Set late Tuesday night, long after this conversation but before this post .
Amanda discovers the hard way about Cain's new accessory.
Angelo was avoiding his nightmares, and had therefore gone for a late-night walk around the public areas of the mansion. Noticing a draught in the region of the back door, he went to investigate, and was surprised to find it standing wide open... with Amanda sitting huddled in the gap? Angelo approached her carefully, not wanting to startle her. "Amanda?" he said softly. "You okay?"
She didn't appear to hear him - this close, he could see the whiteness of her face, the dark circles under red-rimmed eyes. The whimpering resolved itself into words: "...it's gone, it's gone and I can't... I don't know what t' do... I'm so empty..."
Angelo moved closer, worried, and dropped into a crouch at her side. "...Amanda? What you doin' here? It's freezin'..."
She started, his voice and proximity getting through to her. "Ange?" she asked. "Yer here? Really here?"
"I'm really here", he assured her. "What's goin' on?"
"I can't feel it any more, Ange. It's gone. I was just goin' t'... just a little bit, everything's so horrible right now an' I thought just a little bit t' make me feel better... Only it's gone, I can't feel nothing, not at all." She began shaking again, so violently her teeth chattered.
Angelo moved forward, wrapped his arms firmly around her and pulled her out of the doorway enough to close it. "I don't understand. What's gone?" He looked at her hard, starting to get what he was seeing. "Amanda... have you been takin' somethin'?"
She laughed despite herself, a high, almost hysterical giggle. "You could say that." The laugh cut off. "The power. My source. All that wonderful energy, gone."
Angelo looked confused, still holding on to her since he was afraid she might fall if he let her go. "The... power? The magic, you mean?"
"My mutant power is t' absorb mystic energy, right?" she said between shivers. It was hard to talk coherently with the pounding in her head and the huge empty hole inside her where the power should be. "I found a power source, a big one. It... it was almost too much," she admitted reluctantly. "But that doesn't matter now, 'cause it's gone and there's nothin' else for me, not a scrap."
Angelo was still supporting her, worried by her shaking. "You want me to go get someone?"
"No!" Panicked, she tried to push away from him, but was too weak. "No, you can't, please Ange, they'll send me away, Pete will make me go..."
Angelo pulled her back, murmuring soothingly. "Okay, okay, I won't tell anybody. Just tell me what to do."
"I want... I need somethin' mystical. Somethin' t' tide me over, just for tonight. Just t' get me head clear." She rubbed her forehead with a half-clenched hand. "There's got t' be somethin' here... There's some stuff, in me room, but Paige can't know, she thinks I'm horrible already, everyone does, only it's so hard t' think when I'm charged..." She began tugging at her hair, hard.
Angelo grabbed her hand and pulled it down forcefully. "Stop that. Paige does not think you're horrible, I'd lay money on it." He sighed. "Look... if you won't let me take you to the medlab, the best I can do is take you back to your room. How do you think it'd look if I went to get your stuff an' Paige was there? You don't think she'd wonder?"
"I just don't care any more, there's no point, it' sall gone wrong. 'M rubbish, me. So it doesn't matter if Paige sees me." She began to cry, softly, hopelessly.
Angelo pulled her round and into his arms, rubbing ! he! r back. "Hey, hey... I know about the potion, but you are not rubbish. An' yeah, people are angry, but not everybody. Sarah and Shinobi still wanna know you, just to name two."
She buried her face in his shirt, shoulders shaking, choking out incoherent noises. Angelo held her close, murmuring soothingly and unintelligibly, before asking, "Where d'you wanna go, then? Can't stay here, you'll freeze."
Her shaking was enough response to that. "Me room, I 'spose," she managed at last, her voice thick with tears. "There's stuff I need in there. Just have t' brave the Insomnia Queen."
Angelo nodded. "Come on, then." He let go of her carefully, ready to catch her if she showed signs of falling. She managed to keep her feet, but clutched at Angelo's arm to steady herself. And to comfort herself, if truth be told. Walking as slowly as an old lady, she let him lead her back to her room.
