Log: Amanda and Laurie
Jan. 15th, 2009 11:54 amAmanda shows up to see Laurie, and ends up helping her down to the sun room for her first official trip out of the suite.
Laurie placed her feet carefully in the slippers that she'd gotten last Christmas, and paused for a moment to catch her breath. She'd been told that she could sit in the sun room today, and she was wanting to be ready for when they sent someone to help her down.
She'd finally realised that if she wanted to get better, she would need to follow the doctor's instructions. Even if they were frustrating, and boring and the seemingly endless napping made her feel like an old woman.
As expected, there was a tapping on the door, but instead of Morgan or perhaps Kyle or someone similar, it was Amanda standing there when it opened. "Hey," she said with a smile, and then took in the dressing gown and slippers. "Planning an escape?" she asked, grinning.
"Amanda!" Laurie said, moving quickly to give the older woman a hug, and then holding up a hand as the quick movement caused her to cough rather alarmingly. "Sorry, I'm like the amazing coughing girl lately. More that Jean said she was going to send someone up to take me to the sun room today. Actual official 'movement out of my room' that won't get me lectured is rather exciting."
"Hah. Good to see the coincidences are still following me around. I came up to see if you wanted distracting, but if you've got permission from Jean to venture out, I'm happy to play escort for you." Amanda wasn't going to ask Laurie if she was sure she was telling the truth about having permission - either she did or she didn't, and if she was dumb enough to still be disobeying doctor's orders, on her head be it. "Where to, madam?" she continued, putting on the "posh" accent and half-bowing. Since she'd come back she'd been focussing on being as normal as possible - it was the only way she didn't break down yet again and people needed her. Plenty of time for the nervous breakdown later.
"Sun room. It's the only place in the house that's warm, has sun, and I can nap comfortably on various window seat thingies in." Laurie noted, allowing herself to lean on Amanda. She hadn't realised, but now that she'd given up on pretending that she was perfectly fine, her body seemed determined to let her know just how tiring moving around was. "Are you here for a long time, or just till Pete is able to move? How is he? No one's been saying much, although Morgan told me what went down."
Amanda shrugged, as well as she could whilst supporting someone. "I'm here until Pete tells me to sod off, basically," she replied. "He's doing better physically - there's talk of moving him to Muir at some point for more treatment - but I can't really say much more than that." She wouldn't bring Laurie down with the drama that was going on. "Everyone's back and recovering. Garrison's taken off for a bit to get his head together, and Dani and Jay are doing best they can. They're... not the same people they were."
"I don't suppose they would be." Laurie noted, but there was a sadness evident in her tone. "I..."
She paused, realising that there really wasn't anything she could say that would make this better. She might have offered to go see them, but there were much more qualified people already looking after them. She leaned a little more on Amanda, quiet now as they walked toward the stairs down.
The witch didn't break the silence, not having anything to say herself - what could be said that wouldn't be trite? The pause continued until they reached the sunroom. "Madam, your destination," Amanda declared, trying for the previous joking tone and not quite managing it. "You want the comfy chair?"
"What is this, the Spanish Inquisition?" Laurie asked, completing the joke, but with a distracted air of someone coming out of deep thought. "Yes, please. Can you stay for a little, or do you need to get back? I think there's a deck of UNO cards around here somewhere."
"No-one expects the Spanish Inquisition!" Amanda replied in kind. "But yeah, I can stay. What's this about London?" she asked, settling Laurie into the chair and grabbing a rug to throw over her lap. "You said something about planning a trip?"
"Yeah, I'm going to take a five month deferral from my classes and the X-men and go see Europe." Laurie said, resting back in the chair with a happy sigh. "So, Ireland and London to start with, and then joining a Contiki tour for a bit, and then just going back to any places that I really loved after that. I need to see the world, get a little bit more perspective about what's out there before I settle into letting medical school drive me insane."
"Sounds like a good idea." Amanda took a seat of her own, hand going to her pocket for the nicotine gum she'd taken to chewing during long hours down in the basement. "Nothing wrong with getting a bit of world experience. Just don't go messing with any demi-gods or the like - I've already done my rescue mission for the year."
"No demi Gods - check" Laurie noted, blinking somewhat sleepily at the other girl, tired now that she'd stopped moving about. "How long since you took a day off? I know you went on that trip, but that was business wasn't it?"
"I joined my family for Christmas," Amanda pointed out, perhaps a little defensively. Everyone was on her case about overworking, it seemed. "And I took the afternoon off to be with Ange when I got back."
"Far be it from me to give anyone trouble over not giving themself enough of a break." Laurie noted with an air of amusement. "Especially considering my inability to take a break gave me pneumonia."
"Yeah, I think I've got a way to go yet to beat that," was the dry reply.
