Lil and Yvette had a run in by the fountain on Wednesday.
Following the cobblestone path back to the mansion, Lil's mind wandered farther than she allowed her feet to. So much had changed in her life over the last few days; the last few hours, even. A new, albeit temporary, job. Firearm lessons with Bishop scheduled for the following evening. Even whispers that she'd finally move out of the guest room and into a more permanent suite. Brushing back a long lock of blonde hair, the Canadian found she didn't mind any of it but was oddly looking forward to what might be in store for her; if a week could produce this then she should start to feel like the mansion was 'home' in no time.
Stopping by the fountain, she pulled a pack of cigarettes and her lighter from her jacket. Lil wasn't that far from the porch; she couldn't get in too much trouble for lighting up a little early. The blonde took one long inhale before plopping down on a bench and studying her surroundings. Yes, she could definitely get used to this.
From over on the other side of the rose bushes came a soft voice, singing something in a language not English. It was definitely female and definitely young, and every so often it was accompanied by an odd little 'snickt' sound, almost like shears. Then the owner of the voice appeared from around a stand of bushes - a short, red-skinned girl with long, solid-looking hair that hung in stiff loose curls past her shoulders. She was wearing a kind of black bodysuit that left her hands and feet bare, and she didn't seem to notice the snow underfoot as she wiggled long, claw-like toes. The strange noise also became clear as she reached up with her knife-like fingers and cut a branch from the bush in front of her, pruning it back neatly.
One eyebrow rose slightly as she watched the girl go about her task - chores, perhaps? - with a merry tune. "You're a little short to be Edward Scissorhands, aren't you?" Lil called over softly though her voice was completely without malice. She smiled softly at the girl and crossed her legs, likewise seeming unaffected by the weather as she wore no coat but made no move to approach her or call her closer.
Yvette squeaked slightly and jumped, blue eyes flaring bright. "Oh, I did not see you there!" she exclaimed, a little embarrassed at being caught singing by a stranger. "I am sorry, I did not mean to be interrupting you." Her English was marked by the accent she had been singing in. "Oh, you are the new person, yes? Miss... I mean, Lil, yes? I am Yvette."
"You aren't interrupting me, Yvette," Lil promised and with another long draw on her cigarette, put it out. Smoking among other smokers was fine but with others? Somehow, she always felt guilty. "I didn't mean to startle you. But yeah, I'm Lil. Nice to meet you face to face."
"Oh, it is being all right. I was wanting to be finishing the pruning while there is the light still." She held up her hand and wiggled her fingers. "Since I am having the tools already. You were calling me the Edward Scissorhands, yes? This is very much the same for me, except I cannot be cutting myself unless I am making the concentrating."
The blonde woman nodded her understanding. "I can only cut myself if I'm really trying, too," she replied. It took a lot of force for her to cause any injury to herself. "Having the tools handy - no pun intended - helps when you're trying to get the stuff done that you need to. You gonna be able to reach the tops alright?"
Yvette shook her head with a wry smile. "Not so much," she admitted. "Kyle is usually getting those, or I am fetching the ladder." When you were five feet tall and the bushes were as old as you were and thus rather robust, pruning was difficult. "I cannot be climbing the roses like the trees. I am too heavy and Miss Munroe would not like me to be breaking them."
Lil's own smile became more of a smirk as she rose to her full height of 6'4". "I'm not one for ladder but if feel like dragging one out and over here, maybe I could give you some help?" She was in a good mood and Yvette wasn't annoying her or causing problems as far as she could tell. "Can't have broken rose bushes."
"I do not have the spare cutters..." Yvette began, then remembered what the woman had said. "But, if you are careful not to let your clothings touch my skin or hair, perhaps you could be lifting me?" she suggested. "You were saying you could not be hurt by the sharp things, yes, but I would not like to be hurting your clothings."
"They're just clothes," Lil said with a shrug. "If I get a rip in them, no biggie. Only piece I really care about's back in my room so if you slip a little bit, it's okay." She didn't want the girl getting upset should something happen and her leather jacket was safe. Therefore, no problem. Tucking her cigarettes and lighter back into her pocket, she sauntered over to where Yvette stood. "Just let me know when you're ready for a boost, okay?"
It took a little bit of mental preparation to get used to the idea she was letting someone grab her, but Yvette nodded after a little while. "Okay, I am ready. I am heavier than I am looking because of my skin, so be careful with your lifting, yes?" She tried not to flinch as the tall woman reached for her.
"Don't worry about me, Sweetie," she answered then moved to stand behind the girl, laying her hands on her hips. Lil could tell she was nervous but it wasn't as if she was going to throw the girl over the bush or anything. Better to give her a bit of warning then. "On the count of three, okay? One. Two. Three." Bending at the knees - and with a little more effort than she honestly expected - the Amazon carefully lifted the girl so she could reach the top of the bushes.
There was another squeak, only a small one this time, and Yvette found herself being lifted up to where she would have been on an eye level with Kyle. "You are so high up!" she exclaimed, forgetting for a moment why she was up there in the first place.
"Yeah. Been that way since I was about your age, too. If you're scared, I can put you down," Lil reminded her, taking care to keep all clothing articles away from Yvette's skin. "All you gotta do is tell me and you'll be back on the ground."
"No, no, it is okay." Yvette recovered herself and began trimming the dead stems, trying to be as efficient as possible while keeping to what Miss Munroe had taught her. "Are you so tall because of your power, Miss... Lil?"
Lil shook her head, then remembered that Yvette couldn't see her. "Nope. Well, we don't really know but the doctors and all don't think so. I'm just tall; my father's tall and I remember my mother being tall, too, but not as tall as I am now."
"I was being born early, so I am always small, but my powers do not let me be growing very much now." Yvette sounded a little disgruntled - in comparison to her classmates, she felt like a small child sometimes, they were all so tall and good-looking and grown up. She cut a few more strands of rose bush and then gathered them up, oblivious to the thorns. "I am being finished, thank you," she told the tall woman.
"Alright then," Lil chuckled and slowly lowered Yvette back to the ground, careful not to let any of the girl's skin or hair catch on her own clothes. "There you go. Not so bad, was it?" She smiled at the younger female as she stuffed her hands in her pockets casually and continued to smile. "And don't sweat being short; sometimes it's better than being tall."
"I think they are both having the, how you say? Ups and downs?" Yvette replied with a shy smile and a certain spark to her eyes that said the pun wasn't completely unintentional.
Yvette's joke made her chuckle more so because it can from the sprite than its humor value. "You could definitely say that," the giantess returned, nodding. "And if you ever need help with some of the ups again, you let me know, alright?"
"I will," came the solemn reply. "Thank you very much, Miss... er, Lil."
"You're quite welcome, Yvette." Another smile and the blonde woman pulled her cigarettes from her pocket. "I'm gonna head back to the mansion but I'll see you around, okay? And if you need anything, just ask." Lil gave her another little wave then turned on her heel and departed, absently humming a tune reminiscent of the one Yvette had been singing.
