Jennie and Amara take some time out and go shopping. They have a discussion about why gold lame is evil and why Amara should or shouldn't buy the little red dress she tried on.

Classes would be starting up again soon, which meant one thing. It was time to go shopping. Amara didn't have a whole lot to spend, but she did need a new pair of shoes and maybe a new sweater. She'd ended up coming out with Jennie, since she hadn't spent nearly enough time with
the other girl over the break. "So where do you want to go first?"

Jennie clapped her gloves hands together. "I know of a couple of places we could hit, smaller shops and the like," she said sagely. Jennie was a bargain hunter of the finest order. Even without her powers she could practically smell a sale from a mile away. "Shall we tally-ho, then?"

"That sounds great to me!" Amara grinned. Shopping was something she hadn't quite gotten the hang of in her two years in America thus far. It probably didn't help that a lot of her attention had been focused in the kitchen instead. "I will put myself in your capable hands."

Jennie steepled her fingers and grinned wickedly. "Come, young padawan, let Auntie Jennie guide you..."

About an hour later the pair found themselves in a vintage shop in the village. Jennie was a terrible influence when shopping, she could talk the cheapest person on the planet into buying the cute pair of pumps and a dress to go with it. "Okay, Amara, show me what you got!" the older girl called from the next dressing booth over.

"You know I am not really sure about this one Jennie..." She emerged from the dressing room, tugging pn the bottom of the red dress she was trying on. It wasn't the length she had a problem with - though it was a lot shorter than anything else she'd ever worn - but the fact that it hugged every single one of curves and then some. She bit her lip and looked up. "It's a bit..."

Jennie emerged from her own dressing room, in a hideous gold lame tube dress that had been fashionable 20 years ago. The tag on the dress was for an amount considerably less than what similar garments were going for in a high end-boutique. The older girl whistled. "Mothers, lock up your sons," she said appreciatively as she circled Amara.

Amara promptly blushed at Jennie's comment, turning her head to look back into the mirror. "I don't think I go anyway where I could wear something like this..." The parties Amara went to tended to be a lot tamer than a dress like this warranteed. "... and I hate to say it, but that dress is sort of terrible." Clothes should not be shiny like that!

"Oh you could go plenty of places in that dress. Every girl needs at least one slinky dress to go party in. Hell, wear it around the house when you want to feel sexy," Jennie said, turning to admire her rear in the full length mirror. "I don't think anyone can pull off gold lame," she added, tugging it and trying to smooth it. Jennie was not by any stretch of the imagination, fat. But the dress emphasized her curves in all the wrong ways. Jennie stuck her tongue out at her reflection. "This would be hideous even if you were blind."

"Oh I couldn't possibly." Still bright red, she smoothed down the material over her hip. The people at the mansion that might see her! ... the guys at the mansion that would see her. No thank you! "Why do they even make things that look that bad?"

"Why not? You look good in that dress. Looking good is not a crime," Jennie said primly. "...This dress on the other hand? Ugh," she made a face. "I think someone in the fashion industry plays a prank, and suddenly people are wearing black lace bodysuits and thinking they're cool." Scensters being exceptionally guilty. Jennie occasionally went to hipster haunts just so she could gawk at all the heinousity.

"I know, I know. I've just... never worn anything like this before. It's very." She bit her lip, turning to look at herself in the mirror. "Revealing." Did she want people be able to see this much of her body? "You'd think people would know better than to wear something that looked hideous, no matter what fashion dictates."

Jennie rubbed her chin thoughtfully at Amara. "You know, part of being sexy is being comfortable. Take Bettie Page for example. Part of her appeal is that she always looked totally comfortable, like she could wear these jungle girl outfits or these total bondage getups and be all sexy and not ridiculous 'cause she looked like she enjoyed what she was wearing." Jennie stood next to Amara in the mirror. "I mean, I could totally pull this dress off if I looked comfortable and confident enough. Looking good is feeling good, so while I think you look ah-mazing in that dress, you don't look happy. Therefore," Jennie raised a finger. "We find you a dress that is both fabulous and comfortable."

Amara has no idea who Jennie is talking about. But thankfully everything else she is saying makes sense, so she just nods along with what Jennie is saying. "... so can I change out of this now?" She will go and browse a little more. And find something a little less clingy. And maybe not so short.

"Yes, yes," Jennie said, waving a hand as she realized she might have been Speechifying. "There's earth tones I think you would look good in over here..."

"Great!" Amara scurried back into the changing room, quickly changing out of the dress and back into her own clothes. She looked at it on the hanger for a few moments - while part of her wished she could get away with it, the sensible (and more dominant) part of her brain knew she just wouldn't be comfortable. And Jennie had said that was the most important part, right? Right. She emerged, clutching the dress she'd tried on, passing it off to the sales lady before hunting down Jennie.
