Monet and Kurt enjoy New Year's Eve out in town.

OOC: Backdated due to a serious case of hangover. Sorry, Kate.

Monet unscrewed the cap on the wine and poured herself a glass. "Want one, Kurt? Or there's y'know, water..." She smiled at him and took a sip of wine.

"Please, Monet", he said, amused, lifting his own glass for her to fill. "I have never been quite as much a saint as that."

"Good. I'd be worried if you were." Monet poured carefully and lifted her glass to toast. "To... oh, fuck it. I've got nothing, dude. To good wine."

"Good wine", Kurt echoed. "As good a toast as any. It has been too long, you know."

"Since you had a good night? Or just in general?"

"...both, I suppose. But mostly I meant since I had a night out with a friend."

"Dude." Monet shook her head. "That really sucks. It seems like we just don't get enough time to relax lately." She reached over and patted his hand.

Kurt smiled at her wryly, not pulling his hand away. "Only lately? I find it is often the case. A consequence of the lives we lead, perhaps."

"Hah! Yeah, but you've got to remember that I haven't been doing this as long as you. And I'm still not in the nifty black bondage gear version of the outfits you lot wear."

"You do not find the greys so nifty?" he asked with raised eyebrows, watching her over his wine. "Then I am sure you will go to extra effort to be promoted out of them."

"The colour is dreadful on me, baby." Monet gave an airy wave with one hand. "Honestly, though, Kurt? I'm still not fully better after Marius did a number on me last year. Working on it, though, so the greys are fine for now."

"That would be the effort", he agreed. "An incentive to get yourself fully better, if you should need one... but knowing you, not letting your brother beat you would be enough."

"More than enough." Monet forced a smile, carefully not thinking about the potential, probable permanence of some Marius' work. "How about something to eat?"

"Of course." He reached for the menu, scanning through it and allowing her forced smile to go unquestioned. This was meant to be a pleasant evening for both of them, after all. "What would you like?"

Thanks, Kurt. "How about something from the tapas menu? That guy over there has been having his own private happy time with the squid for the last few minutes." Monet pointed discreetly at him, sitting at a large table full of businessman-types.

Kurt chuckled, glancing briefly that way. "He does seem to be enjoying it, yes. Shall we take the recommendation?"

"Yeah..." Monet shrugged and looked at Kurt carefully. "How are you going dude? I mean, really?"

He didn't answer for a few moments, occupied in beckoning the waiter and ordering two plates of squid, but finally he met her eyes. "As well as may be. Our fearless leader barely speaks to me, but I have my family - and more of them around me than in a long time."

"He'll get over it eventually." Of that, at least, Monet was certain. That was what Scott did. "How is Meggan? I haven't really had a chance to talk to her or anything. She's ...a lot different to how she was back in the day." That was putting it mildly.

The mention of Meggan put an honest smile on his face - Kurt loved his little sisters, adopted or not, and it was plain to see. "In the best possible way, yes, she is. When I remember the day we found her... she has come so far."

"Yeah, I mean she can totally y'know, talk these days. She looks like an awesome kid."

"Looks and is. Though I feel I will have to be speaking with some of the boys, soon enough."

"Here?" Monet laughed. "Hon, she's got maybe three options and one's ugly and at least one of the others is a dickhead. You don't have that much to worry about unless we start a dual enrolment program out in town."

"There has been contact with the other schools in the area", he pointed out. "And there is our new boy, Julian - unless you meant him? Also, the fact she would turn them down would not stop them asking."

"Kurt, that kid's a sleaze." And you don't know she'd turn them down. "Besides, sixteen has this terminal case of dumb attached. I only survived because I'm invulnerable." Monet eyed Kurt, biting her lip and thinking. He really was gorgeous. "So... If someone asked you?" She really couldn''t scare him off here.

"...it would depend on the person", he said after a moment's thought, looking at her with a mixture of curiosity and, just possibly, interest. "But I am not seeing anybody, as you know, so it is quite possible I would say yes."

Monet smiled at Kurt. "Awesome. Wanna dance?"

"I never turn down an offer to dance," he said with a grin in return, standing up and offering her his hand.

***

It was in a relaxed and easy silence that Kurt and Monet walked back towards the car, side by side. He turned to smile down at her as they drew closer. "This has been a very good evening, you know."

"I should hope so. You were with me, after all." She and Kurt were almost the same height barefoot. With Monet in heels, there was less than an inch between them. She leant in toward Kurt and kissed him.

It wasn't as much of a surprise as it might have been - both in general and in specific - when Kurt had first come to the mansion. There was a half-moment of not exactly hesitation, but faint bemused startlement, before his hand came to rest on her hip and he kissed her back.
