Julian puts off homework and meets the new RA in the process. (Backdated to Sunday night)
In her effort to be more accessible and more social, a challenge that was not an easy one, Dani was in the rec room making door decorations. She was no good at them, at least in her opinion, but she was trying. They were fun. She had cheated though and had bought pre-cut crayon shapes in different colours. All she really had to do was write each residents name on them and stick them to the doors. So far, she had done ones for herself, Jan and Tommy and was starting on the students. Choosing colours for each of them was hard though, did she give Yvette a red one? Or another colour? She figured other RAs didn't have these problems since they never had consider whether their residents were pink or red or various other colours.
In his effort to not do his homework, Julian was heading to the rec room to watch TV. It'd been a rather interesting Sunday and up until then, not a very relaxing one- but some bad cable movies or maybe a repeat showing of Spider-man 3 would change that. Even back home, there had always been an increase in his workload as the semester was winding down and given that the course work was harder here...well, he'd nearly been buried in a landslide of books and papers when a stack of them had fallen over after a hard sneeze.
Unfortunately the TV was occupied, but that didn't matter. Julian vaulted himself over the couch and took a seat next to the dark skinned woman who seemed to be slightly older than he was. "Whatchyawatchin'?"
Looking up from what she was doing, Dani's eyes widened and she lashed out automatically then stopped herself at the last minute from hitting him, her arm less than an inch from his body. Hitting a student would be bad. Very bad. Moving her arm away and scooting over a little, she looked at him blankly. She was vaguely aware he had asked a question. What had he asked?
"Oohhhkaaaay," Julian slowly pressed himself toward the arm of the couch. As she scooted the other way he lowered the impromptu TeeKay shield that he'd put up, glowing just an inch away from his body. "So, you're a no talking kind of person then, got it." He turned his attention toward the cartoon playing on the television.
"Um. No," Dani tried to turtle into herself and disappear right now, "That is...I talk. Sorry. I'm Dani. The RA?" she had made a post about it the other day. Some people had even commented. With conscious effort she picked her black marker up again. "Sorry."
Julian blinked, "You're the new RA? Oh, I'm Julian, I...um...said hello on the journals." With some hesitation, a hand came forward for her to shake- it moved slowly, like he wasn't sure if fast motions were a good idea.
Looking at his hand as if it might bite, she took it and gave it a firm shake. Her grip was strong and firm. "I remember you," she smiled and tried to pretend like everything was fine, but in her mind his fears danced like a sweet nectar. She had been actively blocking everything when he had come in, but touching him had made some leak through. She had known it would. They were tasty and she resisted the urge to lick her lips. "I'm not normally...well...yes I am. You surprised me. I don't...do well with surprises like that."
"I can respect that," he said, oblivious to her slightly elevated state. "I was asking what it is you're watching," Julian pointed at the TV and turned his attention toward it.
"Oh!" Dani turned her attention to the TV for a moment, the show was nothing she recognized, "I...have no idea actually. It had been MASH," now, whatever it was, was definitely not MASH. That was sad, she liked MASH. "I wasn't paying much attention."
"Ah," he glanced at the television again, "do you mind if I change it?" Before she could answer the remote was in his hand and the channels were flying by. "So, what are your powers?"
She didn't mind, there was nothing in particular she wanted to watch,"Fear," she answered, "I see people's fears. Can broadcast them too," just to that individual, but it was still something. The person she was showing them to had no idea that it wasn't real, complete sensory override. "Don't make me much use at parties, like you," she indicated how he was changing channels.
He chuckled and set down the remote, "Telekinesis is not a parlor trick...or something like that is what Nathan would say. As for me," he focused on one of the heavier wooden tables and spun it 180 degrees before setting it back down. With a smile he finished the thought, "It can be fun, but it's been tough to learn."
"It's useful," she agreed, glad he had put it back as he found it. "I'm making door decs. You think Yvette would like the red one or another color?" She still hadn't decided.
He glanced at the crayons, "Oh, cool, um, yeah- go with red, I think she likes the color." He recalled that the Apple Ninja had never left him or anyone else an apple that wasn't red. "Have you done mine yet?"
Shuffling through the stack she handed him a blue one, "Blue for a boy," she pronounced though Fred had green and Johnny was getting orange. It wasn't really an exact science. The only colours that weren't being used for the guys were purple or pink. That seemed reasonable to her, though those two colours were not being used just for girls either. Callie's was green too for example.
He'd been hoping for green to match his energy signature, but blue would have to do. "Ah, matches my eyes," Julian grabbed the decoration and held it up to his face with a smile, the crayon a much richer shade of blue. Setting the decoration back down he turned back toward the television, "How long have you been here?"
"Four years, when I was 17," she had finished high school here, "Been an RA on and off for a few years now since graduation. Ain't too good with sticking to one thing, I guess," she had started and stopped college a few times, her job with Xavier's, being an RA. She wasn't sure she was liking this trend, but each time she'd had good reasons. "You like it here? No problems?"
He chuckled, "It's better than it was back home...no, I love it here- even after all that stuff with the reality show murder thing." Julian turned back to her, impassively, "Are you an X-man then?"
Wow. That was saying a lot. Shaking her head, Dani continued making her decorations, "No," she didn't go into the recent kidnapping and brainwashing that she was recovering from, "Not my thing. Worked for a while as the school secretary though," she had been considering the X-Men though. She had the abilities now, denying them wouldn't make them go away. "My powers aren't really the best for combat anyways."
"Well what do you do with fear? It sounds like that could be adapted to combat situations...besides that's not all they do, right? I mean, it's not just one long war." Julian had forgotten about the television program in light of her mystery powers. He always liked to learn about other peoples powers. "For me, I'm working on being able to move tiny things- but big things, no problem." With the exception of the television, it was silent while he waited for her to elaborate.
"I can make your worst, darkest fears come true so it consumes you and you cannot tell reality from the hell I create," and oh did that sound like fun! Gripping the marker harder, she continued, "It's not very nice," and she liked it. She liked it a lot, but how could she tell him that? She couldn't. Driving people insane was not what sane, adjusted people did, not matter how much she might enjoy it.
A beat of silence passed between them; "No, it doesn't sound like it would be," Julian finally said. They sat in uncomfortable silence, had he thought she was telling the truth, maybe things would have been different, but she had a dreamy look of contentment on her face. "You have pretty good control though, right?" he asked, having no desire to live out his nightmares.
"I do," she hadn't always, but now she did. That was perhaps one of the best things to come out of the entire non-death thing. "Didn't always, but now I do." She finished the name on her crayon and selected another. "That's why we're here."
"Yeah," Julian said passively. He turned his attention back to the television and sunk into his seat, only a little on edge.
They lapsed into silence and soon, Dani had her crayon door decorations finished. Gathering her supplies up, she went to take them to the teachers workroom to get them laminated. "It was nice to meet you, Julian," she said as she left, knowing that she must have scared him, unintentionally.
