As the three of you are now full-time staff members, there is a situation about which you need to be made aware.

Marie, you in particular have been vocally curious about our new groundskeeper, Mr. Marko: where he came from, why I hired him, why he takes his particularly zealous attitude toward his duties.

The short answer to this question is that Cain Marko is my stepbrother; he grew up here, and considers this house to be his home, as in fact it is. Although his abilities give him the appearance and vigor of youth, he is only a few years my junior.

The long answer involves an incident of some kind--I don't know exactly what--during his tour in Vietnam, which left him as you see him now, and in a coma. After he woke, he vanished, only to resurface, against all expectation, in military custody shortly before he came here. He remains under a form of house arrest, having been convicted of assaulting a military installation in an effort, he says, to draw my attention. Unable to find a prison that could hold him against his will, they sent him here under the terms of a Federal plea bargain, which as one of its requirements stipulates that he seek psychiatric counseling; he is meeting with Dr. MacTaggart regularly and she has high hopes for him. I do not now, nor have I ever considered him to be a physical danger to the other residents here, or I would not have allowed him to stay.

Cain and I disagree, as we have always done, on a number of matters, but he is here to find peace and sanctuary, just as with many of the students. To that end, and preferring to be judged on his own merits and flaws rather than mine, he has requested that our relationship and the circumstances of his arrival remain private as long as can be managed. I trust that you will each behave with the discretion appropriate to your new positions, and honor that request until Cain chooses to speak of himself more publicly. If you have any questions, please ask them, and I will do my best to answer as fully and frankly as I may.

Thank you very much for the information, Professor. I have to admit that Mr Marko set off some of my alarms but I've tried to be nicer about things because I know you wouldn't put the students in danger here knowingly and he really does seem to care about the place, which is always a good thing. I'll just continue on as I have, if that's okay.
