Backdated to Saturday at the amuement park. As everyone buddies up, Dori finds herself odd man out, until Yvette asks her for a favour.

Normally, Doreen would be totally pumped right now. There was excitement underlying a trip to an amusement park. Even if it wasn’t Disney Land. Even though she hadn’t been to Disney Land in years. When you were sixteen, two years were forever. When everyone started pairing off – or getting paired off – it was eerily reminiscent of her old high school.

The smells of people, fried food and the oil on the rides didn’t do anything to help. She wished Vic was there. And Johnny. Her tail drooped. She wished she could’ve brought Monkey Joe, but the park wasn’t really a good place for him. But then she could’ve said she had a partner.

"Would you like to be my buddy?" came Yvette's soft, accented voice at her shoulder. The Albanian girl smiled as Dori turned. "I am new to the amusement parks and I need the, how you say? Native guide?"

Doreen looked over and smiled, "Um, okay. I've never been to this park before but we can get a map and figure it out. And...yeah. Maybe we'll ride one of the roller coasters," she said, slipping very easily into her bright and cheery voice. It wasn't hard. She DID love amusement parks. So that helped a lot. "You've really never been to a park?"

"No. My mother, she did not like them so much and would not let me go when I was younger. Then I was manifesting." Yvette shrugged a little and smiled again at the younger girl. "I am thinking you know the amusement parks well, yes?"

"We used to go all the time. There's Disneyland, which is pretty close to home that we... well, Mom didn't have the money after Dad left, but before then we would go all the time. This park isn't that big so it shouldn't be too hard," Doreen said, finding the obligatory stand with the maps and opening it up, "This should let us know where everything is."

"Do you have the favourite ride?" Yvette asked, looking over the map with Dori and being careful to keep her hair from brushing the other girl's clothes. "I know you have not been to this park before, but they have the similar rides, yes? Perhaps we could be starting there?"

"I like roller coasters. They're really fun," Doreen said, looking the map over and finding the few they had. Roller coasters tended to be scattered all over a park, if only for space reasons, "They have two types. They have wooden roller coasters and metal ones. I like both. Some people say there's actually a difference between the two though."

"I think maybe the metal one?" Yvette suggested. Anything made of wood tended to make her a little uneasy with regards to the potential for accidents with her powers - metal was harder for her to cut through. She indicated the closer coaster, and began heading in that direction with Dori in tow. "So, what is being your favourite part of the roller coaster?" she asked, more to keep Dori distracted - it was obvious that she was taking the departures of Johnny and Vic hard, and everyone's tendency to pair up lately didn't help. "Are you, how you say, the speed demon like Catseye?"

"The drop. It's like when you jump, there's that moment where your stomach just seems to hit the ground and you weigh next to nothing and I've always wondered if that's what flying is like, you know?" Doreen said, picking out one of the roller coasters. You could see one of it's 'hills' from here. Finding the line wouldn't be too hard, "It's fun to go fast, but it's even funner to just have that sensation for a moment."

Personally Yvette didn't think it sounded fun at all, but she wanted Dori to enjoy herself. New experiences wouldn't kill her. "It is sounding like the time Angel was throwing me at the building," she said with a chuckle. "There was very much the not having weight then. At least until I was hitting the roof."

"Oh, we won't be hitting any roofs. They're really, really careful with the roller coasters. They have to be. They check them all the time and... Angel threw you at a building?" Doreen asked. And looked around. Ah! The line was THAT way.

"We needed to be dropping a billboard on someone trying to hurt us and the billboard was on the roof," Yvette explained. "I cannot fly, so Angel was throwing me."

"Wow. That had to be fun," Doreen said in a hushed tone, "The line's right over there," she said, "And it isn't even that bad. I guess the parks here don't stay busy all year round." Disneyland had wait times for rides that went over an hour.

"It was when the Apocalypse man was in New York - did you see that on the television news?" Yvette gave a small shrug. "The New Mutants were stuck in the city, so we had to be taking care of ourselves until we found the X-Men." As they joined the queue, she adjusted the topic - it wouldn't do to talk about the X-Men in the middle of a crowd, especially with the pair of them garnering stares and attention. "So, the rollercoaster is the popular ride, yes?"

"Oh yeah...." Dori muttered, she had caught parts of that on the news. In truth she had been more interested in what was going on at home than anything going on in the outside world. No matter how big it was. "Yeah, it is really popular," Dori ignored the staring, she was really good at that, "They really are some of the best rides ever. I also like those haunted houses and mirror mazes that some parks have."

"Oh, I think I am knowing the mirror maze. That is when the mirrors are all wobbly, yes?" Focussing on chatting made it easier to ignore the staring, and the butterflies in her stomach - the roller coaster was very high and it made an alarming rumbling sound underneath the screams of the passengers. "Oh, I am meaning to ask - what are funnel cakes? Miss Tabitha mentioned them on the journal but no-one really explained."

“Oh, they are so awesome,” Doreen said, “They’re like cakes only not and really sweet and sometimes they can cover them with sugar or stuff them with things. I could live on funnel cakes. And mini-doughnuts! We have to have those too! And lots of pop as long as we’re here. I’ll make sure we get all the best food! …But it is kinda expensive,” Doreen paused. She didn’t have that much so, just the essentials maybe? Yes, that would work, “So maybe we’ll just stick to the cakes and doughnuts. Oh, and cotton candy. Cotton candy isn’t expensive.

“Perhaps you would let me be making the treat for you? To be thanking you for letting me, how you say, tag along?” Yvette suggested innocently. Sometimes cashing in on your ‘sweet and innocent’ persona was good for other people – she knew how concerned Dori tended to be about money. “Mr. Dayspring, he is paying me for the translation work and I do not have much to be spending it on. After all, my clothes have to be special made.” A grin suddenly appeared. “And I am liking the sugar, very much.”

“The sugar is awesome,” Doreen said simply, awe almost lacing her tone. She couldn’t imagine a life without sugar and snack foods. “Are you sure? I mean… you did work for that money.”

"It was not such the hard work, just to be reading something in Serbian and making it into English," Yvette replied, smiling. "And you are my friend. I like to be able to do the nice things for my friends, yes?"

“Yeah,” Doreen said and smiled, “I get the last part,” she said and then her eyes widened and she had to bite back a startled yelp. Instead she disengaged her tail easily from the hands of whoever had decided to pull it without even turning around. She wrapped it around front of her like a fuzzy belt, “But just this once. And I’ll have to treat you when I have the chance.”

"It is the deal." Yvette shot the tail-puller a glance, her glowing eyes flaring briefly brighter. "And later, we can be eating so much sugar we are vibrating, yes?"

"That will be so much fun," Doreen said, already bouncing. "I like sugar."
