Kurt practices his climbing and ends up startling the new girl instead.
Kurt liked to keep even his obscurer skills up, arguing that you never knew when he might be called on to use them in the field. He'd needed to climb buildings more than once in the past, so he included that among them... and right now, he was scaling the wall of the mansion towards his own open window.
Seated cross legged on her bed, laptop on her lap, Sarah was busy returning an email to her sister when she caught movement outside her window. Her second story window. "What in the world?" the brunette muttered as she unfolded her herself and padded barefoot over to investigate.
Whatever she'd been expecting it hadn't been something blue, furry and with a tail.
The younger mutant gave a little shriek of surprise, and stumbling back from the open pane, tripped over a pair of shoes which put her promptly on her rear.
Everything visible from the window went still for a moment, and after a short pause an apologetic blue face appeared in the open space. "Hello. I am sorry, I did not realize anyone was in."
"W-Who are you?" she stuttered, inching back on her hands and butt across the carpet towards the door. "And how did you get in here?"
"I teach here", he explained, not making any attempt to come further into the room. "My name is Kurt Sefton, and I think you are Sarah, our newest student?"
She nodded dumbly once but remained on the floor as she looked over the form standing in her room. "You're a teacher?" Sarah repeated, not at all sure what to make up this 'Kurt' or his sudden - and very strange - appearance.
"Of dance and gymnastics", he confirmed. "And, very occasionally, powers training. We do not get so many teleporters I am needed for that often."
Dance and gymnastics. Not two things she excelled at but at least the teleportation bit made sense given his entrance. "I'm a techopath," she said then added lamely, "You're blue."
"Yes", he said equably, then stepped forward slightly to offer her a hand up. "I was born this way. You will also note the tail."
Sarah couldn't help but flinch when he extended his hand. Brown eyes traveled from the open palm up to his face and back before, with a hard swallow, she reached back. "Thanks," she replied softly.
"I really did not mean to scare you", he said just as quietly, letting go of her hand as soon as she was back on her feet. "I forget, sometimes."
"It's okay," the student said, brushing herself off. "I just... Well, I haven't met a lot of mutants before. I mean, other mutants who, um... who..." She bit her lower lip as she tried to find the best way to phrase her explanation.
"Who look like mutants", he finished, no accusation in his tone. "It is all right. Many have not, and my differences are greater than most."
"Yeah. Especially when they're climbing up the side of the building," Sarah added with a smile more shy than nervous. "Between you and Nathan with the Doom Chicken my first night here, I think I'm going to have to keep the shades drawn just so there aren't any more surprises."
Your first night?" He winced slightly. "We usually do try to ease newcomers into things a little more than that. He did not crash into the lake again, did he?"
"No, he was flying around it. Does he crash into it often?"
"He claims not, but it has been known in the past", Kurt told her, eyes twinkling.
The younger mutant giggled once, the cornered of her lips tugging upward. "Maybe I'll keep an eye out for that, then."
"It is definitely a sight worth seeing." He smiled back. "So, while I am here, how are you settling in?"
Sarah shrugged and gestured around the sparse bedroom. "Okay, I guess. I think I've seen most, if not all, of the mansion from various tours given to me but I still need to get some stuff to fill this place in. It's kind of empty but there was no way I could bring a lot of my stuff from home."
"If you cannot afford to have it shipped", he suggested, "something could be arranged to help you out. The Professor, for example, could easily lend or give you the money."
"Oh, no. I mean, it's on its way. I just have a lot of stuff and I couldn't bring it with me," the girl explained, smiling softly again. "My parents are shipping most of it. And I have some money to get new stuff if I want it but that means finding a way into the city." And probably someone to go with her.
"Ah, now that we can help with", was the cheerful response. "Many people here have cars and go regularly into the city, or if you prefer there is a bus that leaves from very close by. And my sister in the city sometimes comes by to take a minibus run."
Her face brightened considerably. "Cool! I might have to try the bus sometime. Or the minibus run - though, that's not considered a field trip, is it? I was warned against going on those."
He had to laugh at that. "I see the grapevine is working as well as it ever did. No, I think we can exempt the minibus from field trips, as it is regular."
"Well, that's good," Sarah laughed. "It runs a lot then? Trips in and out of the city? Who all goes?"
"Whenever she gets the chance, though I understand she has asked someone less busy to fill in for her from now. Anyone goes along who wants to, really - the students often take up the chance."
"Awesome. I'll keep my ears open for that, then," came the promise. It sounded like fun - and not the over-exciting kind that the alumni in the journals had warned her about. "Thank you for letting me know about it."
"You are very welcome", he said sincerely, then glanced back at the window. "I will stop intruding on you now and continue on my way, I think. It was nice to meet you."
"It was nice meeting you, too. Sorry that I kind of freaked out though," she added with a sheepish smile.
"Ah, it happens", Kurt said easily, grinning at her. "And you did not try to attack me, so there is nothing at all to forgive."
