Angelo and Amanda celebrate their second anniversary with dinner.
It was odd, going to somewhere you regularly did and being ushered in like royalty. Mama Lupe had descended on them as soon as they'd opened the door, hustling them to a corner table which had been spread with a tablecloth and decked with candles and a small posy of flowers in a vase. Wine appeared and was poured without them even ordering it and once their food choices had been made, Amanda leaned forward.
"Let me guess. You mentioned what this was for?" she asked, amused.
"Mentioned, hell", Angelo returned with a grin. "She knew. I think she keeps a diary for her favourites."
"I'm surprised she let us actually order, but I think my whole 'nothing really spicy today' freaked her out." The puffiness and redness of her eyes had gone down, but she was being cautious and avoiding anything too close to pepper spray for a bit longer, just in case she set herself off again. Still, it was nice to get out of the apartment. Even nicer to be out with her boyfriend, celebrating. Picking up her glass, she raised it to him. "So, here's to another year."
"If she can deal with Doug easin' himself back into spicy, she can deal with you goin' without just this once." He toasted her back, clinking glasses. "Another year an' makin' it to three."
"Mmm." Taking a sip, Amanda savoured the first alcohol she'd been allowed in a week before setting the glass down. "Hopefully next year isn't quite as action-packed," she said wryly. "I'd like to be able to actually see you more 'n once in a while."
"Yeah, I think we can both get behind that", he agreed more seriously. "I know it's just our lives, but it's been a hell of a year for both of us."
"Definitely less being eaten by cities for me," she replied, smiling a little. "And less being blown up for you. Maybe we should make it an anniversary resolution?"
"No more suicide bombers or cities comin' to life", he agreed lightly. "Noted. At least until the next weird thing shows up."
"Now all we need to do is get Nate and Pete to stick to it themselves and we'd have a stress-free life." Amanda leaned her chin on one hand, looking at Angelo contemplatively. "Still, they're grown ups and can deal with us having our own lives occasionally."
"Pete's better at it than Nate", Angelo pointed out with a crooked grin. "Even with the wheelchair, he's still ahead on the numbers. But... yeah, they can deal."
"He's doing better. Should be home soon, I hope." Amanda sighed a little, thinking of Pete and how he'd been. "But yeah. Life goes on, and so do we." She grinned suddenly. "Do you want your present now?"
"If it's somethin' you don't mind givin' me in public", he said, straight-faced.
"That's for later," she told him, nudging his foot with hers under the table. Reaching into her bag, which was hanging off the back of the chair, she pulled out a small box wrapped in plain white paper with a red bow. "You're getting harder to get presents for, mind. I mean, after your last birthday, I was kind of stuck to top that."
"You did pretty well last birthday", he acknowledged, then proceeded to unwrap and open the box. "...and again this time. No more wakin' people up."
She looked pleased, clasping her hands in front of her to avoid clapping - in many ways, Amanda was still a little girl when it came to gift giving. "The little ones're pretty easy to change, too. So when I'm off an about, you can change the time for me," she explained. "I stuck it on London for now, 'cause it's sort of the default, yeah? And there's Tel Aviv, for when you want to talk to Dom or Rahne."
"The London one's gonna be yours", he agreed. "An' Tel Aviv... yeah. Dom, Rahne, any of the others... this is great."
"'M glad you like it." She leaned over the table to steal a quick kiss, careful not to set her hair on fire with the candle. "And it fitted, what with us never having enough time lately. Time, watch, all that."
He pulled her hair gently and automatically out of the way as he returned the kiss, then smiled. "Makes sense. Here's to it bein' a good omen."
Her returning smile was almost shy. "I did good, then. Go me." She was about to say more when food started arriving, and she sat back. "Wow. Did we order all this?"
"...no." He looked a little taken aback, glancing towards the kitchen. "Guess Mama's decided we need feedin' up again."
