In the kitchen, Sarah meets a pretty purple kitty.
She was still getting lost. Even with the upgrades and maps and wandering she'd done, Sarah was still getting lost - but not so turned around in the mansion that she couldn't find the kitchen, at least. And food was definitely on the 'To Do List' after the long day she'd had already.
With the refrigerator door propped open, the young technopath perused the offerings; taking care to bypass anything with a name on it or that even remotely looked like it could belong to a resident. No use in pissing someone off her first day by eating their food.
Hearing the fridge door open made Catseye realize that she was starving. She uncurled from her sunny spot in an alcove and padded with great purpose into the kitchen, stopping in her tracks and skidding a little when she caught the scent and the sight of a NewPerson. Curious, she leapt up onto the counter and sat down near the girl's elbow. "Mrrt?"
The brunette looked up at the sound, and her frown shifted into a delighted smile when she caught sight of the cat. "Hello there, Kitty," Sarah greeted, reaching out to scratch the animal behind the ears. "I didn't know cats could mutate, too, or did some mean senior squirt you with dye before he left?" A little chuckle and she went back to digging out her snack - the apples looked safe, so did the cheese and pepperoni. Hopefully there were crackers around somewhere, too.
Catseye pawed at the pepperoni when it was placed on the counter. She was well-used to the remarks about dye from new people by now- they barely bothered her anymore, so long as she didn't get asked who her owner was.
Looking from the pack to the cat and back, Sarah gave a little shrug before offering the feline a piece and popping a second into her mouth. "Someone leave you behind for the summer or you just live here?" the girl wondered out loud as she stood on her tiptoes, searching out the crackers in the cabinets. "Mutant cat for the mutant house. Makes sense. I guess I can feed you until someone tells me to stop." Or until the animal started to put on weight.
Not about to argue with the proclamation of getting fed until someone told the new girl to stop, Catseye wolfed down pepperoni. It wasn't bad as far as meat went, but it was no pastrami. She jumped off the counter and opened the fridge door with her tail, sitting up on her back legs and stretching up to the pastrami shelf with her front paws. It was just a little bit too far back to reach. She could climb on the other shelves, but why go to that trouble when NewGirl could reach the pastrami for her? "Mrrow?"
Box in hand, Sarah rocked back onto her heels just in time to see the cat open up the refrigerator. "Wow. Sweet trick, kitty," she complimented, leaning down to scratch the animal's head again. "You want some milk? Pepperoni made you thirsty or is there something else?" If only it was as easy to talk to the feline as it was to take to her iPod. "Or... hm? You want this?" she asked, touching the pastrami the purple cat's eyes were glued on.
"Mrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt!" Catseye answered forcefully, tail lashing in anticipation. She lept back up on the counter and opened a cupboard to pull down a plate with her tail, setting it in front of the girl for her crackers and cheese.
"Someone trained you really well," she laughed, placing the meat and crackers next to the dish. "Have to love mutant kitties who can lend a paw." Sarah opened the pastrami and cutting a piece, put it on the counter for the cat to nibble as she sliced up cheese and apple for herself.
Instead of taking the piece, Catseye took the package of pastrami with her claws, pulling it towards herself to take a large bite.
"I guess that works too," came the chuckle again, the technopath scratching behind the cat's ears again. "Hungry thing, huh? Glad I could help you out."
Catseye left her pastrami to walk over to the girl and bump her head against her elbow, arching her back and purring as she rubbed up against the girl's arm. In doing so, she noticed Sarah's watch. It was very shiny! "Mrrt!" She placed a paw on the shiny, intrigued.
Putting the knife aside, Sarah took the cat's face between both palms and used her fingers to scratch and pet the animal affectionately. "Such a pretty kitty. You like my watch, huh? My sister gave it to me for my birthday. I bet you like it because it has wings like birds you like to chase."
The purple cat definitely liked this girl. She returned to her pastrami, chewing until she was full, then jumped nimbly up onto the girl's shoulder and draped herself around the girl's neck contentedly.
Nuzzling into the soft fur, the brunette laughed again and gave the cat one more scratch before going back to making her snack. Even being away from her sister, maybe this place wouldn't be so bad.
