Sam comes in to see Scott first thing in the morning on the day he returns.

Samuel Guthrie was back, he flew in during the evening, having spent one last day making sure everything was perfect with the rest of his family in Kentucky. After a night of unpacking, light napping, and being exceedingly quiet so he didn't wake Kurt (or announce his return prematurely) Sam made his way to Scott's office as early as he expected him to be in. He was being secret agent about his arrival because he wanted to be able to tell Paige and Jay he was back in person, not over the phone or (worse yet) through the grape vine. He knocked on the closed door as lightly as possible, just in case Scott was busy or not in; from there he waited patiently, his hands in his pockets.

"Come in," Scott's voice came, sounding distracted. When the door opened, he looked up abruptly from where he appeared to be emptying one of his filing cabinets - and gaped momentarily at Sam, before he
grinned, genuinely glad but still, a little surprised. "Good God. Look what wandered back in.”

Sam shot a grin right back, honestly good to be at what he considered his second home. "How are things with you, Sir?" He offered his hand for a shake before politely taking a seat across from Scott's desk; he didn't want to interrupt too much, even though the surprise probably didn't help that.

Scott paused for a moment, thinking about just how to answer that. "Well... we've had better weeks, but also worse," he said wryly. "We're not actively in crisis right now? Sometimes that's about as
much as we can ask for...”

“I don't suppose that anything else should be asked for. I've been spending a lot of time just learning how to be happy with what I have, thanking God for it, and enjoying even the bad things.” Sam had a smile on his face constantly, seeing Scott let him know he really was back. “I wanted to make sure I check in and let you know I'm here and staying for a while, God willing.”

“Well, we can certainly use you. We've got people away, and people not in the right mindset or condition to be going into the field right now - not to mention, your replacement Flight instructor has finally fled screaming." Scott snorted, then eyed the half-empty file cabinet for a moment before he looked back at Sam. "Charles is taking over the headmaster's job again - we're looking at less enrollment next year, he's moving towards more of a temporary-stay model for kids who only
need a little powers training."

Sam listened and nodded “I'm ready and willing to do whatever the school needs. Everything with my family's set and I've been making sure to take some time for myself to keep in top shape... and sounds like I came back right in time, if that flight instructors gone and as many people are falling from the roof as ever things could have been serious.” Things sounded a bit stressful, jokes usually helped.

"We've got new trainees since you left. The really interesting newbies are Monet. And my brother." Scott laughed a bit helplessly, rubbing at his jaw as he straightened in his chair. "I might get you to work with Alex a little, actually. The two of you have similar temperaments, and I don't want to come off too much like I'm specifically riding his ass."

“That's good by me. I'm just happy to get back into helping out and pulling my own weight.” Sam liked the idea of Alex getting involved, even if it did affect Scott like it did. “I'll try and take a moment to get to know everyone again whenever they're free and I've done my family time.”

Scott crossed his arms on his desk, leaning forward slightly. "You've been out of training for a while," he said idly, "although I know you well enough to know you've probably kept up the basics while you were gone...”

“I had a lot of room on the farm and I did as much as I could, though there weren't any groups to train with.” Sam nodded in some sort of agreement, he probably was a little out of practice, at very least with groups.

"So maybe a refresher course for you, first and foremost? I'd like to get you back on active duty as soon as you feel you're ready." And that was one of those very loaded comments, Scott thought amusedly.
Sam would probably see right through it, but that didn't mean he didn't want to see his reaction anyway.

“I've stayed ready but if you need to reassess my skills then that's fine.” He knew Scott liked to do those kinds of jokes and Sam was good about rolling with them, even making it a little bit of a personal challenge but just between friends.

"I've not actually gotten any less anal-retentive since you went home, Sam."

“I'm not sure it's possible for you to, Sir.” Sam shot back with a friendly smile.

"Well, that's disappointing. I always thought we were supposed to mellow with age," Scott said, making a very suspiciously put-on sort of face, and then eyed Sam. "No," he said speculatively, "not nearly
enough gray hair. You've clearly been taking it far too easy back home. We'll fix that."

“If you think farm living is easy then you've never been on one.” Sam smiled and stood, people had a way of signaling the ending of their conversations and Sam knew how Scott did his. He imagined that after he left there would be a fight with the file cabinet. “But I look forward to it, either way.”

"You say that now. Let me know if you need any help getting settled back in," Scott said, peering at the filing cabinet. "And whether you might be willing to take a few years' worth of student disciplinary
reports up to ten thousand feet over the Atlantic and drop them...”

“Having been a student here I'd have to take them somewhere exotic, like a volcano.” He smiled back to Scott on his way out. “Let me know if I need to find an active one.”

"not to mention, your replacement Flight instructor has finally fled screaming."

Crystal says proper ladies (and princesses) do not scream and flee. They give notice, wait until the term is over, then quietly teleport away.

Then they may scream. ;)
