Logs: Tabitha and Callie
May. 4th, 2009 02:45 pmEveryone's favorite librarian wanders across a sleeping girl and unleashes the Spanish Inquisition on the poor student.
The girl was in the library all the time. Tabitha eyed her from behind the reference desk with a jaded eye. Today, she was fairly sure the girl was sleeping and not studying. She narrowed her eyes. It was high past time she introduced herself.
"Hi!" Tabs said as she plopped her butt down in the chair beside the pink-skinned girl.
The girl in question lifted her head up from the page of notes she had been working on. Long days in class, coupled with intensive gardening had literally wiped her out. She wanted nothing more than to just curl up and nap. Unfortunately this homework wasn't going to complete itself, so instead Callie had to settle with stealing little catnaps in the library. It was generally quiet, that is until someone decided to come and disturb her slumber.
"What time is it," she asked sitting up slowly in her chair. She rubbed her bleary eyes, trying to shake the sleep from them and see who exactly was talking to her.
"Nearly six," Tabs replied. "Y'know, they have these nifty new inventions for that sort of thing. They're called beds," she said with a wink. "I occasionally use one myself, despite the trouble of dragging myself away from the library. I find it rewarding and worth the effort."
"But if I were to sleep there I wouldn't wake up until tomorrow," explained Callie as she stretched and contorted body. "And I have too much homework to do. So that would be bad. This way I get like twenty, maybe thirty minutes max, of napping then I'm good to go for awhile." She nodded. There was a system, and she had pretty much mastered it.
She laughed and shook her head. "You're more than ready for college. How old are you?" she asked.
"I'll be seventeen in August." Callie swung her body so that she was now facing the woman she recognized as the librarian. "And why do you say that?”
"If I remember right, and I could be wrong, because the whole thing was a caffeinated and sleep-deprived haze," she explained, "college is all about catching naps between bouts of studying and paper writing."
The young student shot a glance at her stacks of books and papers that seemed to be growing exponentially with every passing day. And unfortunately for her that wasn't likely to stop. "I already feel like I'm there and I have another year of high school to go through first," she sighed.
"Well, you don't have to go directly to college after high school," Tabitha pointed out. There's always the "year abroad" those rich cats take. Xavier's is an excellent resource for something like that. A year with Elpis will probably get you into any college you want."
"That's actually not a bad idea," Callie said after thinking over the suggestion the librarian had just put forth. "I don't know, I've already lived abroad so it's not as exciting I guess? But maybe Elpis. I don't know." She leaned back in her chair and stretched her arms up as far as they would go. It had been always drilled into her that after high school you went to college and after college she was planning on going to med school, then interning and residency, so pretty much the next decade or so of her life was already planned out.
But now she realized that there were more options out there, options that were tempting enough to almost sway her from the path she and her father had planned out.
"I mean, I don't know if I could spare an entire year away from school. Pre-Med and Med School and such are really hard and really competitive, but having extra activities on my CV would look good. It's just a lot to think about right now."
Tabitha thought for a minute. "I think we have a book about getting into advanced schools and the things a body needs to do." She tapped her chin before she wandered over to the reference section. She dropped a well-worn paperback on the table. "Try this."
Callie eyed the book for a moment before picking it up and flipping through its pages. She knew that her near perfect SAT score and high GPA would make her a good candidate, but this book looked like it would give her some more ideas to help set her apart from the rest of the application pool. "Thanks Miss... I'm sorry I forgot your name." Her cheeks reddened at this realization that she had forgotten this detail.
The blond woman grinned. "Tabitha Smith, most of the students call me Miss Tabitha, and I'm kosher with that. Just let me know if you need anything else."
