The furry purple guard goes back on duty at Yvette's bedside after surgery and Yvette stocks up on cuddles.
The purple cat was doing her guardian gargoyle imitation once again, sitting on Yvette's nightstand with her tail wrapped around her feet and watching her sleeping friend. Occasionally, she would get distracted by a sound or movement coming from elsewhere and her head would whip around, and the flashing lights and screens with needles on them that jumped and the blips and beeps were fascinating to her, but her ears were pricked back to listen specifically for sounds of Yvette stirring.
There was a yawn and a soft sigh and then Yvette's eyes opened. She was still pale, but not as deathly looking as she had been before the surgery, and her smile was much stronger even a day after. "Hello, Catseye," she said softly, rubbing her eyes and trying to push herself upright. "Have you been there long?"
Startled out of her concentration on the flashing monitor lights at the sound of Yvette's voice, Catseye gave a start that had her falling off the nightstand with a thud. Apparently her senses weren't as honed towards Yvette's waking up as she'd hoped. She jumped back up onto the nightstand and looked around intensely, wondering if anyone had seen her and more importantly, if anyone would dare to laugh.
Yvette's lips twitched, but she knew better than to laugh. "I am sorry," she said gravely. "I did not mean to startle you." She stretched out a hand to scritch between Catseye's ears in apology.
Catseye climbed onto Yvette's bed, tail lashing in appreciation for Yvette not laughing at her. She gave a nod of thanks for the apology and butted Yvette's side with her head, and let Yvette skritch her head for a while, purring like the motor of Scott's car before finally shifting into girlform. "How is Yvette feeling?" she asked, legs dangling over the side of the bed but torso turned so she could face her friend.
"Much better," she replied, smile growing wider. "It is good, to be able to sit up again." She shifted a little. "Even if the stitches are not so comfortable."
"Stitches sound icky, but Catseye thinks they are a good thing if they make Yvette better. When the stitches and the machines make Yvette better, then Yvette can go home!” Catseye grinned. She had to quash her curiosity and fight the urge to poke at Yvette’s side where she knew the stitches were. Instead, she tapped at one of the machines with a clawed finger. "Catseye wants to play in the woods with Yvette again! And go driving!"
"They say I can be going home soon, if I am being careful for the first while," Yvette replied, happily. "Dr. Grey-Summers is talking to the doctors to be arranging it. I will have to be wearing the inhibitor until I am healing." She didn't sound in the least bit regretful about that.
Catseye shifted closer to Yvette, wrapping her arms around her friend's shoulders. "Catseye likes the inhibitor because it means Catseye can nap and snuggle with Yvette! But Catseye thinks that sharp skin is part of what makes Yvette Yvette so maybe it is a goodthing that Yvette's powers are not gone for good?" She didn't sound entirely convinced- this whole new 'everything about a person makes them special' thing was still new and a little confusing to her.
“Forge is saying I cannot be wearing it always, or it will be making me sick, so I suppose I will have to be accepting that they will be coming back one day.” Yvette half-turned – carefully – and buried her face in Catseye’s neck. “I will miss being able to be doing this,” she continued, muffled. “You do not realize that you are missing something until you can be having it again.”
Holding on to Yvette happily, Catseye tried to ponder over the issue of her wearing the inhibitor. "Maybe Yvette can be wearing it sometimes?" she asked hopefully, nuzzling Yvette's neck, "like how sometimes Catseye wears her collar but sometimes she doesn't? Maybe for special times? Catseye likes hugging Yvette and Catseye doesn't want her to be missing hugs!"
“Perhaps.” Yvette didn’t think so, however. She knew Forge was deeply opposed to the use of the devices and she knew Emma would not approve of such short cuts to her learning control. “In the meantime, I can be, how you say? Stocking up, yes?” And to punctuate her words, she snuggled closer.
Giggling, Catseye swung her legs up onto the bed and made herself more comfortable. “Catseye thinks this is a veryveryvery good idea. And Catseye thinks Yvette is smart and brave not to be sad about her powers. Smart brave cats and humans are proud about what they do have and not sad about what they do not have. And only SillyKittens are upset about things that they cannot fix. Catseye yelled at SquirrelGirl for getting upset about thinking she hurt Yvette,” she informed her friend, wrinkling her nose.
“Dori? Oh, I hope you were not yelling at her too much. She was being very upset and some people, when they are upset, think that they are doing something wrong.” Yvette shifted to look up at Catseye. “I did tell her it was not her fault. It was the accident.”
"She was being a SillyKitten," Catseye replied. "It is silly to think SquirrelGirl did something wrong when she didn't. Catseye told her it was not her fault too. And then Catseye made her run away." She lay down on Yvette's pillow and tugged gently on Yvette's arm to encourage her to lay down too, to use Catseye's shoulder as a pillow.
“Run away?” Yvette’s brow furrowed and she resisted as best she was able the hint to lie down. “Is she being all right? I do not like to think of people being sad and scared because of what is happening to me. We need to be looking after each other now.”
The catgirl sat back up, frowning. "Catseye thinks she was scared because she is a squirrel the same way Catseye is a cat, and when she was scared she was like a squirrel because Catseye was mad and was like a cat and squirrels are afraid of cats when they are not thinking smart. But Catseye thinks she will be better when she knows that it was not her fault that Yvette got hurt. Catseye was trying to look after her! Catseye told her and told her and told her it was not her fault and not to be sad! And then she ran away!" How come Yvette didn't want to snuggle with her?
“Were you meaning to make her frightened? Or was it just because she is the squirrel sometimes and you are the cat?” Yvette asked, still worried about Dori. The younger girl had enough to worry about without being frightened of her classmates, especially now.
"Catseye did not mean to make her frightened, nonono!" The purple head shook vigourously. "It is because SquirrelGirl and Catseye are both ferals, Catseye thinks, but SquirrelGirl's mutation is to be a squirrel and that means her mutation makes her sometimes afraid of cats. Catseye did not mean to make her afraid, only to stop blaming herself for Yvette being hurt. Catseye would never make her friends frightened, and SquirrelGirl is Catseye's friend just like Yvette is Catseye's friend." She nudged Yvette's cheek with her nose affectionately, hoping Yvette would let the Dori issue go and concentrate more on the snuggling.
"Perhaps later, you should let her know that. When people are upset, they do not always think so clearly." Yvette relaxed a little and laid down again, pillowing her head on Catseye's shoulder. "It will be good for all of us to go home," she continued. "People are needing their safe place again. For things to be normal, yes?"
The catgirl frowned. Being human was confusing. "Catseye thinks she should already know but Catseye will tell her just to make sure," she agreed, settling back more comfortably and petting Yvette's hair. "Yes, home is good. Catseye misses the woods and driving and Elpis and barnmice and Mister Beaubier and Kyle and otherfriends. Catseye thinks notnormal is okay for right now though since notnormal means Catseye can nap with Yvette. Can Catseye nap with Yvette?"
“People are silly sometimes. It is always good to make sure,” Yvette said with a sleepy smile – the hair petting was soothing. “And yes, you can nap with me. I think there will be lots of naps for a while, until I am better, and it is nice to have someone to nap with.”
The catgirl smirked. "Well, Catseye can ask everyone to come and nap with Yvette for when Catseye's turn is over. Maybe Kevin?" she teased playfully.
Yvette blushed scarlet and hid her face in the pillow.
