Veryvery early this morning. 4:27 actually.
It was somewhat dark on the medlab stairs as Paige made her way down them. There was a light switch she could hit she supposed, but it was early and people were sleeping. Not to mention she already knew these stairs better than most. Paige held a travel mug in one hand, her other gently sliding down the banister before resting at her side when the stairs were done. She'd chosen to wear several pairs of socks, thick and woolen and probably her brothers, as opposed to shoes, and therefore made no sound when she entered the hall towards Angelo's area.
There was a clock on the far wall, but Jono had actually learned to ignore it. He wasn't really sure why he was keeping this vigil over Angelo, because clearly it wasn't his business. But that didn't change the fact that there he was - he sighed and glanced at the clock - at 4:27 in the morning. He let his head fall back against the wall and continued fiddling with the frayed cuff of his obligatory Metallica shirt.
It was difficult to spot Jono at first, all clothed in black and the white of his face blending in somewhat with the walls. It didn't really help that Paige was tired, either. So much for three nights in a row. When she did find him she smiled a little bit, though, if only for a breath, before taking a sip of her tea. "I got here early for my shift."
Jono looked up, not seeming really surprised to see her there. He took notice of the dark smudges under her eyes, and the weary lines of her body. "Too early," he said matter-of-factly. "What's the point if you fall from exhaustion and end up needing to be doctored as well?"
"I couldn't sleep, Jono." She slid down the wall, landing with a solid thump. So much for graceful, too. Pulling her knees up she sighed, wrapping her hands around her mug to keep warm. "Besides, I slept two whole nights in a row. That's a record."
"You worry too much," Jono stated, eyes staring somewhere into the shadows that gathered in the corners. His legs were stretched out in front of him. "Xavier should invest in some comfortable chairs or beds to bring in here."
"Perhaps you don't worry enough," Paige shot back. She took another drink of her tea, pushing the shivers back again. It was much too cold down here all the time for her tastes, but at least it kept her awake. "I think they're trying to persuade us that we're in the way down here. Perhaps a waiting room would be better."
"I'm here now, aren't I?" he shrugged, curling his hands inside his sleeves. "That's all the worry you'll get out of me." He closed his eyes, enjoying how Paige's mind was like a tiny beacon fire inside his. The complete alienation from people he'd felt during the attack had been more disturbing than he liked to admit. "They could at least provide blankets for people who come here, determined to be cold."
Paige stared at a dot on the otherwise perfect wall. Maybe it was a dot on her eye, who knew. "Of course," she replied with a soft tone. "Of course." She was very content to stare straight ahead it seemed. Closing her eyes might involve her falling asleep down here again and appealing as that sounded she liked herself not sick. "Yes, how rude of them. Using the blankets for the patients."
The silence stretched for a good while - Jono opened his eyes and checked the clock again, almost against his will. Then he started to stand up. 4:43 am. "Well, it's your shift." He swept his hair out of his eyes, and took a few steps towards the stairs. "I'll get you a blanket or something," he added softly.
Paige blinked and looked up at him with a soft sort of smile. She felt very small at the moment. "Thank you."
Jono vanished up the stairs, taking his time in touring the mansion to pick up a blanket, a pillow and a sandwich from the kitchen. He liked the dark hallways, and the rectangles of pale light that fell through the frosted windows. It was a bit after 5 am when he got back. "Still awake?" he quested towards Paige, even though he saw her eyes were open.
"Mm?" Paige's smile had faded in the time he'd been away but it lit up again as she focused on his face. "Oh. Yes, still awake." She had chosen to miss the obvious rhetoric in the question. Her mug had been set beside her, hands inside the other arms sleeves which then looped around her legs.
"Here," he offered the pillow first, then the blanket, and when Paige was tucked in warmly, he gave her the sandwich. "Eat," he dropped to sit in front of her as if he didn't trust her to eat if left to her own devices.
"I love how you seem to think that I can't find food without you," Paige said fondly. She poked at the sandwich a moment, eventually ripping off a piece of crust to put in her mouth. "Besides, it's five in the morning. Who eats at five in the morning?"
"You sometimes conveniently forget to find some for yourself," he replied, watching her idly. He sat cross-legged, elbows resting on his knees. "And if you think this is a proper time to be up, then it's also a proper time to eat."
Paige rolled her eyes but it was with a good nature and tore off another piece of sandwich. "Well. Thank you, then. Your culinary skills, ranging from morning sandwiches to evening sandwiches, are astounding."
"It's astounding if they're eatable," Jono pointed out. "I've forgotten what things taste like, so I'm playing it all by ear."
"Well, you're welcome to go playing in my head if you'd like to remember," she said without thinking. There was a pause and she looked up at him, a little startled. "I mean, that part of the brain. Not that you would... If you want I mean. Nevermind." She put another piece of sandwich in her mouth before she could continue.
Jono looked almost as startled as she did, then he let his gaze drop to the floor between them. "No, better not even try. Who knows how I'd manage to fuck that up."
Paige shrugged, suddenly very interested in her remaining sandwich. "I trust you. Besides, you can already pick up on things, this is not much different."
For a moment Jono wanted to incredulously demand how she could still trust him, but he thought better of it. "Maybe after I finish one more class of Psionics," he said lamely.
"Tease." Paige threw a piece of her crust at him, laughing quietly. She rubbed her hands together, blowing on them for warmth, but couldn't hide the grin behind them.
"You don't want an untrained telepath in your head," Jono arched his eyebrows loftily, brushing bread crumbs off his shirt. Really, Metallica and bread did not mix.
Paige gave him an unaffected look. "All right. Just have to find another way to do it then." She set the plate next to her mug and pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders. She always underestimated how very cold it was down here.
"Maybe it'll be better to forget, anyway," he muttered, tugging at his sleeves and frowning at the floor. "So I don't keep missing something I can't have."
"Hey." Paige stretched out one leg to tap him with a well socked foot offering a light smile. "My lovely angst king, I was supposed to be borrowing your crown for a bit. How'd you steal it back again?"
"Because you're an impostor, and I'm the Fucking Prince of Darkness." Jono caught her foot and tickled it. "The crown is mine by right."
Paige yelped - she was ticklish even through several layers of socks - and attempted to yank her foot away to not much avail. "Perhaps I am here to usurp your throne, Majesty. By the way, remind me to never give you names that involve cursing. You always cling to those ones."
After a few more times of Paige trying to get her foot back Jono had mercy on her and let go. He folded his hands in his lap again, tilting his head amusedly. "Better than 'lovely angst king'. It's too David Bowie for me."
"I liked lovely angst king. Not to mention the very little that I know about David Bowie involves abnormally tight pants and guitars. Always helpful." Paige pulled her leg close to her, knees up again, and rubbed her shin to try and get some warmth back into it.
"So you've seen Labyrinth? There's really no possibility of actually following the plot when Bowie's trousers are on screen." Jono shook his head a little, realizing he'd completely forgotten about not watching the clock and had to steal a look at it just for that. 5:34 am. "That or Velvet Goldmine."
"No and no. I come from middle of no where Kentucky, remember? Clarice was just talking about it earlier, that's all." Paige stifled a yawn, going slightly pink in embarassment. "I'll keep in mind to concentrate extra hard on the plot when Mr Bowie appears if I ever do, though, thanks." She wasn't going to think too hard on that right now.
"You're really the kind of girl mothers love to meet." The thought floated out of Jono's mind before he fully noticed. Then he resigned himself to continuing it. "I mean, sweet and innocent, not even spoiled by the Goblin King's lecherous trousers."
Paige snorted, giving him a wry look. "Yes, and I go to church every Sunday, pick flowers in the afternoons, save bunny rabbits from hunters and bake cookies in my spare time. I'm just everyone's favourite girl next door. The line up for people who would like to underestimate me starts down the block, darlin." She shook her head and tried a smile instead. "Sorry, I'm sure you meant that as something of a compliment."
"I did, but thanks for pointing out I shouldn't even try to be nice to people," he pressed his hands against he floor, leaning back on them. "I've seen your metal husk, I've no desire to underestimate you."
"Hard to tell with you sometimes, Jonothan. From you, sweet and innocent could be an insult." She gave up on this across the room nonsense, and turned around, pushing her legs out against the wall to sit almost next to him. "So you liked the metal husk, huh?"
"I'll just go back to calling you sunshine then," he gave Paige a smiling look as she moved to sit next to him "The metal husk was very," he paused, "inspiring."
"I'd like that." Paige smiled back at him, readjusting her blanket around her shoulders and placing the pillow in his lap. "Inspiring of what exactly, Mr. Starsmore?"
"Well, sunshine," Jono fluffed the pillow absently, wondering what Paige was up to. "Sex."
Any master plan on Paige's part was thwarted right about then. "/What/?" She clapped a hand over her mouth and tried again, laughing as quietly as she could. "I mean... pardon me?"
"I hope I didn't just put you off of the metal husk completely," he continued rather blithely, his talents at ignoring now coming in handy as he proceeded to pay no heed to Paige's laughter.
"Oh, no not at all," she said and in a smooth movement rolled over and onto his lap, a knee on either side. "You've put me somewhat on it I'd say. Well, on you actually, but you get the idea." Her laugh had turned into a bold grin, mostly as she imagined Jono was either very upset or grateful at the pillow she had given him moments before.
Jono was indeed both upset and grateful at the pillow. His hands smoothed up her thighs, settling high on them. "If this was all I had to do to get you to stop worrying, I would've done it earlier." He stared straight into Paige's eyes, trying to get a hold of the thoughts that fluttered just behind them.
Paige found her arms looped easily around his neck, fingers playing at the back of his hair. "Guess you'll just have to remember for next time, won't you? Although, more telling me I remind you of sex and less assuming that I am not reminded of sex when I think of you would be appreciated."
After a second of dropping his gaze, Jono jerked it back up, realizing it hadn't been a really safe location for him to look at right now. "I'll try to keep it in mind," he said, a little stifled by his own thoughts as well as the ones that crowded his mind from Paige's direction.
Paige dropped the look and just smiled at him, letting her hands fall to her sides. "Sorry. Didn't mean to startle you this badly. Obviously I need to go husk before I try anything like this again." A blush had risen to her cheeks and she had to think very hard on not wringing her hands.
"No, really, I don't mind." Jono's hands inched up to her hips, pulling her steadily closer. "I was just a little.. unprepared." He raised one eyebrow at her, regarding her blush. "There you go being innocent again."
"Well, Sarah's started a corruption class, but I don't think I'm invited," she said, pouting just a little. "You two sure have a way of making a girl feel unwanted." She ducked her head a little, using the innocence to her advantage, but smiling a bit and certainly not moving away.
"You'll have to start with Labyrinth," he leaned his forehead against hers. "That's all the corruption you're allowed to handle right now. I don't really fancy the idea of Angelo trying to beat me into a pulp if I corrupt his precious Paige."
Paige sighed dramatically, threading her fingers through his belt loops. "I guess. Just remember, much as you hate to, I'm yours too. Though, probably minus the precious." His eyes held much more amber this close up.
"And that's the heart of the problem, isn't it?" Jono blinked and looked aside for a brief moment. "That you refuse to choose between us."
Everything in Paige that had gone slack tensed instantly. There was no anger there, just shock, and the feeling that she should put her hand to her cheek. "Yes. Of course. Of course it is. Thanks for reminding me, /heart/." She drew her hands away from him and made to get up.
In response Jono's hands fell from her sides. He wasn't going to hold her down if she didn't want to stay. "Well, it is, isn't it? You're never going to do it."
"The answer is neither, don't you get that? It's neither! Except that's not possible because I don't think I could handle not having both of you in my life. So it's both of you. But that's not possible either, so it's just this giant, never ending circle!" She sighed and went slack again, falling to his shoulder. "Could we just shut up for a little while? I really hate being angry with you."
It took a moment's hesitation, but Jono wrapped his arms around her, leaning his cheek against her shoulder. "Yeah," was all he said, eyes stealing up to see the clock. 6:01 am. The time had felt a lot longer, but that's subjectivity for you.
