Dani waited outside for the schools newest arrival. She had heard there was a federal agent invovled somehow and that just did not bode well, though there had been less auspicious entrances to the school. There were few truly good entrances though now that she was thinking about it.
The black sedan stopped outside the gates of the school as they opened. It sat there for a while with the engine running before the back door opened and a young woman stepped out, dragging an overstuffed duffel bag with her. Even from a distance, she could be heard shouting into the car, and the slam of the door as she stalked away was accompanied by the sound of cracking glass.
Stomping up the driveway, the blonde girl looked up at the ivy-covered mansion, noticed Dani, then shrugged and walked over to her. She reached into a pocket and held out a creased letter with an official-looking stamp on it. "I suppose I live here now," she said bluntly.
"I suppose you do," Dani agreed, holding her hand out, "I'm Dani, one of the RA's. Pleased to meet you. Want me to get your bag?" That she had a duffel was a good sign. So many people arrived without anything and starting a life from scratch was always hard. Can't get blood from a turnip and all that.
"I'm fine," the girl said, almost scowling. "So this is, what, some boarding school or something? I saw that it said 'Gifted' or some junk on the sign out there. Looks pretty expensive for a school." She stepped back a bit and took another look. "Don't look like any school I've ever seen."
"It ain't," Dani said truthfully, sitting down in a chair, "Want a seat before you go in?" the girl was already overwhelmed and distrustful, no sense in forcing her into something, "It started out as Professor Xavier's family estate. He turned it into a school for mutants years ago and we're funded partially by him, but also from mutant-supporters and various other things. Almost everyone here is on scholarship in some form or another. Ain't what I expected either," she didn't actually remember most of her arrival to the school, but it had impressed her a good deal and made her wary over the expense.
"Oh," the younger girl said. "The mutant school. Huh."
She definitely didn't sound impressed, although it was obvious that she was trying hard to hide a sense of awe at the size of the mansion. With a thump, she dropped her duffel on the stairs and sat down roughly. "So you all, what, live here? A bunch of mutants, all one big happy family? Because lady, I got to tell you straight up, I ain't looking for any new family. Been bounced out of enough foster homes to know that the only place I belong is with my daddy. This is just temporary, you know."
One big happy? Snorting in laughter, Dani tried to control herself a little better than that, "We have our share of drama," more than their share some times, "So it's temporary. That's okay. You aren't obligated to stay past graduation or pay anyone back. If you want to work on campus, you can. Or off campus if you want. I wasn't planning on staying around here either when I first came," that had changed fairly quickly, but it was a change for the better she had since realized. "There are plenty of options, ain't gotta make a decision now. So you're from Texas? Wherebouts?"
"All over," the new girl said as she arched an eyebrow in surprise, "but I was born in El Paso. Moved all around the Gulf Coast with my daddy. So if I got to live and go to school here, I don't have to check in with a social worker or anything? Just go to class and stuff?"
"I'm from Oklahoma, Cheyenne rez. They ain't too different in some ways," weren't quite the same either, "but yeah. If you have a social worker or whatever, you'll have to follow their rules for checking in or not, I don't know. I was emancipated when I arrived, but mostly it's pretty basic. Go to class, don't fight, that sort of thing.Classes are small so if you need more help in something you can get it. You'll have to share a suite with some other girls. It's not so bad." It looked like Inez might be realizing that this placed wasn't as bad as she had first thought.
"Don't seem too bad, then. Suppose I can stick it out for a bit, if I have to." With a shrug, the blonde girl picked up her duffel and slung it over her shoulder. "I'm Inez," she said without offering a handshake. "Ness if we're friends."
"Danielle, Dani to my friends," Dani stood up, automatically brushing the back of her jeans off, completely unperturbed by Ness's attitude, "I'm sure you've put up with worse. And if nothing else, there is always something going on. Mischief managed and all that."
