A Random and Awkward Encounter
May. 31st, 2008 02:26 pmWho: Bishop and Crystal
What: Meeting Briefly
When: Memorial Day, 2008. (Backdated and Fixed)
Where: The Mansion Grounds
Even in a world where mutants were known to exist, in most places the sight of someone soaring through the air would be a surprising, unexpected, and perhaps unwelcome sight. Here, on the Xavier's campus, the sight was a common one, at least to those who looked up whenever any one of the multiple mansion residents gifted with flight chose to take to the sky. Her workout outfit may have changed a bit over the years, but Crystal's current clothing very closely resembled the one she had been wearing during her first week at the school. The school year was almost over, students had that end-of-the-year-eager-for-summer-vacation excitement about them, and above the trees all was calm. Crystal descended towards the ground, straightening and standing in mid-air as she neared the earth, then set both feet down on the ground.
Bishop was just stepping out of the mansion after his weekly training session with Scott. He was in a tank top, shorts, and had a towel around his neck for the sweat; though he was starting to dry up. "I heard that this was the only place on Earth where beautiful women actually did fall from the sky. I'm glad it doesn't disappoint." He said it with a smile and good-natured, he found that a memorable first statement and a casual compliment usually made a good impression on others. He had plenty of contacts with law enforcement in the area, it was time to start building them in the mutant community as well.
There were many inaccuracies in the statement the man had just given - the statement appearing to be more of a cheesy pick-up line than an actual factual statement, of course. Crystal recognized the man standing nearby as the newest publicized person to work at Snow Valley, the man who had introduced himself on the journals by not actually introducing himself at all. And surely if he worked on 'relations between mutants and law enforcement' he was no stranger to mutants and would of course know that the Xavier's campus was not the only place in the world where beautiful women fell from the sky. "Aside from minor incidents when I was but a young child learning control of my ability to move in the air, I have fallen from the sky only once," Crystal told Bishop with a hint of a smile. "Today was not that day. I am Princess Crystal Lia Amaquelin." She offered a curtsy, just as she had during her early days at the mansion.
People were still exceptionally literal? Bishop wasn't really prepared for that but he took it in stride. Maybe she was the Princess of some very pretentious country. He laughed a bit at the awkwardness of the whole greeting "I'm Bishop." He offered his hand instead of returning some sort of bow. "It's nice to meet you." He didn't know who this was but generally people who were well off like she must be didn't care for people 'like him.' He was hopeful, however; being a mutant tended to change perceptions for most.
Crystal shook the offered hand. Bishop? The one-name introduction, not sounding like a first name, reminded her of Forge's first spoken introduction to her years ago in the mansion's garage. "Are you outside for a continuation for a workout or have you just finished one?" she asked.
“Just finished, actually.” Bishop ran his towel over his head, getting rid of the last of the sweat. “What about yourself? Plans for the day?” He didn't really know what to say on this end. She didn't seem like the type to randomly go out to a bar and he wasn't sure that if they did have a conversation there would be anything to talk about.
"I am having a mostly relaxing day, though I do plan on continuing to work on completing final classes and papers, both the ones I need to take and the ones I will be giving to the students here," Crystal said. To Crystal, a workout in the sky was relaxing. While it wasn't true, as some people had wondered, that she never broke a sweat, as a self-termed living air conditioner she was very good at being able to keep herself cool.
“I hope that goes well for you.” Which was sincere, though in truth Bishop didn't really have much to say unless engaged, both in general and specifically with Crystal. People would imagine he'd be better at getting to know people but when light-hearted conversation failed him and things moved to small talk he was horrible.
As she'd told Forge months earlier, Crystal could do fairly well at small-talk, but it wasn't real. There were things you said to people to be polite, to keep people talking, but she didn't consider it to be an actual conversation. As Crystal knew all too well, first impressions counted. While she was aware that this was more than likely Bishop's first impression on her and it was perhaps not the best one, she didn't feel that she should ask questions which were really none of her business, even if she did wonder them. Besides, she had left openings in her statements for the continuation of a conversation, even if the man had not chosen to use them. It would appear that Bishop was not interested in attempting a conversation with her, and this was fine with Crystal.
The young woman offered a nod and a smile. "Thank you. I hope you, too, have a good day."
