Dori brings Kurt tea and food. The conversation somehow ends with an offer of swing dance lessons.
Last night, after bringing Miss Monet her tea, Doreen had been directed that Mr. Sefton might also need some care. She was fond of the blue mutant for reasons other than the fact that he had a tail. He was really nice. The way she wished more people could actually be. So she showed up with a tray. Despite her short attention span she was actually pretty good at this. With Mom working all the time she had to learn how to cook to feed both her and her brother if they wanted more than box food, and money becoming more and more scarce made her more creative.
But that wasn’t a problem here. So she loaded up a tray with a sandwich, soup and some tea and made her way to Mr. Sefton’s suite and knocked, “Hello?”
The door had been left just ajar and swung open at her knock. Inside, the door to Kurt's bedroom was more firmly closed, no light showing underneath, but a handwritten sign had been tacked to it reading "Door is open. May be awake. Come in."
Doreen slowly opened the door, she knew for a fact how much light could hurt your eyes if you weren’t expecting it. It was easier for her to balance the tray and open it, “Mister Sefton?” Doreen said softly, “I brought some food. Are you awake?”
"Doreen", he said quietly, yellow eyes open and visible in the dark when her sight adjusted. "For now, yes. Thank you."
Doreen made her way through the dark room easily, because to her it wasn’t all that dark. She couldn’t see in total darkness, but she was pretty good with this, “I’m glad I didn’t wake you up,” Doreen said simply as she brought the tray in, “And glad you’re awake because there’s soup and soup sucks when it’s cold.”
"Soup is good", was the almost cheerful response. "Is this your job, today? Looking after the broken brains?"
“Well, I brought Miss Monet tea last night and she mentioned that you were also hurt and Yvette mentioned bringing food to everyone so I kind of put everything together on my own, I guess. I figured you’d like something to eat, you know?” Doreen chattered, setting the tray down next to the bed. “How did you get your brain broken?”
"We had an encounter with a sonic-powered mutant." He pushed himself up carefully. "Sonic booms are not friendly things."
“Oh,” Doreen said, “I’m sorry. I mean, that can’t have been very fun at all. Not that it would be fun in the first place,” she said, “But at least everyone’s okay? I mean, I hope everyone’s okay.”
"Everyone from here will recover", Kurt assured her, as he turned a little to study the food on the tray. "What kind of soup is it?"
“It’s chicken noodle, but it’s not from a can,” Doreen said, “And the sandwich is chicken and cheese and stuff,” it wasn’t something she could eat, other than the chicken soup (since it didn’t have much meat in it) but it had been a favorite of her brother. “There’s actually a lot of stuff in the kitchen you can make stuff with so I tried. I hope it turned out okay.”
"You made it from scratch?" He blinked at her then, decisively, "You are a very sweet girl. You should know that."
“Well, not really. There was a bag of noodles and the chicken broth and then it’s just finding vegetables and stuff. I’m really good at finding food. Even if it’s frozen,” food always had a stronger smell to her than people, “And then it’s just throwing things together until it smells right. So it’s really not that much work if you think about it. I’d do it all the time back home. Someone had to. Mom was always working after Dad decided to, well, leave, I guess.”
"More work than some go to for themselves, let alone others", Kurt pointed out, lifting the tray cautiously into his lap. "And if it smelled right to you, I am sure it is just fine."
Doreen was there to help, if he needed it, “It really wasn’t that much at all. I’m sure there are better cooks here then me,” Doreen said, “At least, I hope so. Let me know how it tastes. There’s enough down there for a few people,” if she didn’t eat any.
The tray did wobble enough that he was glad of her steadying hands, before they got it securely settled. Kurt took a healthy spoonful, then smiled up at her. "It is very good."
“Awesome,” Doreen said, smiling, “Is there anything else you want? There’s no chips on there, but I can go get some. Or if you didn’t want tea, I can get some coffee or something,” she said, happily.
"I do not think coffee would be the best idea", he said after due consideration. "The food and tea will be fine, but company would make it better if you have time to stay."
“I have time,” Doreen said, “So I can keep you company. Let’s see, should I talk about something? Prom was fun, I went with Johnny.”
"I looked in on prom", Kurt told her with a faint smile. "I am glad everyone had a good time." At least until Angel and Julian's disaster, but he wasn't sure Doreen knew about that.
“Everyone did. Well, Julian did something stupid, but that’s another story completely,” Doreen said.
"Everyone had a good time until that", he qualified. "And most did after."
“Yeah. Johnny and I had a great time, and before that happened, I got to swing dance with Julian, it was fun.”
"I have won swing dance contests, you know", Kurt said idly. "If you enjoyed it, I would be happy to teach you more."
“Really?” Doreen asked, perking up, “I would! It was great!”
That got a small crooked grin, as he was trying not to move his head overmuch. "Then when my head is not trying to break open, we shall."
“Thank you!” Doreen said brightly, “Oh my gosh, I can’t wait!”
