Inez and Julian - Tuesday night
Jan. 6th, 2009 10:28 pmbackdated to Tuesday, Jan 6
Julian and Inez meet for their cocoa date, which unintentionally turns into a bit of a confessional.
After his exploratory brewing and confectioning over the winter holiday, Julian knew right where to find what he needed. Within moments of his arrival what would soon be hot chocolate was simmering in the smallest pot he could find, just large enough to make two cups. Inez had said that she was just going to throw on some slippers, but nearly ten minutes had passed. With the rich smells of a coffee house drifting throughout the first floor all that was left to do was to stir the milk and wait for her to show up.
Inez entered the kitchen in a pair of flannel pajama pants and an oversized Xavier Institute sweatshirt, and the previously mentioned fuzzy wool slippers. She took a deep breath and smiled at the smell of the hot chocolate. "My god, you make chocolate. You are like the best EVER."
Julian looked up from adding the chocolate at Inez and smiled, "So I've been told." He began to stir the wooden spoon in a figure-eight through the darkening fluid, "Nice slippers, glad you could make it. How do you like your cocoa?"
"Um. Marshmallows?" Inez said hesitantly. "I didn't know there were different ways to have cocoa. As far as I know, it just comes out of the little magic packet."
Lifting the wooden spoon to his mouth, Julian took a cautious sip of the mixture, it was nearly ready. "A packet is one way to do it. Over break I didn't have much to do- and my parents didn't see the sense in my coming back home after just having arrived here. To pass the time," a wry smile crossed his lips as he reached for a bottle of Irish cream flavored syrup, "I did three things. First, I read most of the stories in the books that Mister Beaubeir handed out. Second, I tackled the bulk of the DVD library in the rec room." Julian gave the mixture a final stir, before pouring the contents into two mugs. He rummaged through the cupboards silently before finding a packet of mini-mellows- tossing a few into each mug before presenting one to Inez. "The third thing I did was work on how to make a bitchin' cup of cocoa. This is what I came up with."
Inez took a sip and almost immediately let out a sigh of happiness, her eyes closing. "Mmm, chocolate. One of the no-fail sure-fire ways to get on my good side, you know."
She wasn't just being flirtatious, the cocoa was excellent. Different from the greasy spoon diner hot chocolate with canned whipped cream, or the campfire mix with the crunchy dried marshmallow bits; in the way that filet mignon was "different" from a Big Mac. She took another long sip and cradled the mug carefully in her hands. "It was my first Christmas by myself, too," she replied quietly.
Julian took a somber sip from his mug, unsure of what to say at first as the conversation took a somber turn. "I'm surprised we didn't run into each other sooner then," he said, trying to lighten the mood a little. He paused for a moment, taking another sip before continuing, "I know you probably don't want to talk about it- but I'm kind of curious why your dad's in prison. I mean, if you don't want to talk about it- that's cool, but if you do…" he let the comment hang.
Inez sighed again, staring down into her mug. She hadn't even talked to the school's counselor about her dad, but for some reason, it helped to have someone interested to hear. "We moved around a lot since I was just a baby and my mom died. Cancer,' she explained. "My daddy had done some stuff to try and get money for her medical bills, but it wasn't enough and got him... he was a cop, and he broke a lot of laws to try and help her. So we went on the run. Never staying anywhere too long, he'd work an angle somewhere while I went to another new school with a new last name. I don't think I ever had two birthdays in the same place, you know?"
She took another sip of the cocoa and sniffled a bit. "Last year while I was at school, he walked into a bank with an unloaded gun. Just to get himself arrested because..." she sniffed louder and wiped her eyes unconsciously. "Because he knew he couldn't take care of me and that they'd send me somewhere that could. So he's in prison and I'm here and it sucks."
This was not how Julian had pictured getting a cup of coffee with a hot blond girl going. "I'm…sorry," was all he could manage at first. His issues with his family suddenly seemed rather miniscule compared to what Inez had been through. Julian set his mug down on the counter and sidled up to his new friend, putting an arm around her shoulder. "I mean, that really sucks- but is it really so bad here? I totally thought this place would suck when I was on my way here, it's on the other side of the world from where I was. But here, I have friends like me," he pulled her a little closer for a moment with the arm he had draped across her shoulder. "It sucks being away from the people who care about us, but at least we've got each other and an awesome mansion to live in." He turned and looked at Inez, waiting to find out if he'd said the right thing.
Slowly, Inez turned to look at Julian, completely forgetting about the cocoa. "...no, it's very not bad..." she said quietly, trying to hide a blush.
With another one of his heart melting smiles Julian gently rubbed Inez's shoulder, for a moment nothing needed to be said. He casually reached behind himself and picked up his mug, moving it around in front of himself and holding it up to Inez. "If you're ever feeling down about being here," he paused and looked into her eyes, "just let me know and we'll make some chocolate."
Blinking, Inez cleared her throat and raised her mug to her lips, quickly draining the rest of it. "Yes of course right. Chocolate. Wow it's late. I need to go take a shower. I mean, and sleep. Yes! Classes tomorrow and all that. Wouldn't want to be late for math, especially when, y'know, my boss teaches the class."
She cocked her head to the side, and then spontaneously reached out to give Julian as light a squeeze as she could on the shoulder. "You're a good guy, newbie. I suppose I'll see you in class?"
At first Julian thought he'd said something wrong, but he knew it was too late to do anything about that now. "Yeah, you'll see me around," he said with a smile, inwardly grimacing and thinking he'd blown his chance.
Inez smiled and tried her best not to skip as she headed down the hall. Cold shower, cold shower, cold shower... she repeated to herself. Yes, she thought. There would definitely have to be a cocoa date again.
