Dori runs through the woods, trying to get Monkey Joe in shape, and finds that she is not alone.

Doreen loved the woods. There were parks in LA, but never anything sizeable you could really run through. Monkey Joe was right behind her and that was good, he needed the exercise. The smell of sap, the leaves changing colors the bite the air was getting all pointed to fall.

If Vic and Johnny hadn’t left she might have associated her growing lack of energy with the changing of the seasons.

She wasn’t paying attention to where she was going as she ran and leapt from branch to branch. But she had to touch down eventually. Classes would start soon and when they were as small as they were here, people tended to notice when you weren’t there. Dori took a flying leap from branch to ground.

Lex watched the feral spring from the tree to the ground as he sat picking the grime out of his fingernails. He was fully aware of how creepy it'd be if she turned around at that moment so he decided to slide the knife away before she noticed him. Even as he did so he felt something skitter above him. He looked up and a small squirrel stared back.

"Oh, hello there," he called, expecting the critter to run away. When it didn't he looked at the girl. He wondered if she was one of those telepaths but could only speak to animals. He'd find out soon enough.

Doreen looked over and smiled slightly when she saw one of the new teachers (self defense, she knew) standing under Monkey Joe. “Hi!” she said, jumping over in a single leap and looking up at Monkey Joe, “You have to keep up,” she said in English, “You’re never going to lose that weight like this.”

"Oh, so he was following you. He doesn't seem to be too good at it." Lex smiled, reaching out a hand to the little ball of fur. If the thing wanted to see who he was then Lex would let him. "I'm Lex, by the way."

"He's just out of shape," Doreen said, as Monkey Joe took the offer to use Lex's head as a stepping stone, "Nice to meet you, Mr. Lex. I'm Doreen. This is Monkey Joe," she said, as the squirrel worked his way on to her shoulder.

Feeling the squirrel bounce off him, Lex wondered how a wild creature could be out of shape. It was larger than most he'd ever seen, but he didn't know enough about small game to know what was unnatural. "Pleasure to meet you." He said, and then remembered his duties as a teacher. "Aren't you supposed to be in class?"

Doreen started, "Um... not for another few minutes, I'm sure," Doreen said, as Monkey Joe settled in on her shoulder. "I thought. I mean. It's not THAT late, is it?"

"Not quite, but I think you should still head back towards the Mansion. If you aren't adverse, I'd like to walk with you. Maybe ask some questions about what you'd like to get out of the self-defense course." Lex was starting to warm up to the idea of being a teacher, he liked being able to influence the kids in a positive way. It sure beat the hell out of shooting at them, even if they charged forward strapped with explosives.

"Um, okay," it sort of shot her plans to keep running around to the last possible minute out of the sky, but she really shouldn't be late. Or make a habit of it. She started pulling twigs out of her hair, "You can ask questions."

Lex thought about it for a moment, for all he'd grown to understand the other mutants of the mansion, he still didn't know if there were politically correct ways of addressing their mutations. He looked down at the girl, and thought about warning her. No, he thought, that'll just make everything more awkward. "So, what do you expect from the self-defense course, both as a feral mutant and as a student?" He thought that was a good diplomatic start.

"I dunno. I just don't want to hurt people. But I suppose if I'm going to be a superhero I should learn how to punch something," Doreen mused, trying not to laugh as Monkey Joe tickled her trying to get comfortable.

"Hmm..." Lex paused, trying to think through his next words very carefully. He was not supposed to be teaching the children to be 'superheroes' even if that's what he felt they were naturally inclined to think of themselves. "Well, I don't know about the whole superhero bit, as I've been told it goes against the mansion's policies, but we can definitely work on teaching you to defend yourself without hurting people. Have you ever heard of 'free running?"

"How can it be against policy when all the teachers are totally Super Heroes?" Doreen asked, "And maybe, kinda. I mean, I think I've seen stuff on YouTube."

"That may be, but we are not allowed to train you to follow in our footsteps. We are supposed to get you ready to follow any path you choose," he hoped that talking to her like this wouldn't jeopardize his new position, but he wasn't going to lie to her to make it easier. "And free running, in its most basic definition, is the art of using the environment to provide the path of least resistance."

"Oh, so what I do with the trees. And I already know what I want so it wouldn't be breaking the rules at all," Doreen pointed out brightly.

"Well, that makes it much more of a gray area... I will have to ask the professor about that." He smiled, maybe he could make the advanced coursework for those who were inclined towards joining the X-Men straight away.

"It's not really a gray area. It's what I want to do," Doreen said simply. How could anyone NOT want to be a super hero?

"Fair enough. I'm planning on running some opt-in advanced courses sometime before the end of the semester, if you are serious about what you say you should take them and see how well the shoe fits." Lex replied, he'd still have to make sure it was alright with Xavier. Last thing he needed was to rattle his cage. Literally.

"Really? What type of advanced stuff?" Doreen asked, walking backwards so she could look at him as he talked. (It was only polite, after all.)

"I'm not quite sure, as it is merely a hypothetical at this moment. I have to pass it by Callisto to see what she feels is appropriate, as she did not take too kindly to my original ideas." He ran his hair through his hair as he spoke. It was going to be a little tense trying to figure out what exactly was acceptable.

“Oh, okay,” Doreen said and looked up and leaped into the lower branches of the tree that hung about six feet above her. She liked traveling like this, “Will it be anything like gymnastics? That course is fun.”

"Maybe, think of it as practical application of gymnastics. I'm hoping everyone will be able to walk away with a better understanding of how to be aware of their surroundings, and use them to their advantage." He hoped that made sense. If it didn't he would have a hard time teaching it to the group as a whole.

“Yeah, I get it,” Doreen said, “Wanna race?”

"Sure, but there's one catch..." He took off at a sprint. "Loser has to make lunch." He knew he couldn't keep up with the feral, but Lex thought making her lunch might be a good way to get to know the kid.
