Amanda drops by Ororo's office for a chat about something that's been bothering her...

Amanda hadn't been to the mansion since her return from London, but life had to return to normal sometime. And she had something of a pressing question for one of the residents. With the fallout from Zemo's plots beginning to settle, she figured it was probably a good time. Knocking on the door that housed Ororo's office, she glanced around almost furtively. A tendency to relive memories in surround sound was a little uncomfortable in a place where you had such a conflicted experience.

"Please come in." Ororo had been in the middle of watering some of the plants in her office - no watering can needed, of course, and turned to see Amanda enter. She greeted the young woman with a smile, dissipating the mini-raincloud with a wave of her hand and turning to face her properly. "Amanda, what a nice surprise. It is good to see you."

"Hey, 'Ro," the Brit replied, smiling back. She was still a bit subdued and a little thin about the face, but glad to see the other woman. "Thought I'd drop by and say hi. You got a minute for a chat?"

"Of course. Please sit down. Is there anything you would like? Tea? Coffee?"

"Tea, thanks." Amanda sat in one of the easy chairs, making herself comfortable as she watched Ororo go about preparations. "We haven't seen you by the brownstone so much," she remarked. "Tho' I s'pose with Remy gone there's not so much reason for you to be around."

"I admit my trips to the city become far fewer in number when Remy is away," Ororo agreed. "I do not find it a very peaceful place to be, especially with spring here and so much work to be done in the gardens."

"Spring is springing and all the rest of it. I should drag Sofia with me next time I drop by. You two can get your plant thing happening." Amanda found herself chewing on her thumbnail and made herself lower her hand. "'Bout Remy having to leave... I know it was something to do with the Morlocks, but not the whole story. Do you mind telling me? It'd help, knowing." She gave Ororo an almost pleading look. "Back when I was... lost, in London, Remy was one of the people that brought me back and now he's gone, it's a bit like I'm missing a piece of myself."

With a sympathetic expression Ororo sat down, passing Amanda a cup and saucer. "I will try my best to explain what happened. I believe it began with some acts of vigilante vandalism and destruction that caught the eye of Remy and some of your coworkers at the brownstone. It cumulated in the bombing of a subway station... a group calling themselves 'Gene Nation' took the credit for it. Sarah was sent to investigate, and I believe that what she found led her to the tunnels and the mutants that lived there."

Amanda nodded, taking the tea. The cup rattled a little in the saucer from the faint tremor of her hands and she frowned, focussing until it stopped. "Sarah mentioned she'd found Morlocks again. These Gene Nation people had something to do with them?"

"They were made up of mutants - some of them Morlocks," Ororo confirmed. "They were being led by a man who was also with the Morlocks, albeit more violent and hateful than most of the Morlocks were." The silver-haired woman pursed her lips, remembering Berserker and his angry diatribe against the 'surface-dwellers'. "While investigating Gene Nation, Sarah was discovered and captured... they believed she was a traitor, and wished to punish her for it."

There was a blink. "Sarah? A traitor to the Morlocks? Hell, this is the girl that lived with the dead bodies of them after the Massacre for a couple of years and would've quite happily gutted Remy for it a couple of years ago." She shook her head. "The more things change, I suppose."

"Unfortunately, I do not think they were interested in being fair or understanding. Sarah would have been in danger even without their actions, however... it seems that the government was planning another raid on the tunnels, much like the original one." Ororo sipped her tea carefully.

Amanda went still, hands wrapped around the teacup tightening. "Another Massacre?" she asked quietly. Behind her eyes, things were slotting into place. Morlocks, another Massacre, Remy having to leave New York...

"Yes. And he forestalled it, but only by revealing himself to the man responsible for it. It was a very risky move. And now that he has done so, it is best that he stay out of the country for a while. Safer."

"Langstrom." It all made sense now. "After that business at Alcatraz, Langstrom thought he was dead and he basically sacrificed that to save the Morlocks from another Massacre." Amanda closed her eyes briefly. "Fuck. I can't even be cranky at him for not being here." It was said with a trace of her old, wry humour. "Does Sarah know? What he did for them? And what's happened to the Morlocks now?"

"I do not know how much Sarah knows - she has been avoiding much contact since it happened." She hadn't even been there to talk when Ororo had gone to finally check on her in the infirmary. "The Morlocks..." Ororo hesitated, not wanting to reveal information that would make Sarah more uncomfortable with the situation. "Some of them chose to stay in the tunnels. Others have come to the surface, and wish to try integrating into a life up here. I am doing what I can to help them, for now."

Amanda caught the hesitation and nodded. "Fair enough," she replied, knowing not to push. She leaned back in her chair, shoulders slumping a little. "'S just like Remy. Still trying to pay for what Gambit did."

"He saved a good many people that day. Whether that will ease his conscience, I don't know."

"Probably not." Another brief, wry smile, somehow brittle-looking. "Fuck, with Langstrom after him, he's going to have to be so bloody careful..." She sipped at her tea again, glancing back to Ororo. "If I can help at all with you two meeting up when you can, let me know, yeah? I'm getting good at the sneaky spy travel."

"Thank you. I hope with summer coming that I will be able to go to him; I am not sure how long it will be for, but he will return, Amanda." The look Ororo gave her was reassuring. "And you will see him soon, I am sure of it."

"I think I'll be sticking close to home for a while," she replied, with a small shrug. "At least until we work out what it was with my powers that had me getting stuck in London and letting loose those city spirit things. But he'll be back, yeah. Remy's like a cat; once you feed it, you never get rid of it."
