Doreen gets a phone call she's nervously been waiting for.
Doreen sat at her desk, slowly plowing her way through her homework. She was chewing on a ruler, her phone and her computer not too far away from her, her super hero figures spread out around her. She was still nervous about whether or not she’d get the job. Whether or not they’d actually hire a girl with a tail.
She chewed on her ruler and stared at her math homework.
The phone rang twice before anyone she answered with a casual, "Hello."
Stan ran his thumb and index finger over the bushy white mustache above his lip taking a moment to think before saying anything, "Hello, is Doreen Green there?"
“Speaking!” she said, perking up instantly. Even if it wasn’t the job, she did love to talk to people, “How’re you?”
"I, um..." he hadn't expected the question. "I'm fine, thank you. Dori, this is Stan from the comic store in town." He paused, clearing his throat, "I'm calling about the job. I-"
“Oh my gosh, did I get the job? I hope I got the job. I mean, if not I totally understand,” it wasn’t like this would be the first upset in her life due to her tail, “but I really hope I did.”
"Well, Dori, the short answer to your question is yes. If you'd like to come and join the Uncle Stan's family, we'll have you. You seem to know your stuff, kiddo, but I want to see how you work in high stress situations." On the other end of the phone a glower settled over the room, "What are you doing this Friday?"
“Nothing! I mean, stuff, but nothing all that important. There aren’t any classes on Friday because of Thanksgiving,” she said happily, “I got the job!? I totally am so very thankful right now! And happy! Oooh, this is so awesome!”
"I'm glad I could make your day, kiddo," Stan found her enthusiasm infectious. "Black Friday is one of our busiest days of the year though, so come prepared."
“Oh, I know. Mom used to take me out shopping that day. It’s always so busy! I’ll be ready, I promise promise,” Doreen said, bouncing up and down at her desk.
"Alright, kiddo," Stan chuckled. "Congratulations and Excelsior!"
“Thank you, thank you, thank you! I will do a great job Friday. I promise!” Doreen said.
Doreen does her happy dance right to the Rec Room where Megan is playing pinball.
Once again, Megan found herself in the rec room pumping quarters into the Pirates of the Caribbean pinball machine. It was a good place to avoid studying, and usually a good place to run into people too. She and Nico were both going crazy trying to study for finals in a few short weeks, and she told herself that Nico needed the peace and quiet of their room.
It seemed almost dark outside already at 4 PM, but the game machine was all lights and flashing colors as the silver ball raced around the Pirates themed display. "C'mon, Krakken! I'll get you this time!"
Doreen went dancing into the rec room, Monkey Joe behind her. “I got a job!” she sang happily, her tail all fluffed behind her, “I got a job~! Yes, yes, yes, yes!!”
Megan turned as Dori approached and the last ball sank into the gutter.
"You got a job? Congratulations! Where?"
“The comic shop in town!” Doreen said happily, “I’ve always wanted to work in a comic shop. Well no, I’ve always wanted to write comics, but working in a comic shop is also so very, very awesome.”
"That's great! I bet you'll get a good discount?"
“I don’t know,” Doreen said, “But I hope so! I really don’t care if I do or not because I’ll be working in a comic store!” she said with a happy squeak."
Megan grinned. It was fun to see the squirrel girl so excited, especially after her long stay in the Med Center.
"You know, I don't think I've ever been into a comic store." She thought about it. "Well, once. There were these cool dragons in the window made by McFarlane and I really wanted one."
“Yeah, those are totally awesome!” Doreen said, “I think this store still has a few. They have a lot of other statues too.”
"Well, maybe I should visit you at work sometime and check out the store. What days do you work?"
“That would be cool! I haven’t gotten my schedule yet, but I will so let you know when I do,” Doreen said happily.
"Great! I don't know about you, but I'm ready for winter break. Though I guess you'll be working during the holiday?"
“I guess so. But I’m sure I’ll get Christmas off,” Doreen mused.
"Doing anything special for the holiday? I wonder if there will be a holiday party for the students who are staying here?"
“Not for Thanksgiving, but I’m going home for Christmas. I can see if you can come to my place too if you want,” Doreen offered, “And I’m sure they do stuff here so it should be fun either way.”
"Cool. I have no idea what I'm doing. Last year for Christmas we were invited to my great-aunt's. But of course she didn't know Molly was gone and I didn't want her to find out, so I had to come up with some lame excuse. Not that I really wanted to spend Christmas with my great-aunt and her 9 championship poodles."
“Well, when you find out let me know,” Doreen said brightly.
"OK, great! Thanks for inviting me," Megan said warmly. It felt really good to have friends that cared.
