Answering Adrienne's offer on the journals, Inez shows up for her first job interview ever.

Resting back in her chair, Adrienne casually surveyed her office and toyed with her lighter as she waited for Inez to arrive, hoping she didn't seem as nervous as she felt. She'd never conducted an interview for a temporary assistant before. Ivie had been with her since she'd started the business. Adrienne didn't even remember anymore where Ivie had come from. "Should've just called a temp agency," she muttered to herself, flipping her lighter over the backs of her gloved fingers. "At least then I could sue if they were incompetent; it wouldn't be left to my own judgment."

Inez only caught the last bit as she knocked and stuck her head in the door. "Um, Mrs. Frost? Hi?" She waved briefly, then stepped inside. She figured that for a job interview, she was supposed to dress nicely, so she'd managed to borrow a good blouse and slacks in her size, since the only other remotely fancy clothing she owned was a prom dress. Looking down, she realized that she probably should have changed out of her boots, though.

"Come on in, Inez," Adrienne said quickly, smiling. She gestured to a chair she'd pulled up across from her desk. "Have a seat. You look very nice. Very professional." Another smile. Maybe this wasn't so hard after all. "So tell me something. Why do you want to work for me?"

Inez blinked. She hadn't expected that direct of a question. "Well," she began. "I need a job, because I really don't want to be one of those people living off the Professor's allowance, and I don't exactly have a magic trust fund like some people. And I think I can do pretty good at it? I mean, I'm organized and stuff." She tried to give a smile, but the nervousness was obvious.

Adrienne nodded, taking Inez's nervousness into account and smiling benignly to reassure the young woman. Really, Inez shouldn't have been nervous. The psychometrist could relate to not wanting to live off an allowance, wanting to make her own money. Resenting the trust fund lot. "Well, you're not stupid, I know that much," Adrienne replied neutrally. "Why do you want this particular job, if I may ask?"

The young girl thought about it for a moment before deciding that honesty was the best policy. "Because I'm tired of people looking at me like I'm some hick girl from the ass end of nowhere, and you're all about business and fashion and culture stuff and I want to learn that," she blurted out all at once.

What a wonderful answer! Raising an eyebrow, Adrienne barely held back from cackling with glee. She played with her lighter, reining in her emotions, reminding herself that just because Inez's pride and ambition reminded her of herself, she shouldn't necessarily be encouraging the young woman. Pride and ambition hadn't always led her down particularly shining paths, after all. "I appreciate your thinking that working for me is a way for you to better yourself or impress people," she replied after a time, mirroring Inez's honesty, "but this arrangement wouldn't be a one-way street. I'm hiring someone to do grunt work, not a protegé. And I believe they call it grunt work for a reason. Are you sure you're prepared for the tasks I outlined on the journals? Getting coffee, fetching and carrying, yelling at people?"

Inez folded her hands in her lap and looked directly at Adrienne. "Mrs. Frost, three days a week I work out with Mr. Marko and believe me, I think he used to be a drill sergeant or something. As long as you don't mind me asking questions about how to do things right, I'll do the job as best I can." She gave a million-watt smile and a small laugh. "And I certainly don't mind yelling at folks."

"It's Ms., Inez. Not Mrs.," Adrienne corrected with a shake of her head. She pocketed her lighter. "I don't mind answering questions as long as I don't have to answer the same one twice," she informed the girl gravely. She didn't expect that she'd have to- she knew from class that Inez was pretty quick on the uptake. "Do you have any questions for me about the job?"

Thinking for a moment, Inez nodded once. "When do you want me to start?"
