After a discussion on the journals, Julian and Doreen get together to watch Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends for both a first and last time. (Backdated to Sunday afternoon when the Cartoon Network Marathon was on.)

Doreen popped the corn, Monkey Joe standing by the bowl, waiting to steal the kernels. She did it ‘old school’ as her brother like to say, and actually used a pan. Given her love for TV shows, movies and cartoons in general, popcorn was staple and you had to do it right. Doreen liked to think she made great popcorn. She would’ve added caramel and nuts too, but she didn’t know if Julian would like that.

She poured the corn into the bowl and gave Monkey Joe a kernel and then skipped to the rec room.

“I’m here! I have the popcorn!” she said brightly.

With the TV tuned to Cartoon Network, Julian had sacked out on the couch, waiting for Doreen to show up with the popcorn. The show was both odd and entertaining at the same time, the caffeine from the bottle of Coke was helping him keep interest. When Dori arrived, he stood up and waved to the space next to his on the couch. "And I have the Coke, er, Cola." They settled into the couch together, "Okay, that last episode made no sense, who are these characters?"

“Yay, pop!” Doreen said, sitting down and handing him the bow. Monkey Joe gave Julian a look that was pure begging. “Oh, yeah, it can be kind of weird. Basically Mac is the kid who imagined Blue and because his mom didn’t want him to have Blue around anymore, he took him to this home for Imaginary Friends that basically puts them up for adoption. And the other friends live there too and Frankie does the chores for her Grandma, who owns the home and it’s really great.”

Julian popped a few kernels in his mouth, his eyes going wide as the flavor hit him, "Whoa, this is really good." He grabbed another handful and ate it with gusto, a few bits falling down his chest.

Monkey Joe jumped over and stole a few of the popcorn kernels on Julian’s chest before running back to Doreen, “Yeah I know. It’s one of my favorite shows of all time! …Well, the first season of heroes was better. And I do like Firefly… but this is one of the best American Cartoons ever… if you don’t count Avatar, I suppose… Either way it’s good.”

"Huh?" He looked over at Doreen who was still watching the show. "No, Dori I meant the popcorn. It's fantastic." Julian popped a few more kernels in his mouth, chewing them in a satisfied way. "What's your secret?"

“Oh, that? I don’t microwave it or use a popper, you have to make it on the stove. Dad taught me,” Doreen said. It had been years ago when they had stayed up late one night watching movies. One of the few times he hadn’t been overly concerned with work. “Dad makes the best popcorn ever.”

"Can you teach me sometime?" Julian asked, turning his attention toward the TV. A strange ostrich-parrot like creature was on, speaking in caws, "Okay, what the heck- no subtitles?"

“That’s Coco. That’s how she talks. You know, in a way Fosters is a lot like here,” Doreen said with a sage nod, “You’ll see why. And I will. It’s not hard.”

"Thanks," Julian replied, taking another handful of popcorn into his mouth.

For a while the show progressed, the particular episode they watched was about Superheroes and idolization- with some not-so-subtle nods at making sure not to abandon your real friends. When the episode was over Julian turned to his friend, smiling, "Okay, that was funny...but how does that relate to us here?"

“Think about it. It’s a bunch of cool people in a big house who are different from everyone outside, but it’s all in good ways,” Doreen said, her cheeks stuffed with popcorn as she fed a couple of kernels to Monkey Joe who gave Julian a look that just said ‘duh.’

Remembering the conversation they'd had in fairy tale class about literary metaphors and started to draw some connections himself. "Ah, and the various different shapes in friends are like all of our different powers." Julian sat in contemplation for a moment, "You might be on to something." His hand darted out and grabbed a couple of the last kernels from the bowl, "The question becomes though- which character are you."

“I dunno. I like Eduardo, and I guess I kinda feel like that sometimes,” Doreen said smiling, “Except for being purple and speaking Spanish. But he can do a lot of things like I can. If he were real, I would adopt him.”

A chuckle rose in Julian's throat and a friendly smile to his lips, "I'm pretty sure your imagination would have already made quite a few imaginary friends by the time you decided to adopt him." Thinking for a moment, an odd idea came to mind, "How do you know that Monkey Joe isn't imaginary?"

Doreen laughed and then made a series of clicking noises after which Monkey Joe jumped for, and landed on, Julian’s head, “Because I met him outside the pizza place,” she said, “And he can’t fly and doesn’t have super strength, he’s just a squirrel. But an awesome one.”

Julian wasn't necessarily afraid of Monkey Joe, but the sudden appearance of what was typically considered a wild animal on his head did cause a reflex that he had to suppress. As Monkey Joe clicked at him he laughed, nervously, "What's he saying?"

She reached over and grabbed him and then listened for a minute, “That he’s not make-believe. He’s smarter than most squirrels,” she said with a smile.

Looking at Monkey Joe, "That's entirely too true." Then back to Doreen, "I wonder if there's a mutant out there who actually can do that. Make imaginary friends I mean."

“I don’t know, I think so,” Doreen said, “I mean, that would be something that could happe.”

It made sense from a philosophical standpoint, "Heh, philosophic conversation springing up from a kid's tee-vee show...wasn't expecting that today." Julian took a drink of his Coca-cola and settled into the couch, "So this is the last run for this show, huh? Well, at least we can send it off in style." He glanced down at the empty bowl, then over to Doreen, "How about we go pop some more corn before they start the last five? A whole bunch this time."

“Okay! Do you want caramel corn? If we have the stuff, I can make that for us,” she said with a grin, “Though it takes a bit longer so I can just make normal popcorn too. And this is one of the best shows ever.”

"I'm sure we can dig whatever you need up in the kitchen," he stood, "come on, let's get poppin'." Inwardly, Julian groaned, not believing he'd just said something so corny.

It had Doreen giggling, “Let’s get poppin’…” she laughed, “That’s really funny.”
