Angel tries to get a radio signal, Yvette is on watch.
The New Mutants group had lucked out. When they’d reached the two story firehouse, the bottom doors had looked like someone had tried to break in but had gotten distracted. Angel had checked out the upper floors but when she’d found no one, they’d broken in through the back. She’d left the others upstairs while she’d taken Catseye with her – she knew the rough layout and where they would keep certain things but she wasn’t about to do anything by herself.
Now they had all the ways to get upstairs barred and were taking turns sleeping and keeping watch. Angel knelt next to a window and poked through the pile of stuff they’d taken; she kept the biggest treasure on her lap, though.
Radios.
Not that she’d heard anything back yet but they were short frequency ones and she could only hope that someone was close enough to hear her emergency calls.
There was movement in the darkness and a gleam of blue light as Yvette shifted from where she'd been keeping watch near another window. Things had gotten marginally quieter, but none of them really wanted to relax their guard, so they'd established a watch rotation. "Anything?" she asked quietly, so as not to wake the others.
“No,” Angel sighed, leaning her head back against the wall. “They’re not in range which could mean a couple of things.” They could have evacuated yesterday while there was still time or…she blinked back hot tears before they could fall. No. They were good men and women who had treated her nicely when Paul had taken her on a tour. They were fine. “But I’ll keep trying. You doin’ okay?” Her hand went from the radio to her chest where under her clothes hung one of the badges she’d found in the captain’s office.
It was the wrong station but she was almost one of them too. She didn’t think they would have minded; not when it gave her so much comfort.
"I want to go home." For a moment, Yvette's eyes dimmed - if she'd been less hard, her eyes might have teared up. "But I will be okay. The X-Men will be saving us." Although at what cost, Yvette wasn't sure. She had no illusions of how dangerous it was out there.
If the X-Men could even find them in this mess. “We’ll get to Silver,” Angel said quietly as she scrubbed at her face. She felt filthy, though it hadn’t been all that long since she’d last had a shower. “I just really hope someone’s there. It makes sense that they would go there, right?”
Yvette nodded. "It is the place that is known, but it is not the, how you say? Landmark? And Mr. Mark has many friends who are being mutants who would not be with the bad people." Including the mysterious Snow Valley people, who were more than they appeared. "If we are careful, we can be making it, yes?"
“We’ll make it because right now…” Angel’s grip tightened on the walkie-talkie. “We don’t know where the X-Men are or where anyone else is. So, we’ve got each other and that’s it.” She reached over and carefully touched Yvette’s gloved hand. “We’ve all we’ve got but we’ll make it.”
"I wish I was understanding why this is happening," Yvette admitted. "This was to be our safe place. This sort of things is not to be happening here."
“I haven’t been on any runs with the guys yet,” came the soft reply, “but I’ve seen them go out and come back. Fires started by accident are numerous but there are plenty that are started on purpose, too. I thought that was bad, you know? They’d come back exhausted, sometimes even hurt, because someone was malicious. But this is just…” Angel fell silent, moving to hug her knees to her chest.
“I’m scared.”
"Everyone is scared." Now it was Yvette's turn to touch Angel on the shoulder, offering what comfort she could. A hug was too risky. "You should be getting some sleep. We will try the radio again in the morning, yes?"
“Again and again until we can get someone,” Angel confirmed, stifling a yawn. “I’ll go wake one of the other girls, maybe Cess, to do the next round. I think you’re on for another hour but remember to, you know, get someone to cover when you’re shift is done.” She edged to the corner of the window before standing up so she could shuffle her way back down to where the other New Mutants had crashed heavily.
They had blankets and real beds – it was a small comfort but they were taking all they could get.
