log: cammie and amara
Jun. 15th, 2009 04:17 pmbackdate to earlier in the week. Amara and Cammie meet in the library to discuss her taking the GED.
So, Amara may have gotten ridiculous organised about meeting up with Cammie about helping her with her GED. She'd pulled out all her old notes and practice tests, as well as printing out some information from the internet about both taking the test and what sort of things she could expect to need to know. It had taken two years for Amara to get caught up enough to sit for the test, but she was pretty sure that would not be the case for Cammie. Whatever the case may be, Amara was definitely willing to help Cammie out as much as she could so the other girl could get her GED. She had everything spread out in neat piles at the library table she'd commandeered for this purpose, and now all she needed was for Cammie to join her.
“Um, wow,” Cammie said as she made it to the library, spotting Amara under a small mountain of materials. She didn’t really know all that much about what she needed to pass the test other than show up and likely take a number two pencil so it was sort of an interesting development to see such a huge pile of stuff in front of the blonde, “Is this the right table, because I think you got out a bit more than we might need.”
Amara bit her lip, looking a little sheepish. "... well I wasn't sure how much you wanted to get done today, so I brought everything I could think of. All my notes from when I was studying, as well as some information I found about taking the test and what you can expect for it. I wasn't sure how much you'd need to catch up, I was pretty behind when I first got here, but then I'd never been to an American school at that point." And... she was rambling.
“Well, I guess we’ll see what works and what doesn’t,” Cammie said sitting down slowly and eying everything, “I got through my Freshman year before I bolted so who knows, right?”
"That's one more year of high school than I ever did." But then the situations weren't really comparable. "If you like, to start off with, we can go through a practice test, just to see where you're at and what we need to focus on? I've never really tutored someone before or anything like that, and so I'm not really sure where to start."
“Sure, toss me the practice test. One of us will kick the ass of the other, I’m just not sure which way it will be, you know?” she said, pulling a cheap flask out of her pocket. The contents were antifreeze, not alcohol, not that either had any overt affect on her. But this got less looks than putting it in a water bottle.
"Well, just keep in mind that it doesn't matter how you do on this - it's just a way for us to figure out what you need to work on." She rifled through one of the piles of paper she had on the table, handing over the pages. "You don't need to worry about trying to do it within the prescribed time as well, we'll worry about that later." She glanced at the flask and looked worried for a split second, before pulling her eyes away in a hurry.
“It’s antifreeze,” Cammie said, answering the unspoken question, “I can’t get drunk anyway. And people tend to stare when they realize you’re drinking poisonous chemicals. This way’s just a bit easier than a water bottle,” she said, taking a quick glance through the pages, “I guess we’ll get to see how much nine years of school stuck.”
Amara visibly relaxed when Cammie explained about the contents of the flask, flashing a smile to the girl. "I think you'll remember more than you think! And you've probably picked up some things since you've left, you never know."
“Well, I did learn how to pull the stereo out of a car in under thirty seconds without setting off car alarms,” Cammie said with a laugh. “But I doubt that’s on the test.”
Amara laughed at that as well. "Well maybe not that. But being able work quickly under pressure definitely is a good skill to have. And it will definitely help when it comes time to take the test."
“Yeah, I guess so,” Cammie said, “So, is this thing timed, then?”
"Yep. There's five tests, and how much time you get depends on which section you're doing. I took mine over two days, and I'm fairly sure they won't have changed the structure over the past year."
“So…you can’t just take it all at once just to get it over with? Like pulling off a bandaid or something?” Cammie asked. The idea of having tests spread out over two days seemed like torture. Which sounded just like school, so maybe it was spot on.
"... oh, I don't know. I guess you could, but it takes about seven hours or something to take the whole thing, so it is best to split it up. It's over consecutive days, so it's not like a regular exam period which runs over a week or two. I guess we could find out if they run it over one day."
“I’d really rather take it on one day,” Cammie said, “That way you’re stressing out over it less.”
"Well, I'll see what I can find out for you. The testing's done through the New York Education Department, so it's all up to them." Amara smiled. "But you won't have to worry about it for the moment, we'll just see how you go with the practice test first."
“Yeah, watch me fail in an impressive ball of failing fire,” Cammie said lightly, starting the practice tests, “Start the timer now, then.”
