Harder. Better. Faster. Stronger.

Heaven wasn't supposed to be so dark, Dani thought before drifting out of consciousness again. She was never conscious to begin with, but she didn't know that. Her eyes moved rapidly below closed lids as images flashed through her subconscious.

She was a child of the Cheyenne, wild and free on the prairies. Clad in beaded buckskins she tracked the deer through the tall grasses, unafraid of the great beast. She knew she should wait for the hunters to catch up to her, but she was ready. She could do anything they could and she would prove that to them now. Dani had been tracking the buck for nearly a day now, to get to the perfect place to kill it. There would be a celebration in her honour for this.

Crouching, she pulled her bow off her back and strung it silently. Notching her arrow she let it loose then quickly followed with another. They both hit their target and the buck collapsed. The fear from the animal as the arrow pierced its flesh felt good and she quickly ran over to slit its throat. It must be a clean kill or the meat was no good. Her hands bloody, she looked up to see the other hunters approaching.

The thrill of the kill coursed through her veins and she stood, taller than the other Cheyenne. She had the kill. Not them. Grinning, she began to cut the meat of the buck to be portioned off and taken back to the camp. The consequences of her actions were not even considered. She was a warrior as good as any man and she would show them all.

Driving the old and battered pickup onto the reservation she drove almost blindly down the dirt roads, first to where she had grown up. The trailer was gone now, but some of the old tires and such were there. This was not home anymore. Turning, she left and drove for another few miles to her ex-husbands house. Stopping again, she withdrew a baseball bat.

Entering the house, she found her husband in the back. Tossing him the bat she gestured for him to come at her. To attack. Dani welcomed the fear he felt, pleased that she had caused it. She let it roll over her in waves, and a smile spread over her features as she looked down at him. Such a pathetic little man.

Just as she had expected, he came at her with the bat. Dani deflected easily, even in the small, cramped house. Whirling around, she knocked the bat out of his hands, toying with him. Cat and mouse was so much fun, especially when she was the cat. This was why Catseye enjoyed the games so much, she realized.

"That all you got?" she asked, approaching her ex-husband slowly as he backed up. When he could go no farther she leaned into him and kissed him softly. Gently. Breathing in his fear and basking in it. "Pity."

Gripping his throat, she tossed him to one side. Pathetic little man. Then she realized, her head was throbbing. He hadn't hit her. He had tried, but he hadn't succeeded. Why did her head hurt so much then?

Dani awoke in darkness, her head pounding in time with her heartbeat. A voice filtered through the blackness before her panic could rise. Pete Wisdom. She lay there, unmoving as he spoke. His voice was everything right now. As he outlined the plan she smiled a feral smile, content to wait until he said it was time.
