Meggan heads to the kitchen for a sandwich, and discovers Catseye is stuck in a very tiny box.
Someone had left an empty soda can box on the kitchen floor. It must have been on its way to the recycling box because someone had broken the two ends open in an attempt to fold it up, but it hadn't been flattened all the way. In cat shape, Catseye took a running start and pounced, landing halfway in the box and skidding into several aluminum cans that had been placed next to the box. She wasn't a small cat, however, and found that when the box was around her middle, she couldn't get it off. Uh oh. Trying to think, the cat froze in a crouched position, trying to figure out how to get out. When she heard footsteps approaching, she bristled, hoping that maybe if she stayed completely still the person coming in wouldn't notice a purple cat in a soda can box on the floor.
Meggan entered the kitchen, ready to make herself a sandwich. She wanted to eat something before attempting any levitating, just in case that made a difference. As she neared the refrigerator door, she heard a muffled thump, and paused. After listening for a moment, and vaguely thinking she had heard something else, she walked to the middle of the kitchen, before finally asking, “Is anyone else in here?” For all she knew, it might be someone that had accidentally (or purposefully?) turned invisible. Or a pet had come in, or maybe even a rodent of some sort.
Little Fur! Happy that it was a friend, Catseye decided to ask for help. "Mrrrrrrt!" she called out pitifully, lashing her tail irritably. If she could have figured out how to turn around so she could face Meggan, she would have, but there was a box stuck around her middle, and she didn't know what to do.
Meggan crouched down, looked around the corner of the table. “Catseye? Oh, you poor girl.” She struggled not to laugh, but she couldn’t help the small smile at the cuteness of it. She lightly tapped the box, so Catseye would know how near she was, and not end up being spooked. “Don’t move, I’ll get you out of there in just a moment.”
"Mrow!" She lashed her tail again, shifting a little to try to turn and see Meggan. Catseye wants out LittleFur! Helphelphelp! This box is not a good house for Catseye after all!
Meggan nodded wryly as she saw Catseye’s tail wave in agitation. “It’s too small in there, isn’t it?” She carefully tugged at the edges to get Catseye free—without accidentally tearing out any fur. A few more quick tugs, and it was almost off. Catseye would just need to wriggle for a few seconds, at the most, and she would be free. “See if you can scoot out your way out now.”
"Mrrrrrrrrrt!" Much too small! SillyBox looked bigger before Catseye got inside! Trusting Meggan not to tell her to scoot when she would crash into something, the cat shimmied out of the box quickly and was soon free. Grateful, she leapt into Meggan's lap and butted her affectionately with her head, licking with her rough tongue. "Mew!" Thank you LittleFur! She began purring affectionately, glaring at the evil box through narrowed eyes.
Meggan smiled as Catseye got out and into her lap. “That’s better, isn’t it?” Meggan scratched lightly behind Catseye’s ear after the headbutt, before laughing at the quick lick and purring. “I’ll throw away that box later. You won’t get stuck in there again.” She paused, before adding wryly, “I think you might want to stick to larger boxes from now on.”
Catseye batted at Meggan's arm with a clawless paw for the teasing before jumping out of her lap and stalking off to plant herself in front of the fridge, washing an ear with her paw with as much dignity as she could muster. "Mrrt?" Will LittleFur make Pastrami Sandwiches?
Meggan crossed her arms and grinned at where Catseye had placed herself. There was no possible way to make a sandwich without getting in there, so she’d happily share the meal.
Opening the fridge and glancing down at Catseye, she continued as she looked around at what was available. “I guess you want to split a Reuben sandwich...or a Pastrami sandwich...or we could go for the simpler grilled chicken sandwich.” She could list them until she got either a meowed response or a wave of a paw. Some sort of sign in the affirmative.
Catseye let out a noise at the mention of pastrami, flicking her tail up and down like a nod. To help, she jumped up onto the counter and opened the breadbox with her tail, pulling out a plastic-wrapped loaf. Catseye will help! "Mrrt!"
Meggan nodded at the sound. “Right. Pastrami it is, then.” She grabbed the pastrami and Swiss cheese, along with a teeny bit of lettuce, before turning back to Catseye with a question. “We seem to have enough for two—want one all to yourself? Just a big hunk of pastrami, and nothing else on it?” She turned to see Catseye grabbing the bread. “That’s exactly what I needed next. Thank you, Catseye.” She gave her another scratch behind the ear with one hand as she took the loaf of bread.
The cat thought it was time to have an actual conversation and help with the pastramisandwichmaking, so she shifted on the counter and dangled human legs over the edge. "LittleFur is welcome." She grabbed a piece of lettuce and chewed on it. "Catseye will have lettuce too because it is good for Catseye." Stretching out, she smiled at Meggan. "Can Catseye do more to help?"
Meggan only had to think for a second, before nodding. “Hmm…maybe grab some of the milder mustard. I think I forgot that when I was grabbing the rest out of the fridge. It’s probably near the back…behind the milk.” As she spoke, she got a knife from the drawer so that she could begin to slice some of the pastrami for each sandwich. She placed half the lettuce on her own part of the sandwich, and half on Catseye’s.
Obeying, Catseye found the mustard and presented it to Meggan. "How come LittleFur is in the kitchen and it is not mealtime?" she asked curiously. "LittleFur was just hungry for a snack?"
Meggan nodded, taking the bottle of mustard, and beginning to spread it on her own sandwich. “Hungry, plus there’s another reason. You saw my levitating at the Halloween party? I want to see if an extra snack can help me go a bit higher.” After a moment, she added ruefully with a slight grin, “I’m also hoping I won’t levitate while asleep again." She paused, before continuing.
"Or at least not so high up. Waking up four feet above your bed, suddenly falling, and bouncing off the bed can get old after a while. Not to mention dangerous.” At least she hadn’t floated sideways a few feet and landed on Catseye—or the lamp.
Catseye nodded emphatically. "Catseye did not like the flying-when-sleeping part. Scary. Catseye can bite LittleFur until LittleFur wakes up if LittleFur wants next time, but Catseye thinks maybe surprise will make LittleFur fall too." She put the top on her sandwich and bit into it anxiously. When she'd swallowed, she grinned at Meggan. "Once FloatingGirl figures out how to float better will FloatingGirl play Chase with Catseye? Floating Chase would be a fun game!"
“At least it’s just above the bed so far. Sleep floating and going out the window would be even more of a surprise than you biting me awake. More of a fall that way, too.” Meggan took a bite of her own sandwich—just the right amount of mustard. Delicious. Once she had swallowed that large bite, Meggan could only laugh at Catseye’s last comment. “Yes, you can chase me around the mansion when I get better at floating.” That ought to be fun.
"Catseye would never let FloatingGirl float out the window," she replied seriously, taking another bite of her sandwich and making a mental note to sleep in Meggan's bed or at least in their own room until she could be sure that flying out the window wasn't actually going to happen. She wondered if she could ask Kyle to put locks on the window so she could make sure Meggan wouldn't fly out in her sleep. "FloatingChase! Yayyayyay!" she giggled.
