Worried for their friend, Dori and Fred wait for him to wake up in the medlab. When he finally does, Julian discovers that...something isn't right....
((OOC: Backdated to Monday, a little after 2am))
The medlab was dim and chilly, midnight having past hours before. Julian Keller, fallen scion and friend, lay still on the sterile bed while machines monitored his vital systems. Gentle, but reassuring, beeps cut the still air as Doreen Green and Fred Dukes quietly watched his chest rise and fall from nearby chairs. It has been just over twelve hours since he'd been put into the bed and been diagnosed as comatose- now all that could be done was to wait.
Doreen wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. She had stopped crying awhile ago, because like with most things in life it wouldn't really do much to change anything. That, and she had already decided Julian was going to wake up and she was going to be here and awake when he did so she had to not fall asleep. It was getting so hard.
"Ugh... what time is it...?"
Fred, after guzzling his latest RedBull, looks at his wrist watch, then back to Doreen, "You don't wanna know." Fred sighed and patted the small girl on the shoulder, "Why don't you close your eyes for a spell? I'll wake you up if anything changes, I promise."
Doreen shook her head, "No. If I go to sleep now I won't be able to wake up. I can stay awake. I just need more Mountain Dew or something."
"Well I'm not giving you another RedBull. Last time you had a sip your tail twitched for like an hour," and he smiled at the memory, but the smile quickly died when he looked back at Jules. As much as he'd been trying to (and failing to) comfort Callie, he was still just as scared for his roommate. But he'd become a huge proponent of the medical care one could get at the Mansion, and felt he knew in his heart Julian would be just fine.
Least ways, he hoped...
"I know... I can stay awake," she said. When she put her mind to something. Really, really put her mind to something, she could do it. "He's going to wake up any minute now. I know it. And he doesn't let me down, so I'm totally sure."
Fred's brow furrowed, then he grinned behind Doreen's head. The girl had gumption; had to give her that. Fred extricated a large Snickers from his pocket and handed it to Dori over her shoulder; he'd noticed she'd stopped eating a while ago unless cajoled to do so, and knew her weakness when it came to nuts...
"I'm not hungry," she said, though it was a lie. Doreen was hungry, but she was so worried she didn't think the food would sit right in her stomach. And Monkey Joe was asleep, so he wouldn't be eating either. Though he was comforting her just by being curled up in her lap. "Maybe later though."
Fred placed the candy next to Dori, in case she changed her mind, and sat down in the chair next to Julian's bed. Yvette, Mister JP, Jules...Fred appreciated every moment he'd had at Xavier's. He appreciated having, well...a family. But what kinda life was this? People getting hurt left and right...when would it be his turn in one of these beds? When would it be Callie's?
Fred lost himself in thought for the moment, his eyes open and far off...
A sudden beep from one of the machines caused a stir in the still air. It was followed by another beep and another, in increasingly fast intervals. Julian's face twitched slightly and his eyes fluttered open.
There was a bright light above him, blinding him and forcing his eyes shut again. His throat was parched and he couldn't quite speak, though his lips moved. The last thing he'd remembered were the flowers and Callie after the museum...this was wrong.
Doreen saw that and was suddenly right next to Julian, hugging him even though he was still laying down, "You're awake! I knew you'd wake up! I just knew it!"
There was something fuzzy hugging him tightly...was he dead? There was something familiar about the smell of the person squeezing him. 'What is going on?' he thought through a haze. Every muscle ached. Slowly, he squeaked out, "Where...am...I?"
Fred was behind Dori, smiling broadly but sure to stay back; Jules probably needed a moment to reacclimate and while the tiny squirrel girl smothering him probably wasn't the best, it's not as if he could be stopped. He listened as Julian groaned out his question, and managed a chuckle, despite the situation, "You're in MedBay, Scruffy. You, uh...there was a bit of an accident..."
"Callie did something, but she didn't mean to so you shouldn't be mad at her. No one is really sure quite what's going on yet," Doreen said, Monkey Joe was on the floor now and awake, looking around groggily before finding the candy bar Fred had offered Doreen and dragging it to the corner of the room it was his.
Doreen didn't stop hugging Julian.
"You've been out all day!"
An accident? That didn't make sense. "What...?" The pressure and warmth was making it harder to think. "Water?" he gasped.
Fred had anticipated that request, and was already pouring a glass from a pitcher kept nearby that he'd filled with ice at some point. He made sure to place the glass securely in Julian's hand. "It's okay man. The doc's have just been keeping an eye on you mostly."
Doreen backed off a little bit so Julian could drink, "Are you feeling okay? Do you want us to get Dr. Grey-Summers? Or anyone else? I can go get some food if you want..."
Julian took a sip of the water and started to cough. It was another moment before he could continue, but the cold water felt good spreading through his body. Once the glass was drained it was easier to talk and he felt a bit more invigorated. "There was an accident with Callie? Is she okay?"
"Callie's okay," Doreen promised, "She's really upset, you know? She doesn't know what's happened either."
His eyes were starting to adjust to the bright light, though their humming was problematic. There was a slight crackle behind them too, like electricity sparking on a taser. "Oh, okay...I should go talk to her." He tried to move but his strength was still gone. "God I feel so weak." There was a weird tingle in his sides.
Fred placed a hand on Julian's shoulder gently, "Whoah there man. You..." he grinned, " You need to stay off your feet for a bit, man. You just woke up. Weak's gonna happen, yea? Do you want me to go get the Doc for ya?"
"Yeah, Fred can go get the doctor and I can stay here or we can do it the other way around. Are you feeling okay I mean other than feeling weak? You'll be okay, I'm sure of it," Doreen said, nodding firmly.
The machines suddenly stopped beeping causing all three of them to look at the monitor which had now gone dark. "That can't be goo-" Julian's thought was cut short as electricity started to arc between the electrodes attached to his skin. Several of the jolts hit Fred's hand, though the big man seemed unimpacted by the surge. "What the hell?!"
Fred reacted as quick as he could, putting himself between Dori and Jules just in case any sparks jumped in her direction, "Dori! Get the Doctor! Now!!!"
“O…okay!” Doreen said, and turned and scurried out, calling for the doctor at the top of her lungs.
